Need to do the killing blow with the weapon equipped.
Also equipping a single one handed sword will NOT unlock anything. You need both hands equipped to unlock a skill line (either a one handed weapon + shield for one hand + shied or 2 one handed for dual wield).

I have done killing blow with my weapon. I have NO abilities listed at all. I'm level 5 with Flame staff, level 6 with light and Heavy armor. I've unlocked all my crafting, started lock picking..... But when I press the K key the window is totally blank.

Disable all addons too, they might conflict with the new skill lines. These do show up.
I don't understand this new system or who asked for it.
Really does not help with character planning. Nor leveling armors in equal progression.
ZOS: So what do you think of this idea we have to "simplify" the new character experience?
PTS testers: God no. This is not a good idea.
ZOS: Great, we'll roll that right out then!

I create a character. I open a window to a website that lists all the skills in ESO. I open another window to the ESO Forum Patch Notes that explain what I have to do to unlock skill lines that haven't appeared yet. Then I run around unlocking skill lines that I think I might want at some point in the future.
While I genuinely like this game, this decision just seems foodhardy and poorly thought out. And, what is more troubling, is player feedback doesn't really seem to mean anything to Zenimax.
All skill-lines will eventually show up in your character sheet after reading lorebook increasing that particular skill as well. No need for killing blow or even equipping.

Are you sure? Maybe they changed that from when I was testing in the beta, because I gained skill levels in things like light armor without it being unlocked (I had two pieces on, not 3 and I leveled and the exp pushed light armor to lvl 2)

No one asked for it, beta feedback was prominently against it from both NPE and veteran views.I don't understand this new system or who asked for it.
