I was using it but it has some issues.
One. you really want to have the Sun bonus always online, which means either you lose a monster helm or you dual wield.
So you can lose Grothdar for Slimeclaw or ice heart crit bonus.

The biggeset problem is that you have really high Spell damage.. 4500 or so...but very little crit (30%). So you are losing that huge dps boost from having high crit chance.

So running Juli + BSW + iceheart shoulders gives you less spell damage 3000 ish but you have 60% crit chance which gives you such a boost in dps. So a little less spell damage a lot more crit!. Since monster helms don't crit this set up is fine losing the helmet.

The other option is Sun, Grothdar, 3 moondancer, maelstrom. Which is also strong just on spell damage but again lacks crit.

My magDK crafter runs this set combo and I have no problem going anywhere to collect mats and craft. I even completed the Vvardenfell main quest, kicking the crap out of that stupid dog with little effort. (note, my magDK is a Khajiit and is at 630cp, so that does help to increase crit% and damage a bit.) Still, it's a nice set up for general PvE questing, etc. Not sure how well this would work in PvP since everyone runs at least 3 impenetrable armor pieces there.

Khajiit increases weapon crit, not spell crit.

Where are you getting these numbers from? Taking Julianos over Sun isn't going to increase your crit by 30%.

It's good damage but For pvp go shackle breaker and bsw or Sun. Need that extra Stam and recovery.

Yeah I still think I'm going with that after seeing that video of you mag dk. What pieces do you have sun or BSW definitely jewelry but what else weapons,boots?

Shackle + Sun is easy/cheap to get and very effective.

When I run this build, I run:
Shacklebreaker: 1 heavy (chest) 1 medium (legs), 1 light, S&B both bars
Sun: 3 jewelry + 2 light armor
Skoria: 2 light pieces

5 light 1 heavy 1 medium. Id go Sun on jewlery and sword and board. that way of you ever wanna go resto staff on your back bar you won't have to lose the stamina and Magicka you just would lose the fire damage and you dont need it on a mistform healing bar.

i'm using 5pc silks of the sun, 2pc grothdar, 4 pc night mother's sorrow (5pc on DW)...5 light/2 heavy...

night mother's sorrow and flames of oblivion help keep my crit rating around 60% and able to use the apprentice mundus instead of the thief...

If it's PvE BSW is better. You can pair it with 5 IA front bar inferno and 1p Kena or Slimercraw/Iceheart and infused or charged vMA lightning backbar. BSW + Sun will leave your crit too low.

I have done some testing my self and found Juli + BSW was the best. I haven't extensively tested Sun + BSW my self, though I have spoken about it with a friend who plays a lot more mag DK then I do and in his opinion Suns lack of crit makes it weaker then Juli.

Sorry I think it was 36% crit. I never tried slimeclaw/iceheart with my Sun set up so I can't recall what it would be.
I am approximating from my stats that I had off the top of my head.

As for Juli and Sun. Well you lose the crit bonus from BSW, which as noted, Crit is a big part of your PVE damage. Secondly the sun spell damage boost is less than BSW, now BSW can only get 70-60% uptime so they are closer than they appear but BSW applies to everything and applies burning.

Now Sun is much stronger in PVP where everyone has Impen and it is difficult to proc the BSW realiably.
So a good set up for a PVP MagDK is Heavy inpen Juli+ Sun+ Vulkan Skoria. Sword and board front and Inferno staff backbar. Witchmothers.

By default you have 10% spell critical
Spell Precision passive from the Apprentice CP constellation adds 12%
Major Prophecy (slotting Inner Light, Flames or Oblivion or drinking a spell power potion) gives you 2191=10% spell critical
Minor Prophecy (can be only gained if a sorcerer in your group uses Dark Magic skills) gives you 657=3% spell critical
Prodigy Light Armor passive (requires 5p equipped) gives you 2191=10% spell critical
Precise 1H and 2H weapons give 3.5% and 7% spell and weapon critical respectively
1-4p set piece Spell and Weapon Critical bonuses are by default 833=3.8%
5p Mother's Sorrow set piece bonus is 1924=8.8%

For example a magicka DK wearing 5 Julianos 5 BSW 1 Iceheart 5L/1M/1H with an infused staff and slotting Flames of Oblivion, with at least 30 CP in the Apprentice will have a critical rating of 10%+12%+10%+10%+4*3.8%=57.2%. If a sorcerer in your group throws Crystal Fragments every 20s that will be increased to 60.2%. Having at least 50% critical rating is recommended in PvE since NPCs don't have critical resistance, and there are various bonuses to critical damage.

By default your critical damage is 50% skill tool tip damage, so when you score a critical hit you will do 50% more damage
Putting points in Elf Born gives you up to 25% to your critical damage (realistically you will put about 56 for a 20% bonus)
Minor Force gives you 10% bonus to your critical damage - gained by Having Rearming Trap active, being linked to someone by Stalwart Guard or activating a synergy from someone using Twilight Remedy Set)
Major Force gives you 30% bonus to your critical damage - only gained from Aggressive Warhorn skill for 9.5s, almost impossible to get full up time on this even in a well coordinated group with 4 warhorns.
Shadow mundus gives you 9% (13.7% with 7p divines) to your critical hit but it's not efficient to use it following the HotR changes - it used to give 11%.

So theoretically your critical multiplier can be as high as 1+50%+25%+10%+15%=2.10. Realistically that needs to be toned down a bit. A realistic value with 56 CP in elfborn 80% minor force and 60% major force up times is
1+50%+20%+10%*80%+15%*60% = which is achievable in a group. That means you will do 1.87x tool tip damage when you score a critical strike. Even when playing solo and not using trap your critical multiplier is still 1.7 from Elfborn CP alone. So your damage will scale quite strongly with your critical.

Bsw and sun hits very hard, but be prepared to manage your magicka wisely. I take it you would be using dw/ destro back bar? Or are you going to sack a monster set?

two or three putches ago i used BSW5+Sun5+Grothdarr2 (dw/destro) Good dmg but awfull sustain. I have not stil respec that char since furniture patch.

I'm currently use 5 Sun, 5 Julianos and 1 Iceheart (head). I use the 5-1-1 setup and have Apprentice Mundus and it does me pretty well. Using Flame staff on front bar and Shock on back.

Resource management in general is pretty poor for DK's (since a few patches back) but i can get by ok and deal enough damage to last in most Vet content.

I also use a 5 BSW, 4 Julianos, 2 Skoria with a 5-2 setup form time to time. The problem with this setup is i'm using 2 heavy Skoria (though once i drop on a light piece i'll be changing to heavy chest).

Like most i'm using divines on everything because it works. Though i see a few comments on other threads saying people need to stop using divines because there are better options but they never elaborate. If anyone can clarify this it would be appreciated.

Still a viable set and easy enough to get in the first instance and help towards BiS grinds.

I run it without precise. I run Infused Flame staff with Fire Damage enchant on from bar and Infused Shock staff with Spell Damage enchant on back bar. I dont have any issues and can pull decent enough numbers.

In all honesty sets like this are a godsend imo, otherwise you're stuck in the vMA situation:
