Can we please get an interface option for "I'm not a noob who needs their skill lines locked behind obnoxious wear/wield/kill requirements, and I promise I won't cry over how I spend my skill points."

Thank you for your consideration.

The problem I'm having is that no matter what I do my skills aren't showing up. I'm running around killing mobs with Light attacks because I cant see anything to allocate points into....

I don't understand this new system or who asked for it.

Really does not help with character planning. Nor leveling armors in equal progression.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Need to do the killing blow with the weapon equipped.

Also equipping a single one handed sword will NOT unlock anything. You need both hands equipped to unlock a skill line (either a one handed weapon + shield for one hand + shied or 2 one handed for dual wield).

I have done killing blow with my weapon. I have NO abilities listed at all. I'm level 5 with Flame staff, level 6 with light and Heavy armor. I've unlocked all my crafting, started lock picking..... But when I press the K key the window is totally blank.

Disable all addons too, they might conflict with the new skill lines. These do show up.

All skill-lines will eventually show up in your character sheet after reading lorebook increasing that particular skill as well. No need for killing blow or even equipping.

As stated in Patch Notes - you need to level your character up to level 5 first.

What I would like is if they showed all skill lines by default, but had an overlay over the ones that are locked behind a quest, telling you what you need to do in order to unlock said skill lines.

@Phage character level 5 is when it appears.

To the OP, I do not think we would be able to spend skill points into areas we cannot see now, even if we could. The only difference is we need to have a kill with a weapon for the line to show vs just getting xp. iirc. I could be wrong. I have been before.

Yeah this new system is horrid, in-fact i would go as so far to say this makes the problem they tried to fix even worse. As a new player might dump all there points into only 1 or 2 trees then realizes he has nothing left for crafting etc.

If he had all these skill trees for him ahead of time he can plan, if he/she screws up, they only have themselves to blame. But with like 90% of the skill trees hidden it will be a lot easier to make mistakes and waste skill points. This system is over all worse and less noob friendly. I guess they weren't selling enough reset skill scrolls. :smirk:

But i do appreciate the slap in the face zos as you lie to our faces. While trying to hide it and make it seem like this change was more helpful than bad.

Besides morrowind this whole patch screwed the game up in a multitude of ways with features that worsen the game rather than help it. That's not even counting the balance changes either. However i do have a shred of hope next patch will be better, i mean they can only go up right? Right guys?!?!? Oh dear god... :worried:

Yeah. I found myself equipping stuff just to get the skill line, then discarding it.

@ZOS_GinaBruno ... pass along to the development team that they can reverse this, and I won't complain at all!

ZOS: So what do you think of this idea we have to "simplify" the new character experience?

PTS testers: God no. This is not a good idea.

ZOS: Great, we'll roll that right out then!

Then why have a public test server if they're just going to ignore the feedback they get?? I'm not incensed about this but, as a relatively new player (less than six months) do you want to know what I do now?

I create a character. I open a window to a website that lists all the skills in ESO. I open another window to the ESO Forum Patch Notes that explain what I have to do to unlock skill lines that haven't appeared yet. Then I run around unlocking skill lines that I think I might want at some point in the future.

It's not easier. I doubt they claim it's easier. And it doesn't prevent new players from making mistakes. Instead, it might actually cause more mistakes (in a "Hey, I never thought of that" way) as well as prevent new players from experimenting with skill combinations they would not have thought of otherwise. Any good teacher knows that the elimination of choice decreases learning. The greater the choice of possible outcomes, the larger the learning environment.

Another thing it does is prevents players from seeing how many skill points they need - in game - to complete their character. Now they will have toggle out of the game and using a third-party website to do this.

While I genuinely like this game, this decision just seems foodhardy and poorly thought out. And, what is more troubling, is player feedback doesn't really seem to mean anything to Zenimax.

    @ZOS_GinaBruno, @ZOS_JessicaFolsom, @ZOS_RichLambert.

Quoted for actual experience from a new player. That is what we on the PTS thought as well. ZOS just increased the learning curve in a game that already does a poor job of explaining how to play to new players.

For those of you that don't participate on the PTS, I have no way to explain to you the frustration and hopelessness we feel every patch cycle when we do our due diligence to point out issues, provide evidence and insightful posts, get upvoted and tons of agrees, only to have ZOS completely ignore us due to either Myopic community support or internal politics.

There is NO AMOUNT of well written evidenced threads, community outcry, or clear community desire that can keep ZOS from even an obviously terrible decision.

Here's another example. This occurred nearly a month before the homestead released. over 100 likes and no response from ZOS
I'm beginning to think the PTS really isn't about feedback. Its more about marketing and market research.

Are you sure? Maybe they changed that from when I was testing in the beta, because I gained skill levels in things like light armor without it being unlocked (I had two pieces on, not 3 and I leveled and the exp pushed light armor to lvl 2)

This is accurate. Last night, while wearing one piece of heavy armor (not enough to unlock the skill line), I was able to raise heavy armor to 5. I know this because the skill increase messages appeared on the screen.

No one asked for it, beta feedback was prominently against it from both NPE and veteran views.

ZOS went ahead with this one any way.
