Hello all and jolly good day!
I have been playing since the Beta on the PC then went to console and have been playing it on and off with every new DLC. I think that the Elder Scrolls Online is a great game for a lot of reasons but also has quite a few flaws in terms of making it feel like an authentic, open world experience such as the Elder Scrolls franchise is known for. It's great to see the amount of people that play this game even with it's flaws and I am looking forward to Morrowind and the changes that it will bring. Today's ESO however I think could be quite an improved game if it addressed in my mind some critical flaws that not only make the game less interesting and dull but that keep away potential new players. I have been doing a lot of thinking about what are the good and bad sides of this game and these are what I thought of. Bare in mind they need work but it'd be awesome to get your opinions and see how you guys feel about my ideas.
Issues:
Going into any major and popular zone in ESO, you have to combat the massive amount of other people from each faction that flood into popular spots on the map such as zone bosses and dark anchor spawns. As a result, most of the time PvE zergs quickly and brainlessly down anything in their path and continue to camp out waiting for the gear that they need. To me that is not a rewarding gaming experience that challenges it's users but rather bores someone into leaving and keeps them uninterested. For the zones that don't have quality armor drops, they usually are more inviting for solo PvE with less people running around but then there's hardly any incentive to go to those zones.
In terms of the factions, I think that it's weird to have all 3 factions intermingle with one another and have the ability to freely access major enemy cities in such a friendly manor. Isn't there supposed to be a good ol war going on and the hostility that war brings?
Unfortunately all the cool aspects and accessories of this game involve purchases through the crownstore along with the RNG of the crown crates. I understand that this game needs to make a profit but it get's to a certain point where it shouldn't require real financial investment in order to access some of the unique items the crownstore and ESO has to offer.
Possible Solutions:
I myself would love to see incorporating the bounty system somehow where depending on the zone and regions that you explore, the players in that zone unite under the faction that they represent and there is more of a sense concerning each of the 3 faction communities and zones. Along with that, players that are in foreign land that continue to slay opposing faction players earn a bounty and can receive some sort of reward for being behind enemy lines and coming out a successful soldier. An example would be that you are an EP player traversing through the marshes of Shadowfen and come across a DC player that has been marked for a bounty where then they would engage in combat. It would not only be an exciting experience for players to explore and quest in zones but it would also give incentives to revisit zones across Tamriel other than finishing cadwell silver and gold. It would also eliminate mindless farming of zone bosses and anchors.
The details of this obviously would need a thorough examination and work in terms of thinking how players could not abuse the bounty system and other aspects presented by an open world PvP zone. Of course not all zones would have an open world PvP mentality and each contested one would need to readjust the waypoint layout for each faction. Contested zones would have more waypoints for the home faction along with having protection from rival factions. Towns would be accessible to all players free of hostility however the larger a town, the more hostile the guards.
The rewards would (if in a perfect world) be armor, weapons, jewelry, mounts, items, and other accessories that are desired by the player base at large. Instead of having to buy crowns, people could earn them in game by investing time into the game rather out of their pockets. Perhaps players could even get crowns from the head of their factions for the duty they have towards serving their alliance?
I really like the one megaserver of this game but perhaps there could be multiple servers like there are campaigns in order to address the massive amount of people that form mindless zergs in Cyrodiil and potential contested world zones?
Thank you so much for entertaining my ideas about how ESO's open world could improve and give this game a lot more potential! Please don't hesitate to brainstorm and criticize on how I am missing something or how to better the ideas that I have presented. I think that this game is finally moving in the right direction with Morrowind but there is still a lot to be fixed!
Cheers
