Mentorship

Greetings everyone.

I think many new players are lost with no idea what they should do and what they shouldn't. Mentoring could be a great way to help new players.

Here's how I see it :
  • An experienced player can propose to a new player to become his "mentor".
  • Mentorship can be stopped at anytime, by any of the two players. Leaving players can not have a new "student"/mentor for a week.
  • The new player can only have one mentor at a time.
  • The mentor can only have one student at first. If he's a good mentor, he will be allowed to have more.
  • Every time a student reaches a goal, the mentor win mentorship points, allowing him to get more students, but also a win some crowns. The hardest the goal, the more points/crowns.

Here is a list of some goals. Each goal can only be completed once. For example, once you have finished a dungeon, finish any dungeon being the same or another won't work anymore.

TIER 1 : these are the basics. It should be very simple and take very little time. Reward will be very low.
  • Finish a daily quest
  • Resurrect someone
  • Craft an item
  • Research a trait
  • Deconstruct an item
  • Harvest some material
  • Refine material
  • Use potion
  • Use poison
  • Recharge weapon
  • Eat some food
  • Catch a simple fish
  • Enter Cyrodiil
  • Enter any arena
  • Train his mount

TIER 2 : these are simple. Any player should be able to do it with some easy tips or with a random group. Reward will be low.
  • Kill a world boss
  • Destroy an anchor
  • Finish a normal dungeon
  • Catch a rare fish
  • Capture ressource in Cyrodiil
  • Capture a keep
  • Kill a player in Cyrodiil or in arena
  • Finish a trial
  • Finish normal maelstrom arena

TIER 3 : these become harder. Player should have to learn in order to finish it or have a good group to finish it. Reward will be average.
  • Finish a trial
  • Finish normal maelstrom arena
  • Win an arena
  • Finish a veteran dungeon

TIER 4 : this should be challenging for most of the player base and should require knowledge and practice. Reward will be high.
  • Finish a veteran trial
  • Finish a veteran dungeon in hard mode
  • Finish veteran maelstrom arena
In order to be rewarded, the mentor should have done this goal himself before or be doing this with the student.

Also, it would be nice if the mentor could go in any solo instance the student is. Obviously, the mentor wouldn't be able to interact with anything but he will be able to see what his student does and give him tips to finish what he is doing.

Great you have given this some thought.

It's the kind of thing that guilds are for tho. To be honest I've often helped people out in exactly this way. But can see your points

Guilds are the mentor system in MMORPGs. Especially with the long list of items including trials and vet trials.

Essentially, few worth their salt would be mentors since many are already mentors in multiple guilds. Essentially many decent social guilds would be able to help early on. There are many raiding guilds that help those newer to raiding to continue the progression then there are the more solid raiding guilds with stronger requirements that are helpful for the HM trials.

All along that path advice and help are available.

FF14 has a great system in place for this. There are qualification checks, mostly doing things like dungeons, quests and fates a lot. Once you qualify, you get a different icon in a special chat channel just for helping players.

On a side note, they also have a great system for commodations in du gowns, telling what people are helpful, useful or good at their job.

    Whaddiyatalkinabeet?

You proposing ZOS intruduce a form of mentoring? Would be nice to be able to look for assistance from time to time, but that's what the chat and/or guilds are for already, just don't get the 'rewards' you mentioned.

I've never liked the concept of mentorship, as that's basically what guilds are for. Also, your tier 2 is ***. Destroying an anchor is definitely not on the same level as finishing a trial, normal dgn, or normal Maelstrom. I can solo anchors (while one hand is occupied [I was eating], it's literally too easy), but on the flip side, it took me like 7-10 deaths to make it through nMA.

Not bad idea but instating a official system has potential for abuse

i have 1300 hours ingame with @ 2m AP but i'd still want a mentor for PVP. I can 1vX the people that spam the light attack, but against any decent player i am very much losing. And i want advanced training, i'm not beginner

There was another game I played which had it, and it was occasionally abused where people mentoring required in game payment, or a 'cut' of the loot, etc. But it was generally positive as a one on one intro to the game. The only perks were house items, xp boost, and a special title while mentoring. Which honestly was good enough.

I'm all for some kind of mentorship mechanic in the game. Even just a simple ring of mara type deal, where two players get small bonuses for playing together, could work. Better yet, something like - and I hate to say this - Destiny, where you could get some cool emotes and shaders (dyes) for doing a checklist of activities in the game with them.

What about no? Just sounds like you can pay to win by gains from ‘mentor’ 50 otherr accounts.

Eh. I think it's a good idea but most people would never do it. I wouldn't for fear of being assigned the 55 year old new mmo-er who can't figure out how to move the mouse to get the mob visible in their computer screen.
