I feel like a second-rate citizen of Tamriel, because I don't sport any of the very fancy store-bought fluff virtually e v e r y b o d y in the game is having. Glowing mounts, special pets, ridiculous skins... you name it, people are full of this ***. I can't remember the last time I saw a guy riding a regular chestnut steed like mine. There is always something shiney, something flashy. Regular guys simply became extinct.

So... does my habit of just paying for actual playable content make me a freeloader? I buy all the DLCs and I play them, but I never buy anything else from the store. To be perfectly honest, a lot of the stuff that's in there is quite annoying, it's making the game look like an amusement park, which is what I really hated about other popular MMOs.

If they removed the store entirely and just sold actual DLCs and Chapters, would that keep the game running or is the ridiculous and annoying fluff really necessary to make it profitable?

Honestly if you actually spend time thinking about who can afford what in a video game, I suggest you unplug and reassess life in general.

I had a friend back in High School who almost went into a homicidal rage whenever a student drove by in a nicer car than he had, his life went down a very dark path with a sad ending.

It's just pixels people with disposable income uses as a way to further support the game, you actually do benefit because a profitable game is a game that sticks around.

Maybe, but only the weak care if they are judged, no offence.

As said in previous post, play the game how you want and let others play how they want.

    I REALLY don't care.

Would that elk mount be cool to have? Yes.

Am I going to spend the equivalent of $30+ just to have it? No.

Some of the really over-done ones slightly bother me,
but it has never been particularly bad

made peace some time ago with the idea that Tamriel is filled with a bunch of adventurers with their own idiosyncrasies
a lot of it is a bit higher fantasy than most of the Elder Scrolls series has been
but Elder Scrolls as a series has always leaned a good deal into high fantasy

that said, got myself a Dire Pony and named her Sunshine,
and got the Stag mount due to not being around for the previous one
and having an appreciation for Warhammer
so my Dark Brotherhood Wood Elf characters use it,
while most of my other characters use the Alliance horse for the better armour than Stamina training
tho two use the Tiger Senche because it was a nice freebie and on a max-height Altmer it is actually pretty large

basically tho, combination of Shadowmere and Wild Riders for DB Bosmer

    de44f2626477473.jpg

but it takes all types to make up Tamriel,
so genuinely appreciate your efforts to be less flashy <3

I got ESO+, primarily for the crafting bag, so I get 1.5k free crowns per month. I saved the first of those for functional stuff like the banker and merchant, then some for character slots and other utility.

Once I had 10k crowns sitting in my account and nothing really useful functional to get, I figured, why not get some cosmetic stuff to complement the aesthetic looks of a character (e.g. the new molten-earth skin goes very well with my dunmer in Mazzatun style chest piece on a black horse with glowing eyes and hooves ;) ).

But that's just cosmetics, and a way of making individual looks. For the longest time, my chars would ride the brown standard horse, and later the imperial one after I bought the imperial edition upgrade (for my DK tank).

This thread also highlights a very real problem that I have been discussing with the mods and Devs for months.

Shaming for buying crown crates and spending extra on items the company provides, I have had friends literally bullied out of the game and followed into the real world for the high crime of riding a APEX mount. The way it is currently being handled is ignoring the issue, I hope that enough people will actually speak to the Mods and Devs so they will have to listen.

You think that the channels you use to support the game have no effect on the game and the policies that drive it?

I've lost count of the recent articles and videos that discuss issues there have been about microtransactions and loot-boxes.

Matt Firor, when defending ESO's initial reliance on subscription said:
"Charging a flat monthly (or subscription) fee means that we will offer players the game we set out to make, and the one that fans want to play. Going with any other model meant that we would have to make sacrifices and changes we weren't willing to make."

Now, we not only have B2P but Crown Crates as well. Do you honestly believe that no sacrifices have been made? Microtransactions are now changing the structure (and timing) of the delivery of content in the games industry as a whole, and you think that blowing some crowns on them here is having no effect on development priorities and resources?

But you're right, you shouldn't be the target of anger. Nobody should be.

I am not angry at these people. I pity the people who are giving ZOS every incentive to cheapen their vision day after day while convincing themselves that they are helping it grow.

I subbed for 9 months, then because of ZOS decisions, I decided quit monthly support and only spend crowns

So far I have spend these:

    Earthtear cavern
    2 character slots
    all dlc
    imperial edition
    morrowind
    and another vanilla eso account
    Wedding suit/dress
    Grim motif

And that's probably all I will spend....this^ and furture dlc, exclusive motif and chapters

I will be far far away from all that crown mounts and *** :)

Do you still sub for ESO+ and use crowns on items since DLC access is 'included'?
Or do you play for 'free' now and only buy the DLC packs?

Personally still sub, and still would have preferred the game never going b2p
    but it is now,
and their 'vision' was cheapened early on
if it was not the intention to just prop up an effective beta with subscription fees
    before releasing the finalized game

Still remember when they told us that an effective 'Hair Salon' was going to be in game
where players could restyle each-other's hair
but do not personally object to them making more models and items in game
and charging one month of Crown subscription to get the hair and makeup packs
rather than setting up and implementing some sort of pseudo-crafting skill line

where the problem gets really bad is the endless retextures of the same handful of mounts being plugged into Crown Crates
but once *** starts rolling down hill, it just accumulates further
there is not going to be a point where it turns back around
the model has been so successful that it has been implemented in Fallout 4 and Skyrim now

The issue is, Crown store stuff is easy and consistent income
whereas DLC is sporadic and unreliable
and game development in general has become a bloated beast of massive budgets spent on minimal content

You can earn fancy skins, costumes and pets in game. No need to pay money there. Mounts are a exception though. Im happy with how realistic (or not) the crownstore stuff is, as long as they don't introduce laserweapons and spaceships like some other games do.

p.s. the imperial horse is still the best mount, nothing beats a simple white horse.

The concept of "enough profit" isn't really a thing in the business world. There is no "enough". Can we get more? Ok good let's do that then, more is better.

It's not a question of the game tanking if they didn't do the crown store. It's a question of can end-of-year bonuses be bigger if they DO the crown store.

To answer your other question: no, you are not a freeloader. If you don't want to buy their cosmetic stuff, why should you? Ride that chestnut horse with pride. ZOS' ability to keep their game running and in good repair is not your worry.

Edited for an impressive number of typos. I blame the cold medicine.
