Story/RP: Joining Psijic Order compulsory or not?

Just looking for a spoiler-free yes/no answer to help me decide which of my characters to play first in Summerset.

Are we forced (i.e. no option to decline without blocking main story completion) to join the Psijic Order?

The Psijic Order quests uses 2 totally different NPCs as main story characters - well 3 really

if you count Bob the skull

than the Psijic order NPCs that are used for the main quest.
