That's exactly how I feel too. If it wasn't because of the gems, the crates would be worthless.
The long term goal with crates is getting an Apex mount. But while you're at it you're able to use the gems you get and get other cool items we've never seen before.
I'm all for Crown Crates as an extra. After all it's only seasonal.
