Ice … Ice … Maybe?

What if you could slide on ice?

Back in the day there were two ‘Ultima Underworld’ computer games that were precursors to Elder Scrolls Arena. But they had slipper ice, and I’ve never come across it in a computer game since. And the first time you encountered it took you by surprise, as you floundered to stop sliding. it also took time to learn how to master your slides, and move on the ice.

So imagine fighting on ice?

Or seeing those Loons who rush through Delves suddenly sliding uncontrollably to smack into a wall or better yet a monster.

If it could be done on a game which came on 3 ½ inch floppy disks and ran on a 483 computer with diddlysquat processing power or memory it must be achievable.

You could even create a passive skill to allow you to control slides or skate.

So .. Ice … Ice … Maybe …

Well, we can already slide off roofs that are meant to be inaccessible, but considering how that works, the game currently only has 100% friction and 0% friction with maybe something close to 100% for horses. Usually your character halts immediately if you let go of W. It would certainly be a new variable that needs to be kept track of and in Cyrodiil this would be a disaster as there is actually quite a bit of ice up in the north. It would definitely be a performance hog. I am sure Ultima Underworld didn't have to deal with the amount of players that ESO needs to deal with today.

It would be cool, but it's too much effort for close to no gain for ZOS. It's the most likely we might see this as a mechanic in an upcoming dungeon or trial but not in the regular overworld I'm afraid. It's just not something that would be high priority on their to-do list
This Bosmer was tortured to death. There is nothing left to be done.

Guild Wars, the original one, had a similar mechanic. When on ice, you'd either slide a bit when trying to stop, or start slow because of low friction when trying to move again. It wasn't a game changer, but it was a nice touch.

Now, the game came out in 2005, so obviously 10 years later such technological feat would have been impossible :P

I think you can slide on ice in Spellbreak. It's in beta now.

The game already slows down for me in towns with multi player hanging out – why do they do that, hang I mean, not doing anything? – so maybe you restrict it to a Delve where you encounter 3 or 4 player at the most.

Although multiplayers skating in synch would be cool, excuse the pun, and cue Bolero … Torvil & Dean anyone?

Npcs at dolmens have an ice ring that goes with their Silence ultimate. It slows players. Do you want us to have a skill like that? It will be time stop all over again I think.
