Blocking Techniques

Is this a thing??

Seems I am always too late or too early trying to block ... anything.

Or am I just noob with no skills?

You need to start your block as soon as you see the Mob start their wind up or tell (the sparkles for a Heavy or Magic Attack) If you wait, you will be too late on that. You can get it a little tighter, but lets get you blocking first then at the right time later.

For spell projectiles, you can react as they are in flight, but I would not wait much past half way to you.

Finally, if you are a Magic Character, you can do the Perma Block thing for most Mob fights, they are over before your stamina depletes. Bosses, that is a different story.

Learning the cues to block attacks took some getting used to for me on my tank also. Then there was learning how to monitor your surroundings AND your group while also keeping watch for the cues that warn you if you play as a tank. Then there are group fights where it's just a case of learning the mechanics of a boss and it's own cues for when the whole group has to block.

Keep at it and it will get easier, but no one is always going to be able to block at the perfect moment 100% of the time. I usually get sent flying by a heavy attack that I think "How did I not see that coming?" for umpteenth time. Lol

Just hold block while pressing your skills

Block is the first step before dodge rolling, unless you are a permablocker

As Nestor says, whenever you see a mob attacking --> Block --> dodgeroll --> counter attack.

That's basically the Tanking School 101 lol NEVER let go of the block button.

I've actually been having some issues with block since Homestead - while there's no real lag it appears the actual heavy attack and the visuals for it are slightly desync'd now, like I'll put block up before actually being hit on my screen and still get it, or ther other way round - I get block up early and my shield/health and stam ina deplete BEFORE I'm visually hit on the screen, after which I can safely let block go and nothing happens when I "get hit" on my screen. It's not huge, a question of maybe 0.5-1 seconds but it's noticeable and it's different, I feel as though maybe they changed the order in which some things are registered by the game or something. It's not fatal, I just have to make sure I have block up as soon as I see the cue as opposed to right before I get hit now.

That said part of it could be my ping, I'm usually running 200-300 on NA.

Whether or not that's part of the issue(s) you're having, good luck I'm sure you'll get there with some practice.

Takes practice. Watch for the visual cues.

No need to perma block for most content. Pretty much every boss has a windup.

Also never swap bar during a boss channel or heavy attack. It's not considered blocking and can get you killed. Always keep your long duration buffs on the back bar and your important skills on the front bar so swapping is minimized.
