So I have finally decided on a location I wish to purchase, only issue is that a bit of land I wish to use has stones where I want grass.

I've seen people make houses look like caves.

What can I do to turn these stones into grass or vegetation?

Put down lots of short plants, pushed into the ground so that the top layer of leaves show through. A lot of the plants in the Formal Garden Crown Kit would do this nicely.

But it would be nice to have a grass furnishing like the carpets. But that would mean grass would have to be of a certain size and or shape that might not fit with all landscapes. Actually, from what I have seen, most square and rectangular shapes would leave a lot to be desired, not to mention the changes in ground elevation affecting this too.

We really need something like this

There are a lot of plant furnishings available from the housing vendors in various zones. I've been very tempted to try buying a relatively flat-topped tree and shove it way into the ground to see if I can emulate a whole bunch of bushes.

Ideas (not including stuff bought for crowns):

Hedges sunk into the ground make a semi-passable grassy area, but ZO$ really need to make proper lawns for a more realistic effect. Although this would be difficult as they would have to have flat surfaces to sit on.

I did have success shoving a Fabricant Electrum tree into the ground deep enough that it looks like a bunch of bushes. So a regular, relatively flat-topped tree might also work if ground cover is what you want.

I wonder if you wouldn't have some success by using some of the green-toned carpets to make a base, then fill in with the tops of plants and trees. Might get a fuller look with less objects.

** Oh, and another idea- what about ashen moss turned on its side? https://eso.mmo-fashion.com/vines-ashen-moss/

@Aurelle where do we get these hedges?

I get mine from the Crown Store. They are quite cheap.

The large tall hedges turned on their sides give the most coverage.

Lay hedges sideways, sink em down into ground and try scattering flowers and other plants here and there along with some pebbles and rocks.

I personally suggest the hedges by far.

A simple rotation, burying them to level a surface of the hedge to the ground makes awesome grassy spaces. Just be sure to level and combine them right so you arent getting stuck.

All you have left from there are a few add-ons, like your flowers, shrubs and rocks, plants, etc.

Or, you can just leave it as an open grassy area.

I think you can get hedges from the furnisher NPC in Alinor if you don't want to use the crown store (could be wrong)

If you want a grass effect I agree with the suggestion to use hedges turned on their side and sunk into the ground. Other things can work, but the advantage of this approach is it uses relatively few items to cover large areas. The tricky part is getting it at just the right angle, as the ground is rarely flat and if you put it too low down you get bare patches, but too high up can make it hard to walk over, which ruins the illusion a bit. Also the edges tend to be very square and that doesn't always look natural, but you can cover the corners with other objects, or position then where you want paths and things that would have straight edges.

As an example this is the courtyard of Mournoth Keep. Top image is the default, and the bottom is my version.

There's a lot of plants there but the main two covering the cobbles are Hedge, Dense High Wall on the left (I'm still tweaking the position) and Hedge, Overgrown Long on the right. Across the middle I used some of the shrubs from the Trees of Tamriel pack, mainly Plants, Dense Underbrush and Plants, Dry Underbrush. The smaller plants will blend into the surroundings better, but you can't cover big areas as easily.

Are you on pc and use addons ? Eht addon you can add grass , dirt , rain. snow , all types of effects to homes.fx don’t take item slots and they tend to open item slots as well.
