Not all mounts are created equal? The Imperial Horse vs Black Senche-Lion case

Greetings fellow players,

I fully know that all mounts are supposed to be equal, and the differences are purely cosmetic.
But since i don't know if i am suffering from hallucinations, for anyone possessing the two mounts i mentioned in the title... can you please do a test and report back?

The difference i find between these two mounts is that when landing after a jump done while running, the Imperial horse "stumbles" just a wee bit, and takes one second or so to regain full speed.
The Black Senche-Lion does not have this effect: after landing, the lion is immediately at top speed - no stumbles whatsoever.

I haven't tested this on other mounts, and granted it's not a huge difference. But i think it's noticeable, especially if you are in a situation where you have to jump or land often.

I'd like to understand if this is just me not taking my medication, or a real effect that someone else can confirm.

Thank you all!

That's not the only difference between mounts.

The horses are also much more likely to get "stuck" on tiny world objects, like pebbles and the such which constantly interrupts your moving speed.

I tried this and I personally see the stumble on both mount types and each slows for a fraction of a second before back up to full speed.

Cats and the dwarven spider are the smoothest rides, in terms of jumping and landing, and in navigating rough terrain. While the movement speed is the same, the smoother ride does make these two mount types effectively faster than the others, and less irritating as well.

Edit, I've heard that wolf mounts function the same way as senche, but haven't confirmed this myself.

There might be differences in the way the colliders are set up on the feet. The catch is absurd, and the delay on restart is just as bad. (pretty sure a 2000 pound tiger is gonna set me back in the saddle when it takes off.

Unfortunately, this is all but impossible to test, because the odds of picking the exact same path each time are virtually non-existent

Same crap happens with character too. Makes me wonder how often Devs spend the night in the office because a pencil rolls off someones desk and they simply can't seem to lift their foot past it, or a dropped straw in the parking lot prevents their car from rolling. The most irritating part is it's fairly apparent they level design with some of these snags purposely placed.

IDK if it's to discourage bots, or just trolling. If you can down atronachs, defeat multiple daedric entities, and save the damn planet (more than once), I'm pretty sure you'd be graceful enough to not get stuck on a blade of grass or a poorly place wheelbarrow.

I use doom wolf and it feels very nice, can jump and get around terrain well. I unlocked a guar and tried that but it slows down so much when jumping it just feels very sluggish.

The Wolf mounts (at least the White one I have) is the same as the Senche.

Well, i don't think it's really necessary to do a detailed test. I mean, i just noticed the difference when jumping from the Vulkhel Guard stairs, it's pretty obvious the difference in "stumbleness".

It follows that in more complex paths (i.e. Cyrodiil), the difference can be significant.

Anyway, thanks all for reporting back - glad to see i'm not crazy in seeing these differences!

I knew it for two years already, and I was always telling it in threads about mounts :/ It doesn't matter that your horse is Imperial - all horses ride the same :'( Now I finally have ability to capture videos to show things properly, so here is full review of all mount types in this game.

    https://youtu.be/WJs8AEIg6VA

Only horse based (including Elk) and guar based (including Kagouti) mounts slow down after jumps. On this video guar shows the worst results trying to run over the cart multiple times and only once without slowing down. Indrik will also use horse animations, so be prepared to see it slow down after jumps.
Bears, senche, wolves, camels all have equally smooth ride. Spider based mounts (Nix Ox and mechanical spider) also have smooth ride, I didn't show them on the video but can upload tomorrow if somebody wants.

Before I started buying mounts, I had only 4 basic horses. And I really hated them very soon cause of these jump-stops :'( I remember a friend told me "I'm always so sad if I fall and die from fall damage on my mount, seeing it dead breaks my heart..." And I told him how I hate my mounts and wish I could simply run fast on foot :/ Then I was reading forums and accidentally saw a thread asking which mounts people prefer. There I saw somebody mentioning how he likes senche and wolves cause of their smooth ride. It made me curious and I went to PTS to test other mounts than horses. I was shocked, and it was first time I knew I need to buy mount from the store - and not horse or guar...

Love the look of the bear mounts but all that bouncing makes me feel queasy.
So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.

Horses were originally the only mounts in the game and when they started adding other animals they had to create new animations, model frames, and textures for them which probably also included collision detection differences that involved how they landed. Improvements were made for newer mounts, anything that uses the horse animation retained the old and original design.

I've always wondered why I don't go through this. Not discounting that it does happen to some people, but I've used horses for the last 3 years and I find myself cruising over all kinds of terrain objects that I probably shouldn't. There are even time my horse will literally run over a rock protruding 2 feet from the ground.

I have wondered if speed is a factor, as I maxed mount speed on all my chars long ago. Maybe when you're faster you just sail over objects... but honestly 3 years and tonnes of time playing and I can't recall any single instance of getting hung up on an object that seemed like it shouldn't stop me or at least break my sprint.

I have two characters in Vulkhel Guard that I do daily writs with. One rides a senche, the other a wolf. They follow the same path around the crafting area to the drop boxes then to the bank. The wolf gets slowed down slightly more on the curbs along the sea wall and the jumping doesn't feel as consistent. Other than that they're pretty much the same.

Nix ox is on another level entirely. It pretty much glides over everything.

I find the sound the Nix-Ox mount makes when you slap it to move faster annoying.

I agree with this. Having several mounts, the cats are king when sprinting from keep to keep, and farther. Like riding in a 70's Caddy.

Cats have a smoother run animation. Horses were made for the base game and have outdated animations. It's the animation that makes it seem like they stumble

I mostly use cat mounts because all the horse models - even the newer ones - are just awful. If they're using the inverse kinetics their legs bend in very peculiar ways.
The cats are more anatomically correct.
The one guar I use does noticeably slow down after jumping, yes.
