Can someone explain why my game is tracing from NZ to HongKong to NA then to Europe then back to NA?

I have done multiple traceroutes using CMD and a small Exe program I found, and each and every time I am getting the same results. So I started asking around, both here in NZ and people from Australia, and they are all confirming this is happening. Our pings have gone sky high, recently. Would love some insight please.

I can't give you an explanation, but just chiming in that it is happening to me now. I am playing from NZ on the PC-NA server

Noticed it last night on PC-NA. Usually my pings are 230-250ms, now it is around 400ms ... something has gone wonky with the routing.

Time to fire up that VPN I guess.

Thanks for replying... hope this will sort the mystery out. I have checked the IP that seems odd, maybe I am getting something wrong, I am no tech head. Also the actual in game ping is about 50-70 more than a tracert.

I believe there was a discussion about this recently, and the answer is roughly, you can not trust the "country" tab, because it shows the country of the company the IP is registered to, not the actual country the server is located in.

So you can have an IP which belongs to an US company, and that company owns a server in HK, and the HK server will actually show as "united states" in the "country"column.

For example, in the secreenshot in post #5, you see hop 12 is in HK, hop 13 is in US, but both show 298 ms suggesting that the physical devices are next to eachother, rather than half the world apart.

Well everyone in the NZ/Aus area seems to be having the same issues, as the main post in the general forums with 35 pages of comments will attest to. 450+ ping is not uncommon these days, I have been playing for 5 years and it has never been this bad and this unpredictable. I wonder if ZOS would rather lose the Oceanic player base completely in an attempt to reduce server strain for the rest of the world? Something has changed recently and not for the better. But thanks for your replies.

Definitely having the same issue. And doing a tracert isn't helping things because I can't even get to the destination IP as it times out. Again, going through Hong Kong to the US where it hits Akamai issues but after that, it stops and times out after what is the third US hit on your screenshot CelticStones. So something has gone wonky with the servers for ANZ players since the server maintenance on July 29th.

Sometimes, Akamai blocks the trace route packets, making everyhing after that a black hole.
