So after 3 years I finally decided to make a PVE tank. Why you ask? Well never played one before and I really enjoy it, my undaunted took 3 days to max it out and tbh it's a lot of fun...... except when you decide to use group finder and pug some dungeons and for the most part it's fine since my toon is very young and I still need to do a few quest in some of the dungeons. But what gets me pissed off is when you see CP lvls anywhere from 450-690 and they are DPS or healers and you watch them and wonder.... how the hell did you come this far in this game with spamming bow light attacks, using a 2h for DPS and your only rotation is light or heavy attack and uppercut or your only means of healing is healing ward. So to all the tanks out there I must first off by saying I'm sorry and next how do you put up with dealing with people like that?

P.s I just left a group because everyone in the group was killed by adds not even a boss fight by adds in darkshade II right at the beginning when they where running up at the start...

You picked up probably the worst time for playing tank. I am not mentioning all the changes and health based tank meta.

But the pug is real. The most annyong position to be among them is a tank. Don't try to feed me with crap like: 90% of the ppl is still learning.

Back in a day it was like Lfg tank v16 for daylies and in 95% u were able to grab reliable group.

Group finder is the last thing u want to use, not even mention that u cant remove specific person from the group afterwards.

Find yourself a decent guild for daylies and work with them only, to make sure ur mental health will stay intact.

I mean, as long u are a decent tank operator urself, are u? Do u chain, do u setup agro for quick burn and the most importantly I hope u are not moving boss unless neccasary? War Horn?

All the above I'm done using group finder as my tank and I even went full meta with the gear going 5 ebon 5 alkosh and 2 bloodspawn

honestly im doing hundreds of normal dungeons as tanks with pug groups and very few issues...yeah from time to time you have a low damage group or people aren't really paying attention or listening and you whipe here and there but overall it's really not as bad as people make it out to be...

Normal dungeons sure pretty easy most of the time I'll hope on my DPS and just solo a normal dungeon but we are talking about vet dungeons and the vet dlc dungeons

What's up with the 2h sneer? Are you not able pull decent dps numbers with it? I'm average at best and solo dungeons and WB'S all the time with it. Sure I can get higher numbers using the same cookie cutter set up as every other dps, but damn that's boring af.

I love tanking like my brother loves healers. Which leaves us in a bind when dps sucks...I tank with a sorcerer, so if the dps isn't there I go all out with my 26k dps in heavy armor trading agro with the healer, my brother, who can handle the occassional beating.

But, that doesn't excuse the fact that it is always the tanks fualt or healers...never the bow spammer...if only there was a way to make people better...

    I made a suggestion earlier: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/390002/idea-training-dungeon-for-all-roles

On another note entirely (and partially inspired by this thread) I decided to run some random normals with my PVP Imperial tank for poops and giggles. Didn't swap out any gear whatsoever (I run Werewolf Hide and Seventh Legion in Cyrodiil) or even change CP, but I did slot Channeled Focus and Pierce Armour instead of Binding Javelin and Vigor. Used Ritual of Retribution for my initial pulls, then spammed Biting Jabs after applying taunt, Heroic Slash, Power of the Light, and Channeled Focus, then spammed Reverse Slice for executes. Funnily enough, I actually enjoyed myself and didn't run into any of the issues I encountered with my DK tank. Magicka was never an issue thanks to Channeled Focus, and I never ran out of stamina thanks to Repentance (only had to use heavy attacks on boss fights with few adds). Also had enough damage to make up for any groups lacking in the damage department. I wouldn't run vet dungeons with the build, but it's fun enough for random normals.

I think ultimately it's all about tapering the builds that you can use at the top. Think of a pyramid, the base is your entry level normal dungeons. But as you progress upwards and towards harder endgame, the builds and gear sets that you can optimally use lessens in variety, because you need to have more specialised gear sets and tuned builds.

But take the time to know your class, it's strengths and weakness', how it works and how certain roles changes the dynamics of the class. It's no use having a Meta build and bis gear but not knowing how to tank in the first place yeah? Hope this helps op, happy to know there are more players trying out tanking in this game.

Ways to deal with pug dungeons as a tank.

    - Run a set combo that lets you stay alive and sustain on your own while being able to throw out a little group support and damage. Specifically for group finder dungeons, I run a combo of ebon, lord warden, and seventh legion on my warden tank. the ebon and lord warden provide great defense and group support while the seventh legion allows me to pump out decent damage or off heals if the group gets in trouble or can't deal enough damage.
    - Only run dungeons you are confident tanking without group communication or group support (don't expect every healer to have shards or orbs). I limit myself to only tanking non-dlc vet dungeons and normal dlc dungeons when using group finder.
    - If you use group finder, also use an attitude that the people you are probably going to be grouped with are not going to be top tier gamers. If you see issues that may be easy to solve, offer your advice, but don't expect the player to follow it and don't threaten to kick if they don't. Finish the dungeon, say tyfg, and be on your way.

I've been using group finder since it launched to complete daily pledges and still have fun with it, but I know what to expect when I use it. And if the groups start to get to you, you can always join a guild or use zone chat to find a group that meets the standards you want in a group.

Dinosaur Chicken Nuggets - Argonian mNB Tank/Heals (PVP)
Strawberry Semifreddo - Dunmer mSorc DPS // Sunny D-Light - Breton mTemp Heals
Peanut Butter Sandwich - Orc sDK DPS // Kellogg's Frosted Flakes - Argonian mWard Tank/Heals (PVE)

    I love tanking.

With the exception of a few fights, I no longer warn groups in normal dungeons about mechanics. If they die because they don't know what's going on, they'll listen better after I explain the mechanic.

I always warn groups in FG2 to not kill Cirenas' spiders, because I do not have the time to whale on her with full resistances. It takes forever.

One of the things I see A LOT of people talking about is normal dungeons and I'm not talking about normal dungeons at all only vet dungeons and vet DLC dungeons. I have had some great runs in pug groups in vet dungeons and vet DLC dungeons but about 70% of the time all I'm seeing is DPS VPN RANK 400-690 not pulling any DPS or running odd set ups like destro+bow yes destro+bow on a sorcerer CP690 or running a dungeon that should not take but 30 min tops and we are in there for over an hour. I don't mind helping people out with understanding mechanics of a vet dungeon but these guys are acting as if they have never played the game or just ending up buying someone's account. And they thought they would gitgud at the game by being over or at the CP cap. Earlier today I was running the last vet dungeon and one of the DPS keep crying in voice chat that he was getting killed because the boss keep going after him.... well he was running a 2h one hand and shield set up and he keep hitting the boss with taunt. Don't get me wrong I love my new tank since I never played one but damn the things that full time tanks have gone through in this game... hats off to you guys for being the real OP boss in vet dungeons

Tanking dungeon's in the next dlc should get a lot easier with Ulfnor’s Favor. Combine that with Fortified Brass and Infernal Guardian and you shouldn't even need resolve/ward. Slot structured entropy for the health boost and sit back and hit the puncture/bone shield/block button until your dps get the picture they don't have enough dps and get worn out and quit. Then when you get people who are committed to finishing the dungeon like yourself put on your higher stress gear and go for the vet dlc monster helm.
