So a 8+ hour maintenance in 2019, are you f'n kidding me? Come on now that''s something you'd expect back in 2004-2008 not 2019. The software maintenance needs to be done before hand then just applied to servers with a 1-2 min server restart. For as far as hardware that takes less then 1 hour to do. Come on Zenimax come back to the current time for video games.

It’s a special patch, some sort of software update for the servers or something. EU is shorter because they did EU last week.

You realize that most servers take about 30-45 minutes just to start right?

What surprised me was that the banner said and still says nothing about a patch. Before this, as long as I can recall, they always made a distinction in the banner between "maintenance" and "patch maintenance", however today is indeed a patch, as they have updated the Patch Notes & Hot Fixes to v4.2.13.....hmmmm

If it is a database operating system update, all the tables are parsed and upgraded which takes some time.

And here we have a nincompoop who doesn't work in IT assuming that IT can click their fingers and solve everything. (source I work in IT and get this crap all the time).

As said here this is longer maintenance due to some of the servers getting OS updates.

will a DB OS upgrade ultimately lead to improvements in performance in game?

Did you see a difference in performance after patch?

Not always, most of the time it's more a security patch of OS or DB. Nevertheless, as @TequilaFire already mentioned, some of these DB updates requires the tables in that DB to be converted/upgraded, which means that the containing data is being re-parsed. This procedure can take a while, depending on how much data (how many rows) the table in question is holding.

I think someone (probably at ZOS) is in the game now, because a few prices on TTC website just updated for PC NA. ZOS is probably making sure some key things work properly before letting us back on.

Database changes are staged in advance so that the only downtime required is at the time of recompile (from old version to new). the servers would have cloned versions of the new DB already in place so the problem isn't the actual update, that takes little time. It could be anything causing the delay. There is a post verification process whereby they spot check the new changes and if problems are found they have to decide if they can fix it w/o restarting the entire process. I've spent many a night doing such updates, everything is calm until compile then the nail biting starts lol

While I can see the perception from many of who work in IT that the OP is naïve and therefore making uninformed observations, the problem also exists in the IT community. Their lack of transparency and communication skills/phenotype with lay persons are to blame for lack of said persons' empathy. I see this everyday in my place of work.

TTC was showing the same sort of updates last week during downtime as well.
TTC was showing the updates every 20-30 minutes for a long while during the downtime, not just towards the end of the downtime.

I have come to suspect TTC shows periodic updates regardless of whether the servers are up or down.
I paid into TTC when I downloaded the software and 'subscribed', so it's not like I'm not a user of the service, but I'm not exactly 'trusting' them anymore, either.

Not really considering we had the same patch you are having two weeks ago + extended maintenance on top of it + tons of server issues. Good luck to you guys though, one can only hope you don't get bummed the same way we did.

Yeah, what does the year have to do with anything? A task can be longer and more complicated than expected/usual, no matter if it's 1752, 2019, or 2475.

Spoken like someone who's never turned a server on in their life.
I manage several and let me tell you, if my server took 45 minutes to turn on, I would go work at a bookstore.
