Let's say i come up with a build that is not meta but is still pretty bad ass...unique enough to be "good."

if i played with it over time consistently, would it be BADASS, just elite cuz its unique and i have mastered it like a different style of martial arts? you get the idea!

really interested in your thoughts!

In PVP, yeah, you'll become badass, because player skill counts.

In PVE, you'll always have to deal with the meta-chasers doubting your build even though you can complete content just fine.

I'm biased because I dislike the whole "Meta" BS but I would most certainly say you can come up with your own build and be an absolute beast with it.

Actually it would only be badass if it were good. If you think you came up with a cool or unique build, but it's terrible. There is nothing badass about that IMHO.

    nope, meta meta metaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
If it's DPS role, for example, then DPS is king. And the only way to achieve the top notch numbers is by going with the meta.

But to be fair, we need to define what is "badass" before saying whether an alternative play style can reach that threshold.

Performance speaks for itself. The things that become “meta” tend to become so because they perform well. Doesn’t matter what your build is if you play it well. This is for PvP of course, which is the far more dynamic game mode. In PvE, things are more mechanical and calculated and so it’s meta or get out in higher tiers of play. .

Listen it sounds like you don't want to be part of the meta and that's cool. Design a build, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of that build. Learn to play to it's strengths and weaknesses. Practice. Will you be as good as a meta player? Probably not, but I think you'll have more fun.

Well the meta is the meta usually cause its the best setup, you can still do great with a off meta build though if you have the skill to make it work.

You need to know your own playstyle and make a build which fits for you most.
Following "meta" is a good way to start if you are new for PvP, but sooner or later you'll be able to create a build which is the most suitable for you. Sometimes people ends to use the meta builds anyways, but that's fine.
For some players meta fits like a nose in the face, but sometimes own custom build is the best choice to go.

PVP is primarily about player skill. Skill matters FAR more than tiny nuances in build or gear.

And I have very little skill.

i think there is way less meta in PVP then PVE. You can take the same class and play it different with different gear setups and both people can be excellent pvp players. Find a playstyle you enjoy that fits a class you have already have and build around that. Test it out and adjust. I recently thought i had a great build but realize my sustain wasnt there so i had to throw the build away.

PvP is more about reflexes, situational awareness, knowing the tactics used by other players and groups (that are constantly changing and are very diversed), it's about knowing when to attack, when go defensive, when to lure or stay stealthed etc. When you'll learn that, your build and playstyle will be automatically adjusted to character you play and how you play.

I always created builds by myself, don't know are they meta or not because I don't track it. What I know is that they all work. These builds are not perfect from very beginning but after few hours of playing I know where to make some adjustments and guess what? I can be pretty effective on any class - but being effective doesn't mean you need to kill others easily, it depends on your role.

Look, man. Just post YouTube compilation videos of the few times that you win against people. So what if you lose 90% of the time. If you edit the YouTube video right- it'll look like your build is OP. Then everyone will want to run it. Easy Peasy.

Let's say that you die 75 out of 100 encounters that you run into. If you only post the 25 encounters that you win- all the potatoes will follow you. Just make sure that you edit your video correctly. You'll be a YouTube/Twitch sensation in no time!

Want to enjoy the game more? Try both PvP (crybabies) and PvE (carebears). You'll get a better perspective on everyone's opinion.

Both. Developing a personal playstyle and pushing it to excellence is definitely a crucial part of your growth as a pvp player.

However, meta cannot be ignored simply because you don't want to be like everyone else, and will likely need to be incorporated to some extent.

Some people just have more playtime and more dedication than most of us ever will, and their research, founded on countless hours of testing and design, can be very valuable.
