What is the goal of these free crates?

If the intended goal is to entice people to spend money on the regular crates, I'd say it's a spectacular failure since it looks like just about everyone got nothing but worthless consumables.

Ouroboros crates are normally obtained by watching other players on Twitch. They only drop consumables by default, for the exception of a single mount and a pet.

They are free, anything you get was free. You know the old “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” saying? Why in the world is anyone complaining?

I don't buy mystery boxes so I've never bought a single crate. I happily spend money in the crown store though but only when I know exactly what I'm getting for my money. Eliminating crates and putting those items in the normal crown store would earn a lot more business from me.

Given the current situation, however, I happily open any free crates and gem anything I can. Then sometimes I buy items in the crate store with my free gems.

They are not a good advertisement for purchasable crown crates, but I don't think the devs ever think fro a new players perspective.

They're just a 'thanks' or small incentive to watch the streams during the drops. It isn't to introduce them to actual crown crates, otherwise they wouldn't hand out so many with such 'bad' rewards (in comparison to crown crates).

Well, they're better than nothing, as at least you can convert all the consumables to gems, to put towards something you like.

But, I agree they're not a great advert for crates, in general.

No, people pointing out that, from a marketing perspective, it's not the best idea to make people think your product is even worse than it is, via a sub-par free sample.

Grown-ups talk about this kind of thing, from time to time...

    How would you know?

It's free incentive to watch a stream nothing more. Ppl need to stop blaming companies for their inability to control the addiction

The only one who would know that it is "Sub-par" would be people who have already purchased crates, which are then not the target demographic of this enticement.

If you already know that the crates exist and what is in them, these obviously are not those.

if you do NOT know that crates exist and these are the first ones you get, when you do buy ones you will be pleasantly surprised at the "quality" of the items inside.

Grownups are running this marketing department, thats for sure.

    No, they're really not.

    It's an utter shambles.

You don't entice people to buy caviar, by handing out gone off cod's roe, do you?

I have no idea what that last sentence is even supposed to mean, but I think its in some reference to niche food items? Crown crates are not cavier, they are a lexus and you 100% entice someone to buy a lexus by giving them a toyota.

Hey, heres a free toyota, but if you give us some money, you get all the things that make the toyota great, plus the luxury of a lexus.

It is really funny that immediately when someone presents an idea that contradicts yours that automatically they are a shill.

Have you ever even studied marketing?

    Let me quote you:

"You don't entice people to buy caviar, by handing out gone off cod's roe, do you?"

    What does that even mean?

The concept of loss leaders must be foreign to you, as yes you do give away lower versions of your product to entice upgrades, thats marketing 101.

You know every gallon of milk sold in the grocery store costs them money right? Why do you think its at the back of the store, so you walk past all the things to buy to get it.

It's the same thing with free crates. Even if you never were going to buy one, you open the free one and you get that dopamine hit and you find yourself saying, weellllll maybe just one.

Whatever though, apparantly I'm a "shill" so enjoy your discussion.

Um, yeah, those crates are in no way like someone giving you $100.

The mount was a nice gift, though.

    Bait people into watching streams.

This. Just like the various bribes to like/follow/etc on Facebook & Twitter over the years, it's an attempt to get more people using Twitch.

(The regular free crates they gave away in-game last year were attempts to get people to buy crates. Personally, I love when games give me free sample lootboxes - they reinforce my lack of desire to ever spend $ on them, by showing how bad they are ;) )

That’s not how loss leader’s work.

They sell good items at a loss to entice people into the store and buy other things. If they sold junk for less no one would come in.
Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
Condemned and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten
