out of curiosity: blocking in ESO

if we were never supposed to perma block (but always find a way to do so) why was blocking in ESO not just designed that way?

you press block, it takes priority over current inputs (as now) you cannot do anything but it plays a block animation then settles back to standard animation and you can resume fighting, or block again.

that is to say, its more like a skill rather then a passive effect, one you activate, lasts for a few seconds, then ends instead of being able to hold it. there is also a delay where you cannot use it again RIGHT away. (like one second)

if the duration of a block like this matched the wind up time of heavy / charged attacks from bosses / monsters then it would be perfect. as you would see the charge or wind up coming, block, both animations would play out (you blocking the attack) then go from there.

this is currently how Bethesda is leaning on approaching its newer games (fallout 4 works that way but I cannot recall skyrim atm)

by the way I'm not saying this is better as anything that removes or nerfs perma blocking is a nerf to blocking. I'm jus curious why it was not this way from the start.

so much stuff in this game has been nerfed because of blocking instead of changing how it works:
-sets
-stam regen
-block cost
-abilities that give back stam (remember redguard? remember DK passives? constitution? etc.)

so much good stuff has been ruined or nerfed because it indirectly helped perma blocking. I would much rather see blocking redesigned to work as it was supposed to and have the viability of races / skills / passives / abilities back

just a curiosity. . .

you can still perma block btw :P

ESO player since beta.
previously full time subscriber, beta-2024, game got too disappointing.

If we are talking about PVP which I assume you are.. Who cares if the tank holds down block forever in PVE(Boring IMO and I do not do it, but who cares).

I do not think there is a stated mandate from ESO that they are against Perma blocking. I have seen many players complain from the PVP perspective of players that perma block.

I do remember ESO making a statement that they wanted to make blocking more of a dynamic action instead of a static action. I believe this change was to make tanking a bit more challenging in dungeons and other PVE content. This change also made it more difficult for PVP players to just hold down block.

I for one like that I can block at any time. If I am tanking a dungeon and I start to perform an action and realize I am about to get crushed by the boss the game currently allows me to start blocking right away as soon as I pull the trigger. This for me is a positive.

I would not like to see the block animation cancel be changed as it would be much harder to dynamically block PVE content and players

I agree that you can still perma block. I see it all the time in PVP. However since making the changes to stam and Mag regen while blocking the players have to dedicate a lot of spec to making it so they can hold block down for long periods of time. The nice part about PVP perma blockers is you can just ignore them until they are resurrecting someone.
