Question about Resistances

I know the resistance cap is 32k-ish, so let's say I have 32k resistance and someone has 5k penetration, they ignore resistance and hit me as if I have 27k resistance. I'm pretty sure that's the case.
BUT if I have 40k resistance(well over the cap), and they have 5k penetration and hit me... are they hitting me as if I have 35k resistance... or since the cap is 32, are they still hitting me as if I have 27k?
Did I word that properly? A friend and I are having differing opinions on the topic and I wanted to ask the forums to see if there was a consensus. Thanks in advance!

✭✭✭If you have 40k resistance and them 5k penetration then they hit you as if you had 35k resistance, which since its over the cap counts as 33,100k which is 50% mitigation.0 -

Correct.
Overcapping resists only helps in PVPLord and Savior of the Association of Serious S***posters.
