Funding Your Costume Craze

So the new Outfitting system has come out and you've been so excited to use all those motifs you learned and all those dyes you achieved to make your characters look amazing!

Wait. It costs how much to make my outfit and dye it?

ZOS, do you think I'm made out of gold?!

Okay, to be truthful, I've got around 4 million gold between my characters so, yeah, I'm pretty much made out of gold for the purposes of outfitting costs. That doesn't mean I'm going to spend gold with no plan for how to make it back. Besides, I've got lots of friends and guildies with less gold than that.

I'm a firm believer in "teach a man to fish" when it comes to making money in ESO. So I'll share how I'm planning to fund my costuming craze.

1. Farm lots of raw materials and potion reagents and sell them on guild stores or zone chat. I like to alternate between farming Craglorn (for that 1 in 200 chance at getting nirncrux) and a starter island because there are tons of mats there in a tiny area. (i might give the starter island a miss for a while because it'll be overrun with new players and alts).
2. Kill a bunch of things and find a bunch of chest while I farm and vendor all the junk gear for a slow but steady profit. Good set gear I can sell on my guild stores.
3. Steal from and murder a whole bunch of NPCs in order to vendor the stolen loot.
4. Save all the ornate gear from group dungeons so I can vendor it.

How are the rest of you planning to fund your outfits with in-game gold?

(In-game gold options only, please. If you are planning to use the Crown Store tokens for convenience, that's awesome for you, but less helpful to anyone trying to use only in-game gold for outfits.)

Spend sparingly. I only want to change a select few pieces that I can't craft myself.

I am sitting at only 300,000g too.

So can you buy outfit slots with gold? I could only see the crown store option. So I'd have to say the first answer to your question is with a credit card, right?

After that, it's easy. Harvest mats, grind mobs, do quests, sell stuff. It's the first step that's troublesome.

I'm planning on using the free outfit slot to give each of my characters who doesn't wear a costume their preferred combo of craftable gear. One-off cost to be determined, but it won't be much compared to buying and furnishing their houses!

I doubt that any will want a second slot so they can change looks. There are some that will swap between armored outfit while out adventuring, and casual costume at home or in town, but that works with just the free one.

You pay with gold or tokens to change your styles and dyes.

Funding costumes is a two part thing.

    1. Make more money
    2. Spend less money

My plan, at least until I can build my funds up over time, is to limit myself to one costume, and actively trade. Normally I just use mats and gear for crafting for myself, and gain money slowly over time, but I think right now I'll have to actively try to sell stuff and make money, instead of just letting it come as it does. Guh, I wish I could just spend my crowns on convenience things, but now I really have to save them for crown exclusive things. I sadly only have only so much irl cash - and that's not even talking about how much time I have available to invest.

Man, ESO is getting more and more expensive by the week...

My gold swings wildly between a few hundred thousand across my account to almost zero depending on what's on the luxury vendor. So to fund outfit changes I'm basically going to have to not buy things I like from the perfectly-functional gold sink to fund this completely-unnecessary gold sink. I'm already doing sales on the guild traders and all the other tricks so there's really no "strategy", there's just "suffering". Never mind the struggle of more casual players who are funding the rest of us by buying our mats off the traders. They're just *** out of luck, apparently.

So for us console players, how exactly does the outfit system work?

If I want to dye my equipment or costume, do I have to pay gold?

If I want to change my look, say an axe to a sword, do I have to pay gold?

How much does it cost to change the look of your equipment, say head to toe, everything combined?

Costumes are dyeable for free with ESO+ like usual.

    For the outfit:
Dyeing your outfit and/or weapon costs gold.
Changing your outfit and/or weapon costs gold.
The cost of changing your outfit and/or weapon depends on the style of the motif chosen.

i remember years ago, when my god daughter was about 8 or so, downloading this silly app on the ipad for her called dress shop...

she was only in to it for a couple of weeks - I totally got hooked for a couple of months :#

at this point, i have a handful of polymorphs, 20 plus costumes, a bunch of disguises (got rid of most when they stopped working in cyrodiil), unlocked a whole lot of different motifs, and have oodles and oodles of dyes...

i think i may be okay with not participating in the whole "outfit" sysyem...

finally gonna buy a house though so I have a decent place to store my chests and coffers...

What is the gold range we are looking at. Lets say Xivkyn, how much does that cost to change to? Are the base racial motifs the same cost and how much?

@VaranisArano thanks for the info, I just got onto the forums and it seems like all hell broke loose with DB and Update 17. I was hoping to see some really good feedback on the outfit system and see some creative outfits but it seems as though ZOS blew it??

Thanks ZOS for a bunch of Bull

Weapon dying should of been included in No Outfits so ESO Plus Subscribers could Dye their weapons. Right now as an ESO Plus Member you can dye No Outfit Armor at no cost so why not Weapons.

Even the fees to change and Dye Armor and Weapons to a particular outfit style is way out of line. You people are ruining your own game. This new update so far is pathetic.

I recommend this thread for great costume ideas: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/394909/show-off-your-outfits-megathread/p1

Most of the griping is coming from sticker shock over the gold cost for dyeing and motifs and the cost of addition outfits per character in the Crown Store.

I don't know the exact motif costs, though they increase based on rarity. So base racial motifs cost lots less than say, Hlaalu pieces. Here's a thread that might have more info: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/395069/are-the-gold-costs-for-outfit-changes-to-dang-high/p1

I am already struggling to fund my housing craze. so I'm not going to fund outfits, because this? will break me. I would like to have some time left over to actualy, you know.. PLAY the game rather then spend most of it farming just to afford to change a few appearances. so unless the prices get significantly reduced? I'm not doing anything to fund this system. I'm avoiding it the way i avoid shopping at expensive clothing stores.

Yeah, not making an outfit is saving me gold, too.

I was going to use outfits, but I've come to the realization it doesn't do what I need it to. My one character who doesn't wear costumes has been stuck wearing a less-ideal chest piece because I like it's appearance. But it's not a motif appearance, so I can't make an outfit of it & equip a better chest. And the rest of her gear is crafted, so it already looks like I want.

edit: hmm, my mule isn't wearing a costume, either. But she is wearing a full set of looted civilian clothes. Wonder if those will go into the outfit system alongside the prisoners outfit when I log into her. Somehow doubt it.

I don't care about outfits since my characters usually look pretty good just wearing their gear as I try to keep ugly sets well hidden by only exposing small parts like belt or gloves and dyeing those the same colors as the rest of the armor. Housing is kinda meh, as I was waiting for storage to be introduced with it at the start, and when it came it's almost redundant since I've managed to store what I needed on low level chars. And on top of that it appears to be bugged and delete your items under yet not fully known circumstances, so it appears that I'll wait a couple of months before I actually use those chests.

That's basically two updates within a year that meant absolutely nothing to me, besides the combat changes they brought. I find farming materials completely mind numbing, and I only go to collect on my surveys every couple of months, when all of them are stacked 3-4 deep for maximum efficiency. In a way I'm glad some people find the patience to farm them and make them available in large quantities on guild stores, so I can buy them in bulk and turn in writs for a hefty profit. As for materials and in game currency I have more than enough to buy almost every house available for gold, and probably furnish 3/4 of them, but I find no urge to sink my precious time in such a futile undertaking.

I'd be quite happy if they stopped rushing half baked content to the live server just for the sake of cosmetics, and breaking the more sensitive parts of the game, such as combat, dungeon and trial mechanics and stop changing combat for the sake of change, and breaking it even more. I await the chapter with stoicism since I know that behind the enchanted landscape of Summerset yet another heavy blow of the Nerfhammer comes.
