Morrowind Pricing - for new and existing players

So, this is the first time I'm coming to the forums specifically to complain. Here's my grief:

New player...
Morrowind Digital Edition = £39.99
Total Paid = £39.99

Existing player...
Base Game = £19.99
Morrowind Update = £29.99
Total Paid = £49.98

Make of this what you will, I just wanted to point it out as I've read a backlog of Morrowind opinions and nobody's talking about it. It's only 10 quid, but it's the principle. Where's the loyalty, ZOS? Thinking I'm gonna boycott this devilry. Plenty going on in the base game and DLCs.

Okay the only way I can even remotely come to terms with this post is that it's reaching for a reason to cause outrage.

    1. The vast majority of existing players probably bought the game at a higher price point than £19.99. The game was 60 USD when it first came out.

    2. The basis and premise for your little math equation is already flawed. Of course an existing player is going to pay more than a new player. This is because they have purchased all prior expansions. However, this is no different than any other MMO.

For example: A player of WoW that has been with them since the beginning (Vanilla) is going to have payed more than a new player just joining in the newest expansion (Legion). For this example Blizzard usually offers the newer players a bundled deal of all prior expansions when they purchase Legion. But everyone buys Legion at the full price of the expansion.

In other words Zenimax is actually giving you the loyalty deal here, they are actually offering an update price. Not many game companies with active MMOs do this...so please don't try to fuel a fire where there is none.

It's a bundle deal, of course it's going to be cheaper.

The benefit you get for paying more is early access - even if you buy the bundle now you have to wait until June to actually play it, whereas people who bought the base game already have been playing since...whenever they bought it.

In fact if I was looking at buying ESO today, knowing what I know about how the game works, I think I'd get the Gold Edition (£40) and the Morrowind Upgrade (£30) and start playing right away instead of getting the Morrowind bundle (£40) and the DLC bundle (£24) and a horse (£4). You get the same stuff either way for almost the same price and you can start playing right now.

I bought the game last summer for $60, right before the price was cut to $30. Big deal. Whenever you buy something, there is always a chance the price will drop later.

This is a bundle offer. You don't get to play until June if you buy the bundle.

Okay... if you guys say so! I was thinking along the lines of "I've been supporting this game for 12 months with subs and crown store purchases, how about a discount?" but if you think it's reasonable to pay more for the same product because you have been using it for longer, by all means buy it at the stated price.

This is the same scheme that mobile phone companies and the like pull, offering cheaper deals to new customers and cranking up the prices for existing customers because they're betting you've become invested in the service and won't leave. Sounds like they're right on the mark.

Wait...you're worried about spending more than other people, but you subscribe? How does that work?

An existing player is playing the game right now. You have to wait til June for the Morrowind bundle. There's the £10 value.

So you're arguing that a company that makes a brand new product with new content and offerings shouldn't be adequately compensated for their work? And in this case they are giving you the loyalty deal by offering you an upgrade price rather than charge you the full price because you already have the base game.

I challenge you to go find another triple AAA MMO that offers you a better deal as an existing player than ZOS is already offering. Hint: you won't find one. What you will find is that the company charges you full price for the expansion.

Totally agree with what the people before me have said, we have already been playing the game, even if you start now its still 3 1/2 months untill release. So for that time I'd be happy to pay what little amount of money it is.

I spent 69, no wait, 89 (Collectors Edition and Imperial Edition) at release. I paid that price because at the time, it was the right value of the game for me. The fact that it dropped in price does not mean much to me.

I spent $100 on the collectors edition of Morrowind that is coming out because that is good value for what I am getting. I know I can buy Morrowind cheaper, but I won't get all the things I want with it.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

But existing players are getting a discount, $30 instead of $40 for new players.

On the other side I only paid £12 for the base game and got 2,100 free crowns, so I don't really feel like I can complain about what anyone else pays.

Also goes to show this is not the first time new players have been able to get a better deal (although that was a bit of a round-about way of doing things), and I'm sure it won't be the last.

As Nestor said all you can really do is decide if the price being offered seems reasonable to you. You could spend forever waiting for a better deal, and with a game like this you then end up losing out because of all the stuff that happens in the time you're not playing.

Where are you getting your prices from?

I'm seeing 39.99 for Morrowind Upgrade (for existing players) and 59.99 for Morrowind Standard (new players).

I don't think you understand how numbers work. We are many people, you are one person. If we were going to apply value to our opinions based on how many people in the thread have that opinion, as is your suggestion, we would win. Of course, that's a ridiculous way to value opinions but that's a whole other discussion.

As others have said you should pay more if you buy the game now because you get to play it now not in June.

    ESO (gold) on PS4:

    Physical: $50
    Digital: $100

    Morrowind:

    Physical: $100
Digital: $70 (base upgrade) to $130 (collectors)

Honestly, given that I paid maybe $70 for ESO a few weeks post launch, I'm picking I'll be able to grab a physical copy of Morrowind for a similar price, in a similar time-frame. A few months post release, and it'll be cheaper still.

I'm not a fan of this "chapter" malarky...it smells to me, but seeing as I do want to give the content a try, I shall be purchasing a copy. For as little as possible. Lucky for me, I'm in no rush.

Thanks. Bit flummoxed as to why an expansion has the base game included, explains the cost though.
