How do you like to learn a new build? Video or website?

It drives me crazy. There are a ton of youtube videos out there showing new builds. Problem is, I don't have the time or patience to watch them? My mind just can't deal with the "linear" medium that a video is. I so much prefer a well-structured website (Alcast, Dottz, Deltia) where I can check out the intro, jump to the skill-bar, scroll back to the gear and maybe look at the rotation. And I can come back the next day and look up championship point distributions and don't have to wade again through the video trying to hit the spot where they were talking about CP, stopping, fast forwarding, and going back again because you missed it.

It's frustrating.

Website. My flavor of ADD causes me to not learn well from videos, I need to read stuff in order to focus. That's why Alcast doesn't really work for me. I love Deltia's but I'm not sure if that's been abandoned or not and I haven't seen any others mentioned that don't rely heavily on video.

What passes for "builds" in this game are usually pretty simple.

3-5 gear sets, 12 skill selections, maaaybe a quick overview of optimal CP (more time on optimal CP for PvE, less for PvP where some preferences exist rather than a mathematical "best").

1 paragraph outlining the general idea and any particularly clever interactions in play. Maybe a little more outlining rotation for PvE or detailing combos/burst windows for PvP.

There's no need for a video longer than 5 minutes to convey all that, and really it can be covered much more succinctly via text+images. YMMV.

Study the tool tips online and then scratch whatever itch you think might be fun and/or successful. The thicker your skin for those “bro you can’t be serious with that build” bros the higher your own builds potential for greatness actual is. Just relying on a video runs you the risk of feeling like a blind person piloting a racecar.

I’m leveling a pet sorc now for the first time. I had multiple people say “you’ll get made fun of for it” to which I essentially said I don’t give AF, I’ll make it work. And if anything, I learned yesterday that yeah buddy, it’s gonna work.

LOL. I am feeling misunderstood. I am using those websites as inspiration to see if there are new ideas out there. Their builds are usually just starting points, but I still want to get their basics right in order to avoid running off in the wrong direction. Also, I am missing knowledge and experience for full-scaled theorycrafting. I have to start somewhere.

great to see folks writing that they prefer thinking stuff up on their own (by being familiar with the gear sets, champion points, class/weapon/armor abilities, mundus', potions, glyphs) - as opposed to trying to "copy" someone else's thoughts and ideas...

granted BiS and meta do exist, and, many times a lot of us will reach a similar destination with our characters...

a big part of the fun of eso though is trying to imagine and realize different ways to build and play your characters...

we all have our favorite sites - generally though I start here:

    https://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Skills

    and then move to here:

    https://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Sets

what's cool in that situation is that fexelea actually plays on my server/platform - it's cool seeing them call out some directions every once in a while in cyrodiil zone chat :)

When I am trying to figure out something new, I'd prefer a website to lay it all out for me so I can easily see the exact part of the build information I am looking for. Sometimes short videos emphasizing skill rotation, changed skills, new gear, combination of the above...those I like too. I have no patience whatsoever for half hour videos, I get bored. No offense to the creators of the videos, they are totally fine, they just don't work for my brain.

Not much to build here (it's not Path of Exile, you know), more like micromanagement after patch nerfs.

Website. I hate watching gaming videos of any sort, particularly when they contain information I'm trying to assimilate. On a website, I can easily pause at the bit I want, scroll back and forth, etc. and it is mercifully free of "witty" commentaries.

I make written guides and videos for my builds. Here is the difference.

Written guides are short and simple.

Videos are the same with the addition of a long and detailed version.

When I make a build video, I spend the first few minutes quickly showing what I use. Rest of the video (my videos are close 1 hour) is very detailed info about pretty much everything.

The reason you can't find a very detailed written guide is because it takes so much time. While making a video, you just press a button and start speaking and press button again when done. So much easier.

It's not even about that half an hour. It's about the second, third or twelfth time I look up that build. It's nearly impossible to skip through that video to find where they were talking about how to enchant the armor or what traits to use.

But that's exactly my point. It's easy for you to make them (and I am happy you take the time), but it is hard for many to follow them. You may have 3000 views, but how many are still there at the 30th minute or at the end of the video?

I think it comes down to the viewer and the person who makes the video. If the viewers want to learn everything the video owner offers, they will watch the video. If they don't have time, can always drop a comment under it saying "I can't find time to watch all of it, can you tell me what do you use in this armour piece?" or whatever question they wanna ask. Personally, I answer to pretty much everything including the comments that ask for things that are already mentioned in the video because I understand that people may not have time to watch it all. So yeah, just drop a comment and you should get an answer even if it is in the video.

I like to browse sets and skills on the Wiki and test out stuff on the PTS. I am still pretty new to the game but I have always been a big theorycrafter in past games, so I spend a lot of my time doing this. Still though, looking up meta builds has been helpful for me to get a grasp of why things are chosen and important. I just find it a bit of a bummer because so many choices are so important and/or integral that it leaves me with like 1 flex spot. I still enjoy the meta setups for healers (haven't tried DD or tank yet), but once I figure out why the meta is the meta, it's hard to pull away from it. Ultimately it's my choice, but I still want to bring the most to my group so I suppose I feel obligated to run it.

I prefer to read instead of watch and sometimes use websites as a starting point. Most of the time I listen to the chat going on in Discord when people are discussing builds and scribble things down on sticky notes.

I'm lucky to have a couple of really good players as guild mates that enjoy trying to tweak every little point they can out of a veritable plethora of builds (always fun to work the word plethora into a conversation) and are willing to share. One will go with you to the practice dummy and as you go through your rotation will tell you if you are early late or right on with the skills as you toss them out there. Even with an iffy build spending around a half hour with him will show noticeable improvements. He will suggest gear and/or skill changes but will work with you to get better whether you take his gear advice or not. Simply listening to him and others talk about what sets and rotations work best for different dungeons/trials/bosses is for me probably the greatest resource for figuring out a build that will work for me.
and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."
