Weapon Passives

A question I have is are weapon passives only active if you have a weapon ability slotted and the correct weapon equipped? I ask because I looked on a YouTube video to get an idea on how to equip my MagDK I just leveled and he said you had to have the ability slotted and the weapon equipped in order to get the passives. It was my understanding that you just had to have the weapon equipped. Am I right in thinking that?

It depends on the Passive. for example. Destruction Staff Passive Ancient Knowledge requires a skill to be slotted to get the passive effect. and you cannot use a skill without the weapon being equipped.

And i believe the reasoning is because Ancient Knowledge affects all skills not just Destro skills (therefore the extra requirement). Where some of the other weapons passives only affect weapon skills.

The passives that matter are the 5% from swords and the 8% for single target from fire staffs and the 8% for AOE from lightning staffs, for the swords you do not need a skill slotted from the skill line, for the staffs damage boost you do.

Oh ok. I guess it would have helped if I read something lol. I see under the Ancient Knowledge you have to have a skill slotted. Thanks for the info guys.
