So, due to FB taking intellectual property from Zenimax (as decided by the US Legal System) FB are ordered to pay $500m - now clearly there will be a protracted rebuttal from FB - but in the meantime why not free Character Slots for everyone? :D

Facebook as I read isn't who was to pay. It's the folks who left ID.

Carmac and the other fella is how I read another article. Not sure what is accurate tho

"Facebook was found not liable, while Oculus is responsible for $250 million of the half-billion owed to ZeniMax. The two companies weren't the only defendants; Oculus executives were also named and have been found liable. Former Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe (who recently stepped down for a different role) owes $150 million for trademark infringement, while founder Palmer Luckey and CTO John Carmack each owe $50 million. Notably, Carmack is a former ZeniMax employee."

It'll all change over the course of several legal wrangling. These things tend to get buried in paperwork until one offers the other a much lower settlement amount to make it go away.

Not sure if that will be the case with this one due to the volume of investment from FB in VR. They definitely see it as a viable future platform.

You mean Facebook will promise to pay the settlement in quarterly payments until the debt is paid off, then forgo several of those payments, but plead that it's ok, because they just changed their repayment model and will now be paying Zenimax less than was originally agreed 3 times a year instead?

    (Sorry, couldn't resist. :p )

yes it's real, but it's Zenimax Media who won the case, not ZOS.

Im guessing you did not actually read the story.

Zeni was requesting 6 billion in total. 2 billion for "stealing" intellectual property and an extra 4 billion worth of salt.

    The actual claims were dismissed.

The money comes from breech of disclosure aggreements from their ex employee and some other nonsense I cant remember.

500 million out of 6 billion?

Zeni is only worth like 2 billion and they were trying to sue someone else for 6 billion?

    http://www.polygon.com/2017/2/1/14474198/oculus-lawsuit-verdict

"Of the $500 million, Oculus is paying out $200 million for breaking the NDA and $50 million for copyright infringement. Oculus and Luckey each have to pay $50 million for false designation. And Iribe has to pay $150 million for the same, final count." - Sourced from the article linked above.

All the money is from non-disclosure agreements and copyright infringement. The copyright infringement is from oculus demoing the vr system with one of zenimax' video games. Co-Founder of Oculus used to work for zeni.

Oculus VR was sold for 2 billion to facebook. Facebook is now making a small fortune from them.

This is very common in manufacturing industries, gaming is no exception. Zeni is jealous of facebooks 2 billion dollar mount and they wanted a piece of the action.

That 2 billion is more than zenimax is even worth.
