magdk dps help

So I finally got around to borrowing a friend's target dummy to test my dps last night, and I'm really underwhelmed.

First things first: my magdk is a khajiit, which I know is not ideal but that isn't changing. I also primarily heal with this character, and add damage secondarily to groups, so I realize I'm not going to be a 50k dps Monster by any means. Lastly, I'm hardly in pure dps gear, which I'm working on but could use some opinions on.

My dps test clocked me at just shy of 11k over 9 minutes on a robust argonian target Skeleton. I was wearing 5 piece worms raiment, 2 pc ilambris, and 3 pc julianos.

During the test, I did not change my resto bar at all, I left my abilities set up as they would be if I were healing a vet dungeon run:

Front bar (resto):
ObsidIan shard
Healing springs
Mutagen
Siphon (the magic and health morph)
Igneous shield
Magma shell

Back bar (lightning staff):
Fiery breath
Elemental blockade
Eruption
Inner light
Molten armaments
Elemental rage

I set up this way for vet dungeons because most enemies are in aoe packs, and with ilambris plus these mixed lightning and fire damage abilities I can keep the meteor and lightning storm procs going pretty consistently.

My rotation:
(Buff with Molten and siphon)
Eruption
Elemental blockade
Fiery breath
Heavy attack x3
Elemental blockade
Fiery breath
Heavy attack x3
Repeat

By two sets of blockade/breath and 3 heavies, eruption is fading so I reapply and start the rotation over. I throw in elemental rage whenever it's ready.

I was honestly expecting more along the lines of 15-20k with that rotation and setup but obviously fell short. So what can I do to improve it?

Would it be worth dropping worms raiment for the elegant set to increase heavy attack damage (an extra 20% on top of the 40% from Molten armaments)?

    Also I did a second test trying to add in Searing strike and elemental clutch from the back bar, and that only dropped me even lower to 8.5k

    Worm = healer / support set, drop that if you want to do damage.
    Julianos is fine but dks have better options, such as Sun/Burning Spellweave.
    Illambris is only viable on a Heavy attack lightning/fire DK, otherwise grothdarr is the way to go.

    Also, do you have spell damage glyphs on all jewelry? That is a big difference. No restoration staff for DDs, only in solo play. Front bar lightning staff, drop siphon spirit.

    If you want good damage and an easy rotation with heavy attacks, check out the DK build you can find in my signature. It is not as strong as meta builds in single target (3-4k dps difference) but you crack 20k dps very easily with it, even with the non BiS setup of it. Plus it sustains very easily.

    I give up, I apparently am cursed to never dps with this character

    I changed to 5 burning Spellweave + 5 sun, and my dps is still only topping out at 13k. Spent all night and a good bit of gold for a gear change that only gained 2k dps.

    Sun is ***. It doesn't get boosted by spell power pots etc. Where on earth is your whip bro?

    Rotation is horrific.

    Back bar lit staff / resto is for noobs. Front bar inferno.

    Eruption>breath>embers>blockade>lit staff ult>power lash weave (lash is also free to cast) and repeat. Front bar meteor for extra magika.

    Work dots from longest to shortest.

    Seriously drop the resto for dps. Magdk solo doesn't need it. Just power lash and embers and nothing will kill you. If running as a DK healer just don't worry about dps. The other 2 should be pulling thier weight.

    Sun can be useful, but I would try this setup for starters:

    5x BSW, 3x Willpower jewelry, 2x Grothdar or Valkyn Skoria (or even Illambris if you don't have the others). Any sharp inferno staff and lightning staff (maelstrom staves would be best here, but any random sharpened staves work fine until then).

    Use the skills mentioned above.

    Common front bar setup: Whip, burning embers, engulfing flames, Elemental Blockade, inner light, meteor.

    Back bar (has lots of flexibility): Eruption, Molten Armaments (unless you have someone else providing Sorcery or use pots), Flexible skills: harness magicka, talons, FoO, chains, inhale, rearming trap, chains. Elemental Rage Ultimate.

    I am sure I left a few out there, but hopefully that helps you get started.

    Magicka DK for PvE is all about keeping dots ticking away and using the synergy of your fire skills to the max potential. Use whip for when everything is up until you need to reapply dots.

    This should easily get you 15k if you even halfway pay attention. When you get better, you should be getting 25k+.

    As others mentioned, both your setup as well as bars can be optimized for more DPS. First thing is: You either heal or you DPS. In dungeons, you don't do both at a time. Fiery breath is a DoT, so is embers. What you want here is to setup your bars properly. Then even with your gear, you can reach 20k ish.
    Back bar -> Eruption, wall of elements, flames of oblivion, trap, harness : Ulti(Standard of might)
    Front bar -> Inner light, whip, burning embers, fiery breath, flexi(I generally slot entropy here for more health) : Ulti(shooting star)

    You start on back bar, drop the DoTs, switch to front bar, apply fiery breath and burning embers, then whip+heavy. Once the dots expire, repeat.

    As for gear, to start with you can go for 5 julianos(if you don't have BSW), 3 willpower, 2 grothdarr(if you don't have that, then illambris/skoria but Grothdarr is bis) and 2 random inferno sharpened staff on both bars. Try Divines on gear, thief as mundus and spell damage enchant on the necklace and rings.

    Farming IA/Moondancer is not that difficult. Just takes a few runs.

    As @TheStealthDude said, its most about DoTs on mag DK.

    i run 5x BsW, 2x Grothdarr, 3x IA, and 2x Seducer ( DW/Destro) on my mDK ... u could also go 3x moondancer as well
