After being away for a while...

This might seem like a stupid question but I'm just wondering.

So, I've been away from this game for a little while (played off and on randomly the past couple years) and I've noticed something. I just recently started playing more and most of the time I'll be rambling down a dungeon with my level 39 mixed Templar build, minding my own business, slowly killing a group of 3-4 bandit dudes at a time, when all of a sudden a vet level 200+ player comes flying out of nowhere spamming AOE attacks like crazy and kills every enemy in front of me including the boss in seconds. I know that One Tamriel came out a while ago and that enemies scale to your level, but how can other players (I know, high vet/champion level but still) kill enemies that quickly? Am I doing something wrong?

I just wanted to know before I got to 50 in case I had to change how I made my build. (If I suck now then I would rather act sooner than later.

1T made overland extremely easy IMO. The scaling is very poor.
    -Immortal Redeemer-
    -Extinguisher of Flames-
    -Gryphon Heart-
    -Potato-

If I edited a post, it was for spelling. It is always because of spelling....

Overland has been easy before. In fact before it was worse because while it still takes a maxed out toon 5 seconds tops to kill an "elite" openworld mob, before One Tam it'd literally take them 1 light attack as poor level 10-50 mobs were just not made for this.

OP, it's a combination of quite a few things, cp, gear sets, rotation(thogh not much is needed for overland mobs but still), skills such as Destro ulti unlocked etc. They're also probabloy pure dps specs whereas it sounds like you are not. It's easy enough to change things around, you can respec all your attributes and skillpoints at any time if you wish, get new gear, food, and voila.

For what it's worth, I was pretty much one shotting all open world stuff on my level 46 alt with 0 cp whatsoever as well. I did have decent crafted gear and right skills etc though. If you're after the same, we can advice you with gear sets/skills/attribute allocation etc, if not, just go on your way enjoying the journey, you can pretty much do whatever unless you're into veteran (group) content.

I'm kind of a weird mix between magica, health, and stamina, while mostly stamina. I tried to be an all around build because I'm mostly solo at the moment, so I tried to be sustainable while also trying to cause as much damage as I could. I guess I'm more DPS but not purely. I've also been using physical weapons instead of staves so that might be while I feel a little underpowered too.

I'm using a crafted set of Ashen Grip and have all 5 pieces but it still doesn't seem like enough. I'm trying to work towards the Night Mother's Gaze at the moment to see if that helps.

Until you hit CP160, it's unlikely that you'll be optimizing/upgrading your gear to a reasonable fraction of what you're capable of. Mixing and matching set bonuses, along with upgrading your weapons to gold is a pretty big deal, especially for DPS.

Your time until then is probably better spent leveling skills/testing skill combinations rather than worrying about gear you're going to be refreshing often. Once you hit CP160 and have a better idea of how to play your character in the way that's most fun for you, you can look into the many set bonuses that will enhance effectiveness with that build.

That's my advice for friends anyway :)
Something being unbalanced in 1v1 does not imply that it is balanced in group play.

Mmm well there's your issue. With no softcaps limiting our strength it's really most effective to stack verything into one stat, get just enough health to avoid getting one shot and kill everything before it kills you - which it sounds like the person/people you ran into did. Splitting your resources is generally very ineffective unless you're a tank - but then as a tank you're about survival and utility, not doing damage. If you prefer to go stamina route, put all your points into stamina, use medium armor(well, at least 5 piece of it), use max health+max stam/max health+max stam+stam regen food, enchant armor with health/stamina(ideally you want your health somewhere in 17k-20k area, though for open world you can honestly be fine with 12k too). Use only skills that cost stamina as these scale with your max stamina, wep damage and wep crit so will nbe strongest for you(unless we're talking about utility skills such as cc). For surviveability you'll eventually want some kind of selfheal, I believe Rally from 2h skilltree has something of the sort(I'm not very good at stamina), Vigor from Alliance War skilltree is a very good one. Use some dps oriented set like Night Mother's Gaze(you're right, it's pretty good) or Hunding's Rage. Use Sharpened weapons. Use a dps oriented mundus like Thief. Good luck ;)

If you're pc na, I can make you gear, I don't mind helping out:)
Alternatively, you can indeed not worry about that for now, but at least you'll now have some idea of how it works ;)

Thanks for the help. I'll try to play around with it sometime this week and change a lot around and see what works good.

Don't worry too much about high level players being able to kill stuff way faster than you. This is normal and due to:
    1. better gear sets: instead of just one (mediocre) set of gear, people who are max level and have been playing for a while usually have a full set of at least one "Best in Slot" gear, plus a two-piece monster set, plus all remaining armor/weapon pieces in some other set, or possibly combined with a Maelstrom or Masters weapon. They are going to get about 25% (guess) more damage than you from those sets alone.
    2. Improved gear: typically all items at least purple; most improved up to gold. This will improve both set effects and weapon/spell damage as well as armor values, for a buff of maybe 10% over green items.
    3. fully maxed skill morphs: not only are morphs of the original skills slightly more powerful, but each level of each skill is very slightly better. Overall, they will be maybe 3% or so better than you just because of this. They have also unlocked useful skills from various Guild, weapon, PvP and world skill lines (e.g. vamp or werewolf) that can be very (situationally) useful, e.g. the new Ultimate for each weapon skill line that is only available at L50 for each skill.
    4. maxed on skill line passives: they have been adventuring long enough to get lots of skill points, so that they can invest in ALL of the passives, rather than just a few. It does help - maybe by another 3-5%.
    5. Maxed Champion Points: after level 50, you gain CPs quickly, but these guys are already at the 600CP (useable) cap. They have a LOT of bonus passives, increased damage, increased regen, reduced costs, plus a lot of extra health/magicka and Stamina as a result. This is probably good for at least another 30% more damage than you.
    6. Best in slot weapon traits: "Sharpened" is currently significantly better, good for about 9% more damage than anything else.
    7. Experienced and with a good skills rotation that they know well. Knowing which class and weapon skills work best for each situation (and for their build), makes a HUGE difference (at least 50%), as does weaving in light and/or heavy attacks.

;tldr: Work on getting to level 50 and then CP 160 and higher as fast as you can. THEN lookup endgame builds for your class and try to get a decent combination of cp160 level gear (purple at first) and a skills rotation that works for the way you like to play. Then practice a lot with it - or try out other builds if the first one doesn't seem to work well. It takes time and experience to get better. Good luck!
