I can't let myself buy Crowns anymore

I was rummaging through my Xbox Live account to mess with my privacy settings for completely unrelated reasons, and I came across my Order History. I got curious. I opened my Order History. I started seeing my Crown purchases.

After purchase.

After purchase.

...

I opened a Calculator and went through my entire Order History, adding up every purchase of Crowns I've made in the last almost two years playing ESO, and I almost feel a little sick right now.

I've spent as of today, $671.04 on Crowns.

I've purchased Crowns equal to 11 times the value of the Base Game. I just....

If the purchases have provided you with value (in entertainment or convenience) it might not be "wasted" per se. Try taking you total amount and divide that by the price of a movie ticket or a concert ticket or a DvD or whatever you might do to otherwise entertain yourself. What is a movie, like 10 dollars pr hour to watch?

Basically this. You don't spend money on this game or any other game as an investment. There's gonna come a time when the servers are shut down (in 50 years I hope) and everything you earned in game will be erased. So it's more like spending money for entertainment, like a movie as they said

Divide the money spent by hours played and see what it works out as.

Generally I run on a £1/hour of gameplay or enjoyment as a good investment.

It's always scary to see how much you've "wasted" on a game up front but you have to think of all the relaxation, enjoyment and memories that's given you, then ask if that's worth it to you.

I think on EVE Online I am into the high thousands or low tens of thousands spent as I have been to fanfest in Iceland four times now, purchased a sub for eight years and purchased collectors editions, books and swag.
However that game gave me some amazing memories and friendships which I cherish.

Just a rough estimate but between Guild Wars 2, League of Legends and ESO, I've probably spent close to $1000 in the last few years, mostly on things that are purely cosmetic.

However I spend more time playing these games than any other activity in my life and I also work for a living so that's how I justify it.

    Don't dwell.

Last year I spent a few hundreds on electric lightsabers.
Some folks said: "Hey this is only a big LED torch!" but no, they are lightsabers!!! ;)
I enjoy them all (I wish we had these 10 year ago when we had our Star Wars wedding with my wife), also a lot of other things I'm happy to have.

What I'm most grateful for is that currently I earn enough to spend some money on what I like to do and not just what I have to do.
ESO is no different, it gives tons of excitement and joy and also teaches many things if one is aware enough.
I just have subbed 2 days ago, first time I've been playing and I'm glad I'm a supporter of this game which gave me many hours of great fun and more to come.
And the craft bag!! The craft bag!!! :)

So it may be frightnening to see a sheer number of dollars one spent on a hobby but please don't let a moralistic judgement deprive you from the experience you got out of that money. It's all yours, nobody will ever be able to take it away from you except yourself when you thing this way ;)

Yes its large amount of money:)
But like others also said I do want to say as well:

First, I spent around 40 euro on witcher 3 I think. Played the game for 1 hour. This is the case with most steam games.
Also a day out on the city with beer, vodka and taxi, I can easy spend 200 euro a night.
If you spend alot of your spare time in ESO and enjoy it, I don't see it as that big of a deal.

Don't worry about it. I must have spent at least USD 2000 over the last two years.

I earn a lot of money in real life, but have limited time to play. Therefore i purchase my way through ANYTHING that can save me time. I have spent ALOT of Crowns on everything from Bank Space, to Horse Training to Experience Scrolls, Respec Scrolls etc. etc. And now - there is the endless Crown Pit that is Race Change.

As an example; I am in Cyrodiil, and need to respec. If i leave i will have a 30 min queue to get in. Will i spend that 700 Crowns on a Respec, instead of my gold (which i do have plenty of as well)? You bet your sweet behind i will spend that 700 Crowns, to "win" 30 min of gameplay.

Never spent a single Crown on cosmetics though....

As the rest here are saying as well; Correct way of measuring, would be Cost / Time Played.

I'd hate to total up the amount. As for the money spent in comparison to the hours of fun you've managed to garner from the game, well, I spent over 2k hours on Oblivion and that cost me £30 all in. Same holds true with Civ 4.

I do have to remember this amount was over the span of the last 20 months of playing, so really its only scary to see the total number. If i had a great income every month this would be a non issue, but life isnt that nice to me.

And i know for a fact ill need to buy more Crowns for whenever we get new DLC.

Ahaha I don't even have the balls to go through my crowns purchases to see how much I have spent in the last 2 years, probably over a 1000. Same with SWTOR i tend to ignore my purchase history. *don't look at it, don't look at it, don't look at it*

The game had tons of entertainment value without the crowns . I bought crowns once last year , like $40 . I was just as entertained as anyone else . You know your economic situation better then anyone so make decisions based on that . Six hundred dollars could cover a couple car payments or a major repair at home if there's an emergency . I think you are wise to evaluate the overall costs .
