How I got a unexpected increase in performance

I simply overclocked my RAM clock speed.

For context, I have a i5 4440, 1050ti, 10GB DDR3 1333hz RAM (Now OC to 1836hz).

When your RAM clock speed is too slow, it will actually bottleneck your CPU since it won't receive data fast enough to make use of your CPU true potential. This is why in my case at least, my CPU and neither my GPU got to 100% usage when playing ESO. It usually sat between 40-60% usage. But after OCing, both increased in usage, and they reach 80-90%, sometimes 100%.

This granted me a boost of around 5-10 fps in all zones, very noticeable in cyrodil, bgs and trials (mainly cloudrest for me). If you have old DDR3 RAM like me, I think it's fair to give it a try, just don't mess with voltage, only increase the clock speed, and do it incrementally.

If you have a modern DDR4 RAM (2600hz+) you will probably not get any benefit from OCing or at least not as noticeable like in my case but it's worth a try. This game relies heavily on CPU, and OCing your RAM can reflect on your CPU performance.

Sounds nice. Keep in mind that OC can potentially damage your system or wear it down sooner, because the stuff isnt made for it. Simply upgrading your total ram (16gb instead of 10gb) is often a better choice.

It usually only damages if you let the temps go wild, usually it's fine if you're familiar with OC. Keep in mind that the issue here is not the size of RAM, but the clockspeed. You can't OC your memory size.

Makes me wish I could upgrade the hardware in my Playstation and overclock that.

You won’t damage your ram unless you go crazy, with an com profile it usually performs well. Worst case you look up a guide and have to adjust the timings yourself to stave off instability.
