Throughout this post I am going to highlight multiple key reasons as to why Magicka Detonation to its Pre-(Dark Brotherhood??) stage. Overall I will cover how it will promote greater build diversity, bring back more magicka based skilled pvp, as well as revitalize some of the near extinct play styles we used to know and love. I propose the change is simply reverted, with damage adjusted proportionately to how damage is performing now.
Promoting Build Diversity
As it stands right now, most of the magicka classes are played a distinct way with very little diversity amongst themselves. Take Magicka Sorceror for example, in Cyrodiil relatively all Sorcs play a destro resto setup (a point i will address later on) with a "keep your distance" plays tyle. The reintroduction of magicka detonation spices things up, you can choose to remain the keep your distance play style and elect to take the inevitable detonation morph, or an up in your face playstyle by electing to take the proximity detonation morph. A gear will shift like this amongst all magicka classes as the ability can allow more classes to play the keep your distance or up in your face effectively by adding burst potential to all classes and play styles.
Bringing Back More Magicka Based Skilled PvP
In the current state of the game (Morrowind) proc set meta is king...instantaneous damage that requires virtually no skill whatsoever to execute. In the old Magicka Detonation days the play was much different, in order to kill your opponents you had to
time your damage along with magicka detonation to create burst. Players would cast their magicka det and count down the time before it went off, waiting until the precise moment to let out their damage from other abilities. In Cyrodiil rn we see little to no timing of burst for kills, only in select play styles like bomblades or in the new warden class.
Reviving the Near Extinct Play Styles
We all know what the nerf did to DW Mag Sorcs and Magblades. If you dont know go take a look in cyrodiil and see how many there are vs how many there used to be. Not including bomblades, DW mag sorcs and magblades are
severely outnumbered by their destro staff counterparts, and it has been like this since the nerf. The reasons for this are many, but the biggest is lack of pressure/burst. A DW mag sorc has to spam weak no damage dealing abilities like entropy to proc their frag, and try to line that up with their curse to deal their burst. Magblades are forced to rely on Cripple and an underwhelming spammable in Concealed Weapon to take people out, all at the same time having to play an in your face play style on arguably the squishiest class in the game. Such things have pushed people away from using DW altogether on either class and it is easily noticeable that these once prevalent play styles are nearly gone completely.
These are just some key points as to why i believe the ability just be glorified again, i appreciate any criticism and or agreements in the comments below.
