Why do we have to craft even the most basic furniture?

Well, for one have you checked guild stores?

Everything an NPC crafts for you is another thing a crafter wont make and sale - in all likelihood.

The selection is ridiculously awful. I'm not even sure why some of the furniture merchants exist. LOL.

Because if furniture wasn't an awful grind, no-one would pay crowns for it. I think it comes down to business plan rather than fun gameplay.

Basic furniture is not an awful grind. I've made a ton of basic furniture pretty easily. The only thing that's an awful grind is getting the crafting stations and higher-end furniture items by doing master writs. Yes, I think that was done on purpose to try to get crown store sales. :/
