Maintenance on a Bank Holiday

Small gripe - not working today (Bank Holiday in the UK), but maintenance. I guess it is just those in the UK who would otherwise have to work who miss out, so perhaps not many.

Still, not the first time. Do the powers that be understand that some of their customers sometimes do not have to work on a Monday?

Can't account for every holiday on the planet. Difficult enough just working around the major ones like Christmas, Labor Day, and International Talk like a Pirate Day.

Frustrating to have a free day and find the servers are down for patch and maintenance....

So playing around with random thoughts... as the UK is leaving Europe does this mean all the UK accounts have to move to the US server off the European server?

Not even climate change will move the UK out of Europe  ! I fail to see how the UK exiting the European Union will have any impact on the server selection. It's a European server, not a European Union server, and many playing on it currently are not in the European Union.

The Place by Tony Walsh Please Read
This is the place in the North West of England

It’s ace, it’s the best and the songs that we sing

From the stands, from our bands set the whole planet shaking

Our inventions are legends! There’s nowt we can’t make and

So we make brilliant music. We make brilliant bands

We make goals that make souls leap from seats in the stands

And we make things from steel and we make things from cotton

And we make people laugh, take the mick summat rotten

And we make you at home and we make you feel welcome

And we make summat happen, we can’t seem to help it

And if you’re looking for history then yes, we’ve a wealth

But the Manchester way is to make it yourself

And make us a record, a new number one

And make us a brew while you’re up, love. Go on!

And make us feel proud that you’re winning the league

And make us sing louder and make us believe it

that this is the place that has helped shape the world

And that this the place where a Manchester girl

Name of Emmeline Pankhurst from the streets of Moss Side

Led a Suffragette City with sisterhood pride

And this is the place with appliance of science

We’re on it, atomic, we strut with defiance

In the face of a challenge we always stand tall

Mancunians in union delivered it all

Such as housing and libraries, and health, education

And unions and co-ops, the first railway station

So we’re sorry! Bear with us! We invented commuters!

But we hope you forgive us – we invented computers!

And this is the place Henry Royce strolled with Rolls

And we’ve rocked and we’ve rolled with our own Northern Soul

And so this is the place to do business, then dance

Where go-getters and goal setters know they’ve a chance

And this is the place where we first played as kids

And me Mam lived and died here, she loved it she did

And this is the place where our folks came to work

Where they struggled in puddles, they hurt in the dirt

And they built us a city. They built us these towns

And they coughed on the cobbles to the deafening sound

Of the steaming machines and the screaming of slaves

They were scheming for greatness, they dreamed to their graves

And they left us a spirit, they left us a vibe

The Mancunian Way to survive and to thrive

And to work and to build, to connect and create and

Greater Manchester’s greatness is keeping it great

And so this is the place now we’ve kids of our own

Some are born here, some drawn here but we all call it home

And they’ve covered the cobbles, but they’ll never defeat

All the dreamers and schemers who still teem through these streets

Because this is a place that has been through some hard times

Oppressions, recessions, depressions and dark times

But we keep fighting back with Greater Manchester spirit

Northern grit, northern wit in Greater Manchester’s lyrics

And there’s hard times again in these streets of our city

But we won’t take defeat and we don’t want your pity

Because this a place where we stand strong together

With a smile on our face, Mancunians Forever

And we’ve got this* as the place where a team with a dream (*Forever Manchester)

Can get funding and something to help with their scheme

Because this is the place that understands your grand plans

We don’t do No Can Do, we just stress Yes We Can!

Forever Manchester’s a charity for people round ‘ere

You can fundraise, donate. You can be a volunteer

You can live local, give local. We can honestly say

We do charity differently, that Mancunian Way

And we fund local kids, and we fund local teams

We support local dreamers to work for their dreams

We support local groups and the great work they do

So can you …help us help… local people like you?

Because this is the place in our hearts, in our homes

Because this is the place that’s a part of our bones

‘Cos Greater Manchester gives us such strength from the fact

That this is the place. We should give something back.

Always remember. Never forget. Forever Manchester.

    or play a server-based game that's UK-centric?

& it is not a UK Bank Holiday as Scotland had this one the first week in August
despite some companies trading in Scotland not taking the earlier one and treating this as one and others taking both

Monday is one of my normal days off now, so I run into this every week, but it is annoying. Especially when it's a bank holiday and almost everyone is off work. (Except all the people working in shops, restaurants etc. who have an even busier day than normal and get to hear about how it's so nice 'everyone' gets the day off from all their customers...not that I'm still bitter about that job or anything...)

Fortunately it usually doesn't last all day, should be over by lunch time in the UK.

I have to admit though I don't understand why ESO doesn't have the same system GW2 does which allows them to update their servers without taking the entire game offline. GW2 says they can do that because of 'mega server technology' which is exactly what ZOS calls their servers, they can take 1 server down and update it, then do another one while the ones which stay online 'cover for' the offline ones. But I guess the two systems are somehow different on the backend.

I don't get the responses here. The majority of countries have the majority of their public holidays on a Monday.
Simply not having the maintenance on a Monday will avoid the vast majority of them.

Putting bank holidays across the world on an equal footing when considering maintenance times for a first-world video game makes no sense.

This is the UK we're talking about.
A significant market for ZOS, I assume, not to mention a country culturally close to that of the devs.

Taking into account the days-off of their cousins across the pond would have been a nice gesture by ZOS.

Besides, maintenance times used to take place on Tuesdays.

Always the same, they always do it on a UK bank holiday. They should mix it up and do maintenance on different bank holidays in other countries, people just want to play on their day off work. They certainly don't favour the UK that's for sure.

Putting maintenance off because one country has a holiday is nonsensical and creates unnecessary extra work.

ZOS moves it when they aren't personally in the office, which is fair enough.

I live in Hong Kong, part of one of the two richest and most powerful countries in the world. And maintenance is always up as I get home from work, regardless of holidays. I never even heard of bank holidays to be honest, had to look it up :) seems it's not a holiday that Sweden has taken after :) On the other hand, I don't really find it surprising that smaller holidays (compared to things like Christmas etc) in other countries are not really in the mind of ZoS when they make the maintenance, they are after all US based.

Would it have been nice if they had the NA and EU server maintenance seperated when it come to time and the like? Sure it would, but it's highly unlikely to happen anytime soon. Or I assume it would already have been in use.

There will always be some people who get the short end when it comes to maintenance, more often than not that is the non US based people simply because of ZoS being US based. I've gotten used to it, and it doesn't really bother me to be honest. I just do other things instead, and check the forum from time to time to see when I can start download the patch

Most Holidays are on a Monday, simply because most people want a 3 day weekend, not a 2 day weekend and then a day off in the middle of the week.

I thought for a while there, ZOS moved Maintenances to a Tuesday. This would make more sense as even when there is not a holiday, most people who take a day off to extend a weekend do so on a Monday. Friday being a day that has more deadlines and goals to meet so people are reluctant to take those off, even if they want to.

Besides, do Developers really want to cut their weekends short to get up at 2AM Sunday Night/Monday Morning or earlier to work on this stuff?

Don't have numbers but I'm pretty sure Germany, France, Russia and other large European countries also have considerable communities in ESO. You can't give considerations for one country and not the others, save the country where the devs and technicians are actually working.
