Maintenance for the week of March 9:

Superstitions and old wives tales.

Over the last two years I’ve heard some pretty wild and totally unfounded claims. From superstitions like Don’t touch the pinions, or secret crafting sites that gives more tempers when you refine. Then there’s the old wives tales like what you can and can’t do against the mage in VAA.

What are some of your favorites over the years. Or do you have some of your own?

    • Maintenance helps the game run better.
    • Patches solves bugs and issues.
    • PVPs whining for nerfs doesn’t affect PVE.
    • The drop rate for Clockwork/Fabricated furnishing plans is working as intended.
    • Wardens as a DD is fine in PVE.
    • Magicka melee DDs are in a good spot.

Still can be. Just ignore the grumpy one(s).

Werewolf/Vamp thing. Just had someone try to convince me of this a couple days ago.

It would be interesting but I don't think folks have the patience for that (understandable if you can't play during the time slot and have to wait another month, would be frustrating).

Why should you not push the pinions? it restore resources.

Nodes and chests with items left in it don't respawn.
    Pets steal agro from tank.
You have the old one about some with the treasure hunter passive should open chests in dungeons.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

At one point I started showing my good refining results with the statement “apparently dancing nord before refining is the trick” I had hoped there would be a bunch if people dancing at craft stations but sadly it never took off.

The superstition was that if you did the pinions right it would increase your chance to get a general. The first part was to save the pinions till the end. The next step varied wildly. Some wanted all four pinions clicked at the same time. Some said clockwise some said counter clockwise. Some said they had to be clicked at the end in the same order they came up.

None of it made a bit of a difference, but the people who believed it were adamant about it’s validity. And god help you if you did actually get a general, because the see I told you so’s we’re going to be flying

How about the rumor that Sorc were, are and will always be OP in all elements of the game all the time and have never had a Nerf ever.

In fact that even if they removed them from the game they would still be Op.

The chances of getting stones and tempers are higher when you refine large quantities at once, instead of refining small stacks as soon as you can.

The game moons used to control when spawns occur, do people really think the real-life moon affects spawns??? (I have no appropriate reaction gif for this)

I believe that, in the beginning, the moon phases did work that way. That was also the time people would camp the spawn points during that time and kill everything so players would have to pay for bites. Somewhere along the way the moon phase thing got changed.

There is some truth to this in the way I refine. I treat it like card counting. Even Stevens is some where around 1/200. Laws of probability say that you are equally likely to have a hot streak as you are a cold streak. But on a Long enough time line you will always come back to even Stevens.

So I categorize by priority. Tempers are high, wax is take it or leave it, and rosin is low. So I start with wax. If I do better than 1/200 then the deck is cold and I’ll probably pay back losses. I’d rather pay back those losses with wood so I’ll refine wood and hope my results are less than 1/200 making the deck hot again so I can win on tempers. If wax came back lower than 1/200 it would be a hot deck and I’d go straight to ore.

With this “theory” the more you refine at once gives you a larger sample size, and a better picture of how hot or cold the deck is. So I don’t even bother refining till I have at least 1000 of everything.

    1) Sanguine's black goat's eyes only glow when werewolf and vampire's can infect players.

    2) when you are farming for a certain item, and instead get every other possible drop, that proves there is a weighted loot table rather than rng.

This is my biggest pet peeve when it comes to misinformation. And new players tend not to believe the one person telling them the truth when you have multiple others spreading the moon phase *** in zone. Hell there are players on the forums that still believe this.

I didn't even need or want ww just took these for proof.

Don't get me wrong, ww can happen on a full moon and vamp can happen on a new moon. But the moon phase has nothing to do with their spawning cycle.

I think it was something like every three days based on in game moon phases. Sometime around launch on PC someone posted a pic of players standing at some stairs that dipped into the water. When the "tide" was at a certain step, it meant the spawns were up. I have no idea how true any of that was.

I still believe this. The first few refines almost always come up empty. Pretty sure the rng has some type of warm up mechanism.
