[Maintenance Shenanigans] Morrowind Launch is Nearly Here!

Console servers are now offline and we're merely hours away from Morrowind's launch! In the meantime, let's all get to know each other a bit better. Let's start with an easy & relevant one - what's your favorite TES memory?

My first was when Oblivion launched. It was what convinced me to purchase an Xbox 360, and I remember camping outside of Costco during a very cold night to try and get a system (this was before you could just order one online and have it easily shipped - kids these days, so spoiled!). Once the sun rose, someone's mom stopped by with warm McDonald's breakfast for everyone in line. :) Camping out for a console really bonded strangers together in such a cool, nerdy way.

My other memory was when I was doing merchandising at CompUSA (RIP) and picked up an original Morrowind box. I remember seeing the Bethesda logo and wondering if it was named after the city in Maryland. Sure enough, they were based just a few miles from where I lived at the time, and I thought to myself how it'd be awesome to work there one day. It became my goal in life. Isn't it funny how things work out.

Ok ok, so these aren't exactly in-game memories. I cheated. :P

Hey, @ZOS_GinaBruno , not to derail the thread, but is this the official server downtime hangout thread? Because, right now, there are 20 different maintenance threads up, and I'm trying to help you mods consolidate them by linking to my thread in all of them.

If it turns out this is the official thread, I will happily order my thread closed and order my scribe to direct all discussion to this thread while I sleep.

Thanks, Ms. Bruno. Lord Arena25 out!

    Signed,

    Hmmm... favourite...?

The one that stands out for me was while playing Oblivion late one night at the opposite end of the house to my husband.
Oblivion caves were unlit, for the most part, so you always needed a ring or spell that provided either nightvision or a light.
Anyway, I was in a cave, exploring, probably without a light... turned my character around and screamed because there was a zombie right behind - which I hadn't heard because my then-young children were asleep so the sound was low
    .
My husband said that he thought it was someone on the main road... xD

Too easy: All of them. Next question!

Hrmm, let's see. There was that one time where I was fooling around with spell creation in Morrowind and I increased a spell's radius to as bubbly as it could go and I launched it at the ground in front of me. I thought the shock wave effected looked pretty cool and launched a few more. Then I went into an adjacent shop and discovered the bodies of the guard and the shop keep lying on the floor. I knew then I had become too powerful for all mortals to contain and saved myself from absolute corruption by loading my last save.

Skyrim was the first TES game that I played, and I went in absolutely blind to TES universe.

After making my first ever character, an Argonian, I immediately fell in love while escaping the dragon at the beginning of the game. When I exited the tutorial cave for the first time, I was amazed at the freedom of exploration. After exploring the mountains and plains, I came across a giant and ran over to talk to him, only to find that he wasn't so friendly. He chased me into a nearby cave where I thought I was safe. Instead, a vampire started attacking me and quickly ran back out of the cave.

I explored, for the next few days, without knowing that while in the cave I had been infected and turned into a vampire. Eventually, every NPC in the game started attacking me (pre-Dawnguard, so stage 4 vamps were automatically attacked) and I had an entire world out to get me, without a clue of how to progress in the game.

It was easily the most fun I've ever had in the first couple hours of a game.

Is it also possible to pick a single maintenance hangout thread and close all the others? We have 20 maintenance threads up, including this one, as well as my own, and I would really appreciate mods choosing one and closing all the others.

There was one moment though when I was watching my younger brother play Morrowind.

He drank a potion, was wearing a ton of armor, some sort of special boots, and started leaping from one side of the map to the other in single bounds.

Watch out, everyone, it's the Forum Police. Post 'em if ya got 'em!

Edit: Also, wait. Is your maintenance thread the one where you post the first four to five posts before someone comes in to say how lonely it is in there. That's gawd darned adorable! Shucks!

Ahhh.. I remember the days gone past when my Wrecking Blows were hitting in the 30ks. Now, I'm lucky to see it in the 20ks. What the h, man?! Oh crap, did I just trolled this thread? I've never trolled before or meant to. I don't really know what that is. I do apologize if this is seemingly what a trolling is. I'm not a troller. Just un-nerf whatever damn nerfing crap you guys have done to stam toons!! Use some of this maintenance downtime for that too, would you??

I had never played an RPG of any sort prior to Oblivion. I remember being completely awed by the game world and the freedom i felt to go anywhere, do anything.

Unfortunately, this freedom meant I accidentally ended up killing a random innocent through my own screw up. I was horrified and felt terrible. Later, as I took a nap at the local end, a dark cloaked figure visited me and gave me an invitation to his order. All I could think was, "THIS GAME IS AWESOME."

Yes! After that frost troll killed me the first 3 times, I conjured a flame atronach as a distraction and ran past without ever looking back. It's probably still up there patrolling that mountain pass.

The Falling Wizard in Morrowind is definitely a memorable one for me.

After strolling around taking in the sights and sounds of ES3 and then hearing that scream and finding the body...

I laughed so hard I nearly peed myself.

When I was playing Skyrim (original, not SE) on PC and my brother was over and came in to see what I was doing. I had just started and was just entering Whiterun to report about the Dragon when I burst into a fanboy geek moment about the stream running out of the city and it crossed the road to the front gates. I spent a good several minutes talking and just staring at how beautiful the running water looked for a game of that age. It had nothing to do with the story or the universe. Just a simple man, gushing over a simple stream and how pretty it was.

    But honestly I think the most impacting moment I had, and I'm CERTAIN this was for many others, was the very first time you were stopped by the Courier while traveling down the road on your horse to your next destination, waving him goodbye, then opening your inventory to see what the letter was. You flip the paper open, feeling dandy and normal, but then you see this;

Yeah that was awesome. Just got off the boat and heading for Balmora and splat. I remember thinking what was that about. I read the journal and picked up the scrolls. I knew I shouldn't but couldn't help myself. I used the scroll and jumped.

Balmora, in TES III for the first time. I had a pervasive feeling of "I have *no* idea what is going on... and I love that."

It didn't feel like another Medieval fantasy copy. It felt... alien. That was awesome.

One time in Cyrodil, I got into a one on one battle that started on the outskirts of a zerg. The duel waxed and waned, meandering over the terrain far away from whence it came. Eventually, I triumphed. And despite the utmost respect I had for my skilled opponent, I celebrated with an act more dubious than the baggiest of teabags: the guy died on a rubedite node so I immediately mined that $&!+ right over his dead body.

Walking down a road in the middle of the night in Vvardenfell and coming across an Ogrim companion sitting in the road. To this day Im convinced the modder was a Pokemon fan. Took that Ogrim and a harem of female followers on some Manson Family level shenanigans across Vvardenfell. Entering a different house in every town at night time, killing the owner and then claiming the place for myself.

When my older sister was in the military (this was early 2000's, she was in the military since the 90's) she picked up TES III: Morrowind, and it was one of the only games she played when she was deployed to Iraq. When she would come home on leave I would always ask to watch her play on her highly-progressed character, being amazed all the same. I was young back then, and couldn't quite comprehend the storyline very well, but it was fun all the same.

Because of that memory I have absolutely no regrets on Pre-ordering the Collector's Edition of this game's rendition of TES III: Morrowind.
