If you want to be a stamina based DK, you’ll want to use medium armor. However, I don’t recommend that, as while it can be an effective class, it’s not a simple one as is. I would recommend going a Magicka route, and use Heavy (more survivabilty) or Light (more damage). And I would recommend Heavy until you get the hang of the game.

Also, great racial choice! It’s the best for MagDK.

If you want to DPS, than sticking with Dual wield is ok, but a destruction staff will be better for sustain. Once you’re able to have 2 weapon sets, you’ll be able to add Dual Weild, for DPS, or 1h/shield for tanking.

You’re best bet tho, is to research (Magicka DK PvE builds eso) on YouTube. And check out a few videos. That’ll give you an idea of how you should build your character.

    Magicka vs Stamina:
More magicka on your character makes abilities with staves and abilities that cost magicka do more damage or heal more

More stamina on your character makes abilities with physical weapons and abilities thst cost stamina do more damage and heal more.

For stamina think melee combat with swords daggers axes and bows.

For magicka think casting spells and using staves.

    For Race:
Dunmer DK is excellent for magicka dps class with fire destruction staff. This is because of the additional fire damage you get from class passive and a lot of magicka based abilities the dk have are fire damage. Same with the best destruction staff abilities.

If you want to dual wield and use melee weapons and bows then going for a stamina option and race of redguard is probably your best bet. In saying that.... you can still play dunmer it just wont pump out as much damage. But honestly its fine. Just not optimised.

    For armor wieght:
Light armor is best for magicka based casters because the passives give you much better bonuses to magicka regeneration and general spell damage

Medium armor is best for stamina melee fighter types because the passives give much better bonuses to stamina regeneration and general physical damage.

Heavy gives more tanky bonuses for survivability.

I recommend as you level to wear a combination of all med/light/heavy that way they will all rank up and you can have options later. To earn the heavy/medium/light skill lines you must equip 5 items of that wieght and then kill something or earn some xp. That will open up the skill line under 'armor' in your class skill sheet.

    For Tanking or Dps:
You chose the right class. Dks make excellent tanks. To answer your question about roots you have talons, morph to choking talons, which is an amazing aoe root for a tank. Skills like chains also pull enemies to you which is a very beneficial skill amd longer range than the one available to all classes.

Generally for tanking you would have a mix of resources so some health stamina and magicka to suit your needs instead of just putting all attributes into stamina/magicka like dps and healers do.

The best tank races due to class passives are likely argonian, nord and imperial. Your dunmer will be ok though. Just not ideal

    Overall:
Your dunmer dk will be able to perform all roles very well in time with some adjustments to gear and attribute points. It will however, due to class passives for fire damage/resist and magicka and stamina pools, be best suited to magicka based dps with staff. Dunmer is also an excellent race for pvp :)

I hope this gives you a little understanding!

I suggest as always you check out alcasthq.com for additional levelling advice and new player guides.

    Finally....dunmer dk is amazing. Enjoy!

I’m regards to the post above this, you can/will be a melee DPS with a Magicka DK as well, for the most part. It’s an exception to the norm.

Dunmer is best a magdk. Level up wearing at least 1 of all the armor weights so they’ll be fifty when you hit fifty. For a tanky magdk leveling go Destro/restro in 5 light, 1 heavy, 1 medium.

Use Burning Embers, Flame Lash, burning (or choking talons), fossilize, elusive mist (go vampire). Ferocious leap.

Igneous shields, volatile armor, cauterize, Structured Entropy, coagulating Blood, and bats.

Great starting place. At cp 160 go sword and board/ SnB. Be a brawler in PvP.
