I have noticed a lack of activity on Band App for console players since the summer. Other websites, such as Reddit, gamefaqs are not as active with their ESO related boards.

And what makes me a little nervous was the lack of a collector's edition announcement . That, for whatever reason, makes me think that they just cannot afford to do that, hoping that this xpac can help stabilize them.

Again, I try to be very positive, but the past few weeks, I have been a little more nervous when thinking about this game's future than I did maybe in 2017 or so.

Not trying to argue, just interested in hearing other's opinions.

Well if you search ESO contents on Youtube and compare the like and view number with WOW channels, you'd think ESO is a tiny little game ;)

It is inevitable that MMORPG lose the hype after few years and get into a stablized state, the fact we won all those best MMORPG rewards say nothing to worry about in near future

My opinion is that, barring big improvements by ESO:

The playing public at large hit 'Peak ESO', and is starting to slack off.

It'll surge again when the dragons start to fly, but it remains to be seen whether it'll just be a blip or a surge at that point.
The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

I mean this is what I look to for a sense of hope, right? When you look at "best" or "most played" MMO's on whatever year, ESO is always towards the top.

I've been having the same concerns, but from the perspective of looking at overall new content being added each quarter. When comparing different years' equivalent quarters to each other, a strong pattern of diminishing new content is clearly apparent.

I've posted more in-depth looks into this on other threads, so I'll save everyone the spam of doing so again here. If anyone is curious of more info on it, I've added it to my signature.

@Azyle1 You may be right when it comes to consoles. ZOS probably is not seeing the return to sink that much into the console versions. Reducing the costs to fit the returns is what companies do. It's a good sign that ZOS did not abandon the console line, means they think it's still worth it. To a point.

I played during early access years ago, and I can say that when I and a group of friends started playing, it lasted barely a month. The combat is really bad compared to other games, for me at least. Sluggish and slow, does not feel powerful or smooth. Magicka users only have a Staff, everything else is Stamina. As fans of TES games, we expected more freedom without being punished by avoiding meta builds. Overall, builds seem forced and not exciting, unless you only quest and do not do dungeons. I also do not like the heavily dependent potions and foods, I never liked having to have item buffs to be good, just my preference.

A lot of stars for someone who only played early access.

I think the broader audiences are losing interest in the fantasy/RPG genre now that things like Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft aren't nearly as prevalent. 'The Mob' so to speak, has moved on to other genres, maybe? It would make sense, because we saw a lot of games adopt elements that were mostly exclusive to RPGs until recently; consider when they added leveling up via experience to lots of first person shooters. We also saw the RPG genre gradually move away from turn-based encounters and/or tab targeting to more action oriented playstyles, like we find in ESO and the souls series. Come to think of it, even the last final fantasy game I played was, for the most part, action based gameplay. I can't really recall the last time I saw a significant turn based RPG released outside of disgaea and persona.

If this is the case, this shift in population could be a good thing in the long run as the game will be guided more by opinions from people who want a fantasy rpg, rather than opinions from people who might not realize they just want a different game entirely. But, it could also mean that we're heading down a path of only seeing games like Fortnite2K19 and Call of Duty BlackOps Death Struggle Frumpletart gaining major support.

Normally a lurker, but I thought I'd throw this out there. This one caught me by surprise. Granted, this is just steam revenue (and I just happened upon it because I was curious to look at this since it is rarer because of how secretive Valve is), and having crown purchases kind of makes an apples to oranges compare with the other games, BUT...

    https://store.steampowered.com/sale/winter2018bestof/

ESO is one of the top gross revenue performers on steam. That's pretty crazy for an MMO on the platform, I think. Can we extrapolate that out to the non-steam version and consoles? Not sure, but it at least backs up some of the year-end announcements of how good the player base is made by ZOS. And gives hope that they have the capital to pivot for changes in interest of players, etc.
This, now not that steam is just one of the sale portals for ESO on PC and PC is just one of the three platforms.
In short ESO doing very well economically

I think that they just decided not to do a physical collectors edition this time. Most people probably do the digital downloads these days, and the number of people who want the physical edition is getting smaller. They probably felt that it was time. I would imagine that they end up with extra boxes sitting around stacked against the wall, insulation against the winter cold, because most people don't want them.

Not everything is a portent of doom, and I don't think this is. My feeling is that if they decide it was a bad decision to skip it, they will do it for the next Chapter.

I hesitate to draw sweeping conclusions based on forum activity, especially on general topic sites. My thinking is that if ZOS felt that forum activity was the bellwether of game popularity, they would be out in force chatting things up just to drive people here, and to the game. We all know that is not the case.

I've seen a steady increase in the number of people moving from consoles to PC over the last year.

I'd say this, partly because I'm one of them.

    Let me be blunt.

ESO does not run on consoles anymore. It went downhill after Morrowind.

    Yeah it does?

I sure wish I knew where this participation trophy narrative came from. I hear it so much. I have a 12 year old girl and a 6 year old boy, and through much soccer and hockey and gymnastics, school science fairs and other things, never have I seen a participation trophy given to anyone. When they lost, they lost and tried to do better next time. So kinda curious, and off topic, but was this ever a real thing.

Edit to add on topic: this game is in a fine state. People are playing and buying. I come from swtor, a game that has had barely any content the past couple years. That game is dying. Eso, well eso is amazing compared to that and IMO a damn fine game with a damn fine community to support it.

whatever is going to happen is going to happen and there is nothing we can do about it because we don't control anything about the game.

the sooner you practice radical acceptance, the sooner you won't care what happens and you'll be able to enjoy the game for what it is, as long as we have it. it's a much happier existence.

I wouldn't worry, i'm sure Zeni is working on the next "BIG" game. I really can't wait till technology advances. I think gaming is going to get even better in the future.

Never happen for me. First, I only have satellite - and NO ONE is going to run fiber and real broadband into here before I die (less than 100 full time residents). Second, if new games are VR only, I can't go there even if I had no lag....

Where do you live, Mars? :)

Some technology will be created that will enhance data transfers from satellite to your home.

I am visioning, In the future they will have dual fiber going into our houses and gamers will wear gaming suits for more real life interaction for the virtual world we live in. VR will be an option you switch off and on. It won't be mandatory. :)
