Going though the store, Crown Gems is another layer of funny money.

How does one get these gems because I can't seem to figure it out.

You can break stuff down from the crates (I think when you get duplicates?) for the gems. It's a sort of consolation prize for not getting what you wanted.

Well, so much for that mount.

    Thanks for the answer, @SBC

I think the duplicate stuff (except potions and consumables) automatically converts to gems, but you can manually convert almost anything you dont want that comes from a crate. I just did a bunch of potions, as well as xp and research scrolls.
I believe mounts and emotes will not convert unless they are duplicates though.

You break down consumable stuff into gems too. The crown gems build up from the free crates they give out periodically.

Getting gems is simple (but tedious/expensive)
you are granted gems when-ever you get a double of an item from a crown crate, however in the crown crate menu (f3) there is a gem extraction option which lets you convert certain items (usually consumables and furnishings) from the crown crate into even more gems

    Full stop, @notyuu

This isn't simple. This is pure stupid. Having to buy crates just to get gems is idiotic beyond words.

The least ZoS could do is offer gems as a direct purchase.

They can't do that. People would not buy Crates. Crates are a variable payoff (for them) that some players are willing to invest a considerable amount of time and expense into. (At least, time and expense compared to what I invest in them) I am sure that ZOS makes lots of money from them, or we would be seeing them doing a lot more "tuning" to make it that way.

They can do that, but won't do that because people ARE buying crates.

To fix this requires people stop buying crates, but that's never going to happen.

I never said it was smart nor easy, I just said that it is simple, because it is simple due to having literally 2 steps
    1: open crate
    2: extract gems

It's not that they can't do it, it's that there's no reason to.

Remember, the Crown Gems are the consolation prize for getting duplicates in Crown Crates.

Why would that be sold separately? It would defeat the entire purpose of them.

(after all, they could have just said "Oh, you got a dupe? Such a shame, tough luck.")

I have never bought any crown crate but received several already from in game events, also I got the special pie, exchanged it for 400 gems and immediately bought a lava guar B) . Also getting single gems to another I already got about 80 gems which I keep for a mount that costs 100 gems. Few more crate events and I'll have my prize :).
This crate system is perfectly made and I have no reason to complain.
Just find your way how to obtain as many crates and gems as possible without actually paying a single coin. It's possible with a bit of luck - finding Resplendent Sweetroll is a luck one for a milion:).
