As far as maximising DPS. Dont get to cought up in gear. Knowing a roation and what skills to use is far more important.

Don´t play Elsweyr at first. The zone, I mean. Not only will the story not quite make sense (I am guessing since I assume it takes place after the MQ even if dialogue is adapted to suit people who haven´t played it), but the zone will likely be overcrowded. I didn´t like it when I started playing ESO and couldn´t play solo quests.. well, solo.

Take your time, enjoy the story lines, the lore, questing, the uniqueness of each zone. Try different races, classes and roles. Find some friends to do quests, pledges, trials and pvp. There is lots to do and experience. Enjoy the ride mate. It’s a blast!

Sure, have fun - that's what actually matters.

That said, it's a huge, complex game - any new player should definitely do some research before putting in serious game time.

Time spent getting an understanding of classes and systems in the game could save you a lot of regret.

Don't directly compare yourself to other, higher-leveled players. It will only discourage you. Remember that every Veteran was once getting their asses kicked by some of the weakest mobs when they were brand new, just as you are now.

    - Have fun, dont rush things
    - Enjoy the Quests
    - Dont try to powerlevel, Level doesnt mean much in this game
    - Start researching Right away, even if you think you wont be a crafter
    - Start training your horse ASAP
    - Get all the Guilds right away
    - Finish all the Crafting quests so you can do daily quests
    - Max out your sales and laundering limit in the outlaw refuge every day
    - Dont be afraid to ask stuff in chat, ESo has a really nice community.

On a more serious note I would tell them to try out a variety of classes before settling for one and to play them till at least level 20 before deciding on a main class. I have seen new players get discouraged with a class at level 5....too early to see some of the potential of that class when you dont have many skills open yet.

Immerse yourself in the stories and also try to follow the main story line as it helps you make sense of the world around you.

Feed your mount once you get it at level 10, it will help get you get places faster in your future journeys.

Join a guild that helps beginners. There are many good ones and you will make lots of new friends and get lots of support.
You can always ask for a guild in zone chat.

Mostly, if a newbie asks me for any help i send them a friend request and tell them to ask me for help anytime they need. I usually craft them weapons or gear they need too. Im very protective towards new players. I never forget what it felt like to be one.

@Tasear. Fun question thank you 😊😊😊

The very first thing would be to not get overwhelmed by all the cues popping on their screen, and take their time to read things, and explore the starting area. For old players, levelling a new character is almost an industrial process by now, but I still remember how utterly overwhelmed I was when exiting the tutorial, and seeing the cities for the first time. The second thing would be to read a guide with tips tailored to begginers: things like 3rd person camera, using a mount, starting crafting, allocating attribute points. etc.; there are many such guides around, either written or in video format, by streamers like Alcast, Shimmmer, MissBizz, Tianlein, to name a few, and they are very informative. Finally, to be patient with the game at the start because it can seem vast and complex, but it's absolutely worth it to give it a chance, because they will have many exciting and fun adventures ahead!

Play through the game on your own first, better start in your alliance's starting zones than Elsweyr, so you actually get to know the game (hi)story. It will make for lot more immersion to stay with the game later. Depending on your preference, try to notice which way you do better tanking / healing / dps so you get out more and more of the particular role, what abilities are better than others, how to stack abilities with damage per tick and direct damage abilities for max performance, which enchants are better on weapons / armors. It will help later if you decide to do group content. Remember, you're solo, nobody is pushing you, take the time to experiment.
Also like proposed already above, start to research gear pieces you pick up right away, that way you can replace gear up to your level on your own as you go on, so it stays good enough - any gear about 7 levels lower than your level is getting bad.

And enjoy the game most of all, don't rush it.
Life is a ride, like days in a train, cities rush by, like ghosts in the night.
The rhythm of wheels, time fades away, stations of a journey, destination unknown.
