Some time in the recent past, six months or so, the masses of butterflies around Northpoint seemed to have been reduced.
Anyone have any knowledge of this extremely distressing change?

What happenes in the real world might affect ESO. When they had a mass extinction of deer in de Oostvaardersplassen in the winter of 2004-2005, was also when they disappeared from Cyrodill.

✭Nightblades were nerfed so much that now they can only instakill butterflies from stealth. So they do it en masse to bolster their ego and remember the good old days.
I often see groups of NIghblades stalking butterflies invisible. They kill them with incapacitating strike from stealth. Often that is not enough so they pluck out their wings to finish the job.4 -
