Opening from stealth damage difference confusion

I was screwing around with my NB and honestly checking some snipes it could pull off and I noticed something when hitting mammoths as a big target. If I buff up, cloak and hit a mammoth from behind with snipe, I get ~35k hit. When I do the same thing with surprise attack, I hit ~47k of damage. Just standing there fighting without cloaking or from stealth, the damage has snipe higher about the same as what I would see in tooltip and I cant figure out why. Thought maybe the fracture from surprise attack is being factored in on initial hit so put mark on a target and then sniped. It only brought it up to ~37k. I look at the passives and it seems the bonuses apply the same and do not specify NB abilities. Maybe its the off balance being applied on the initial hit? Dont think that would make up 10k damage.
