Most fun(not best) tanking class?

I'm looking to create an alt and to level undaunted/help lower level friends by tanking.

I have a tank dk for vet trials/hm achievements as my main. I know warden is also a good tank but the style seems pretty similar.

I want to know which class offers the most unique and fun change of pace. I will mostly top out at tanking vet hm dungeons so any class should work.

    Sap Tank prior to Morrowind.
All tanks right now are just buff totems and while you can go against the grain, there's virtually no point in doing so since everything is either too easy and gets destroyed instantly or too hard to actually try something different. Sure, occasionally a random build will work well enough to be interesting, maybe even fun but ZOS tends to shut those down within a patch or 2 after their discovery.

Tanking in this game needs a serious overhaul to be even remotely "fun" but that's all just IMO. Others may disagree and it's their right to do so but I personally don't find the role to be fun anymore.

I love my warden, can do basically anything that a DK but the effects are unique and interesting and the teleport is a great source of lols in PvP. Their ice cc is amazing and the effect make you feel really powerful. Now if only they would have messes with Arctic blast....

definetly warden tank/healer hybrid. Only for premade groups with 3 dd.
Ebon + SPC, or SPC + something with Ulti regen. Use Leeching vines or whatever it's called or Sanguine altar for SPC auto proc (you don't need resto). Spam Healing ticket.

NB used to be a real fun tank. With Morrowind Zos began to destroy much of the fun and most of the little left was just taken away yet again..w

I used to play (and enjoy) Warden tank/healer hybrid. With the change to Arctic Blast, I shelved him. You don't have the damage to carry a dungeon anymore.

My vote goes to the Sorcerer. It's fast, fun and you deal a lot of damage.

NightBlade tanks are fun to play, it's purely reactive tanking depending on what sets you run. Granted they've have pretty much straight nerfs but still good enough to run anything currently in the game ;)

Nightblades are definitely most different of the bunch. But each class felt like it had its own playstyle for me.

They all have advantages and disadvantages.

Sorc has resource management advantages through dark deal+balance and good cc options too (encase And rune cage). No reflect. Good reliable healing with hurricane+surge.

Templar has basically infinite resources in instances where a lot of enemies die and provides good healing. It lacks a reliable root though. Possibility to purge oneself is also nice. High resistances in focus. No reflect.

Warden feels nice and has the unique portals and also has a good offhealing kit. Nice root, two chaining options, good survivability. Major maim portals is also nice. No reflect. Purge only through blue betty, which makes you give up the fixed stam return through block.

Nightblade used to be better, but is still really tanky and can reach insane amounts of selfhealing, but has the worst cc options. The only reliable cc makes enemies run away, which is not what tanks want. No reflect.

I would pick the class that fits your theme. Especialy as a alt. I would pick a theme. Thats why i picked up a NB. Sure DK/Warden is better. But they don't fit my shadow theme.

Pick nb, go 3 dps 1 tank setup. Slot offering, ref path, sap essence and funnel health with a flex spot on your lightning / ice staff offbar. Slot dark cloak, absorb magic, pierce armor, mirage and deep thoughts. Use shield ult and any other ult that you deem useful (eots, Warhorn, soul harvest, etc). Use dragon guard + hist champion with bloodspawn / thurvokun / swarm mother.

Spam that shield ult, perma block solve. Ice staff for snares, lightning for concussed. Offering for burst heal, flex spot can be bone shield for group protection (since you are with a friend, using voice or discord, coordination is a given), shield ult + deep thoughts + swarm mother (try it, it's so... Funny in multiple mobs) slot inner fire for flex spot for those pesky range bosses (I'm looking at you zaan). For vet HM, any class is able to do it imo. If you are talking about leader boards though... Then yeah, a warden might be a good subsitute for dk.

I had the most fun on a magblade tank, Bloodletter-ish. Heals and mitigation for days. But you can't round up the mobs very well.

Worth noting too that unless it changed somewhere and I missed the memo, the clannfear heal actually comes from the clannfear and so bypasses the healing reduction that comes with balance. I’ve also heard that bound armor is incredibly strong, as in block-trial-boss-heavy-attacks-wearing-light-armor strong (haven’t tested this myself though). I haven’t been motivated to build a real tank’s tank with my sorc yet just because I always make gimmicky builds with him instead, but I suspect that it’d actually be really good if done well.

I’d probably recommend sorc for that reason if you’re looking for a different playstyle: able to pull off a variety of unique, gimmick builds, but also (I assume) able to be a potent traditional tank if desired.

But I definitely also support any other class as well. NB is my personal favorite atm.

Having played all five as stam, magic, and health based tanks, the most fun I had was with a majority stamina sorc tank. It can be tricky for sure, but once you get the hang of running literal circles around trash packs staying alive because of surge and hurricane synergy, you'll feel untouchable. The changes to dark deal and dark conversion are, imho better. The stam restore per second assures that even if you have full stam right this second, you'll have a stream coming in when you need it and have to block.

    Clanfear is a great heal.

Empowered ward ups group magicka regen. Unless you have a shroomden healer, running this is useful.

I run ice staff back bar. Aoe snare and root that persists and draws soft aggro, plus ranged interupt. If your healer isn't running ele drain (you mentioned new players) you can, and well.

I feel like I'm leaning towards NB or Sorc. They both have some unique builds.

The things that jump out the most for the fun factor is pets/shields/mobility on sorcs and shadow image/speed/ult gen on NB.

This is pretty difficult. I like the feedback from @jypcy regarding unique builds. I'd be interested to hear more specifics

My biggest, and only really, complaint with NB is the no cc. Yes, you can use webs, or Time Freeze, but they are clunky as and just not the same feel. Silver leash as a pull is great, no issues there but just the lack of a decent class cc kills it for me. Now others can make it shine so yea...matter of personal pref I say!

Nightblade tank. I kinda follow the same build most DK tanks use, but I have a lot of fun playing that class as a tank. Dark cloak is an amazing heal that only gets better with more health. I have good ulti generation and whatnot. If I need major protection, I got it. Warhorn? No prob.

If you pug, magicka templar tank is fun. It's probably the easiest tank to be able to cover group weaknesses--bad healer? add BoL and Extended ritual to the mix and you can cover for them. Bad DPS? Spam sweeps between hard-hitting boss attacks--you can put out decent DPS while still holding aggro, and the heals from sweeps keep you topped up through the chip damage.

Some unique takes I’ve done with sorc tank:
-dodge roll build with eternal hunt and morihaus. Very little damage taken, crit surge is generally enough to heal through any you do get, and constant ccs from sets (along with decent dmg).
-ulti builds, one with dragon and potentates for the cheapest warhorns possible (afaik), one with bloodspawn, werewolf hide, and perfect asylum 2h for high ulti gen (and lots of atros with major berserk). Will be playing around with dead-water’s guile now as well.

Other builds for sorc tank I think could be fun but haven’t tried yet:
-mage tank focusing exclusively on magicka and health in order to tank, deal damage, and make use of all the ice staves that you’ve held onto “just in case.” Could also possibly rock light armor.
-health stack tank. Implosion damage actually scales with max health instead of max stam/mag, so a tank with lots of health (plague doctor), decent penetration (cp, debuffs), and probably 3 bloodthirsty jewels might be fun to use to help finish everything off with big hits in execute.

Edit: also I tested and the clannfear heal is unfortunately affected by the balance debuff now, but it’s still a monstrous heal even when cut in half.

I actually enjoy more with my stamsorc, warden and stamplar tanks than with my DK.
