Question about trespassing

When I unlock the door and enter the house hidden, if NPCs are near, they make comments and threaten me about the consequences if I don't leave the house immediately.

Was it always like that? Because I still remain hidden and the cursor still shows half-closed eye. So how is at all possible to trespass when NPCs are in the house and have the 6th sense and eyes on the back?

If you break into an NPC house with NPCs inside you'll be detected regardless. I mean most of these houses are just a single room so from a logical standpoint I doubt an NPC would just be sitting there, hear the lock being picked, see their door open and close on it's own and not see anyone come in.

Right! ^ Makes sense, I was just suspicious about the "eye" cursor still remaining half-closed.

Yeah, the NPCs will always make comments, but if the area isn't actually marked as trespassing (red icon where the bounty indicator is) you can stay there for tea and crumpets, if you please. Only when you get caught pickpocketing, stealing or stabbing will you get a bounty.

Usually, you will remain undetected unless you get get in their POV.

Yeah it was marked, I broke the lock to enter... but what ArchMikem said makes sense even from the logical point of view. They heard the lock and the doors.

I've always thought NPC conversations are started whenever a player gets within a certain distance of the NPC and whether you are in stealth or not doesn't matter for the conversation. Sneaking around you can still get the cry me a river and float away conversation for example.

In a home the NPC may announce that they see you or that you should leave but if the eye says you are hidden usually you can go about your crimes as normal.
and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."

It's odd, but most locked houses aren't marked as "restricted areas", at least in the vanilla game. In non-restricted "trespassing" areas npcs will never give you a bounty for simply noticing you, or even if you hang out in their home for a little while, uninvited.

However ZoS seems to be rectifying this oversight, as more and more locked npc houses are being marked as "restricted", and if you are caught by the inhabitants it will incur a bounty of a couple hundred gold or so.
