Been away for a year...should I just buy the GOLD PACK to get back into the game?

I'm only about Level 35 but I want to get back into this game. Is getting the Gold Pack the best thing for me now?

id recommend against it. Theres always going to be new expansions, and its likely you wouldnt be interested in all the older content. In general its best to grab a subscription to play everything when your ready to, and if you cancel your sub spend the crowns to grab the content you really like. You can always resub later to go back as well.

If money is of no concern, yeh you should get all expansions or just sub. All of the expansions have a couple of things in them that you probably want to get. That said, a lot of it won't be of use to you at level 35.

I'd recommend spending a week or two with the base game to experience all its glorious flaws, bugs, performance issues, and imbalances first, lest you be striken with buyers remorse right after dropping cash on it.

If you still want to stick around after that, I'd recommend the sub honestly. It's about the only thing in this game available for real world money that's actually worth its value.

You're better of getting a subscription than buying the DLCs given the way that ZOS does business. They have added subscription benefits that make it almost necessary (crafting bag with unlimited space saving hours and hours of headaches), and they'll likely continue to add more (like being able to add more items in a house next patch) . Since the sub gives you full access to the DLCs, you'd be double spending if you had both.

Unfortunately yes. There are people that turn a blind eye to it, claim there's nothing wrong, etc. but yes.
It's not impossible to enjoy the game around said issues, but I felt the best advice I could give is to know what you're getting into.
The game is rapidly speeding towards a cash-grab; gambling crates (with deplorable drop/exchange rates) 30$ mounts, 20$ race change tokens, cash-only crafting motifs, and so on.
Meanwhile bugs and issues go unfixed and mostly not even acknowledged by the devs, and major content that has been due, like spellcrafting and the justice system, gets put on indefinite hold or even outright cancelled.
BUT, updates like housing, which can be MONETIZED, get pushed to the top.
Communication from the devs is almost nonexistent and PvP is a broken mess currently with the implementation of 'proc sets'(which you can read about elsewhere) but is left to languish until the next major patch all the way through the new year and likely into the first quarter of next year.

And the saddest thing... is that even in its deplorable state, it's still better than most MMOs on the market.
It can still be enjoyed, it still hasn't(yet) gone down any of the biggest pitfalls like P2W, but it's future is in question for me and many other sharp-minded players that look ahead, so I caution you what you're getting into.

I'd strongly recommend to have access to the entire game. The 4 DLCs are awesome, even though your mileage may vary, and there's stuff in there that you'll need and content that will be run on a regular basis with your future guild mates, whoever they are.

The question is "how"... and I'd say, as things stand now, that subbing being almost compulsory for a comfortable game experience, then subbing is the best way. Just buy the base game and sub.

Well, before spending more money I'd suggest to play the game a bit more and see how much you like it. There have been some changes with Tamriel One update and you make like it more or dislike, so before doing a decision test the game a bit.
Anyway, if you decide to hang up a bit longer but you don't have enough time to justify the payment for a monthly subscription, then buy the DLC bundle you you can have access to like anytime like I did.
But again, test the game more before spending money on it.

The crown store has its own bugs. Some of the holiday hoods can't be dyed, and the two wolf puppy pets have active collision, so you can block players with them.

"the deplorable state" and other such stuff is simply nonsense. I've not had a single crash in literally months, not one gamestopping bug, etc. Lots of doom and gloom hyperbole on the forums, and even that poster amditted its better than the competition.

The sub is the way to go. Its cheap and gives ya everything. You can do without a single crown store purchase, and should for a couple of months...outside maybe a cheap mount if you dont have one. Its almost entirely stuff you simply don't need when you get down to it.

But the sub is money well spent, for the access to DLCs, for 10% exp, for the craft bag. Good deal.

    Solid game.

Don't believe the hate. Take it with a grain of salt. And remember, those players are STILL here playing and supporting the game directly or indirectly, so it can't be as bad as they claim. If it were they'd be posting about it on the game they are enjoying instead, not sitting around like a ghost on a game they don't play.

Here's a realistic take, from someone who actually came back about a month ago:

I decided to come back after playing the WoW: Legion expansion. I had my fill of Tabtarget MMOs (had recently played in Everquest 1's progression server, EQ2, and WoW), and wished to return to an action MMO. My choices were ESO and Tera. Both decent games with their own pros and cons.

I settled on ESO since I wanted a more.. realistic and western style game.

Since I've been back, I've enjoyed myself. The Tamriel Unlimited as its called, or One Tamriel Patch allows us to play in any zone at any level and do just about any dungeon at any level with anyone. This was a great boon. It means I can play with friends who have varying levels (who also came back), as well as play any alts I wish.

One of my pet peeves with the game was the VR system where you get to 50.. 'beat the game' and then do it all over again from another faction's view. You had to as well.. to go from VR1-14. That sucked and I quit because of it. Now I don't have to go back and do the other areas. And if I decide to, I can do them in any order I choose. That issue was mitigated and I'm free to progress in the game how I wish.

What I've done is bought the subscription. You get 1500 crowns a month, a crafting bag, and some bonus exp for everything you do. You also get the DLC's for free while subbed. So I recommend this. The crowns make the sub basically free. The crafting bag is a god send. The exp bonus is just a thin layer of icing on the cake.

Personally I don't see a point to buying the DLC's. Yes, the sub cost is more expensive over the long run. But the other perks make it better as well. If you plan to have multiple alts and crafters, it might pay for itself.

Other's have brought up issues such as bugs and glitches. The game is actually pretty solid. My only issue on this front is a sever hiccup due to the over abundance of players. Make no mistake.. this is a popular game.

As for claims of a cashgrab. I haven't seen it. Everything in the crownstore is either an inferior (to crafted) consumable, or vanity items. Those Elks and Storm Atronach mounts that everyone wishes were cheaper, are not needed to play the game. I doubt anyone has been passed over in a group or guild over someone who spent crowns on something. So to say that Zenimax is being greedy is ridiculous. Sounds like the greed is on the player end when players are envious when they see players riding on something they themselves don't have and perhaps cannnot afford or do not wish to pay such price.

They'd have more of a point if they said this a year ago about DLC's or Members getting access to content. Course.. why didn't they say something 20 years ago when the first game expansions were released? But they are entitled to their opinions, as astigmatic as those opinions might be.

Exactly this poster. I took the sub when I came back after a year hiatus. The crafting bag alone will save you headaches. You will use your bank fully still but now at least your alts with their crafting needs don't need to be farming mats. Bugs and glitches are part and parcel of every game, not just this one.

On PC, the 180 day sub works out at c £1-60 pw and you get 9000 free Crowns.

It works out at less than the average price of a half-pint of beer in the UK and is far cheaper than just about every Sunday newspaper.

I look upon the £1-60 pw as actually saving me money because I would spend far more than that in one night at the pub.

The Sunday papers either depress me or get me het up. Both are stress factor, whereas playing the game gives me fun, chills me out and with no time to read the papers, I do not need to buy one - money saving with no stress. Lol, the game even has health benefits!

In my opinion, the sub money is well spent. o:)

I play on PC (EU) and therefore I cannot comment on either PS4 servers or their dungeon queues.

I will add that my calculations at #15 are based on subs for PC; they work out to be slightly more expensive for 'game-boxes'.

pesonally, I'd wholle recommend just going free2plöay until lvl 50, and if you still like it, sub for n months (and cancel right away or sub via some form of one-time payment).

    1) it's cheaper
    2) gives you access to absolutely everything you want / need.
    3) if said subscription runs out, you can buy whatever dlc content you still want to keep and zero (granted with special offsers maybe only almopst zero) extra cost compared to purchasing right away - unless you spent your crowns before but hey - just odn't spend them

Just play the base game until you hit level 50 and get bored of the stuff you can do, then sub and grind the hell out of the DLC and craft DLC sets you like and unsub when you feel like taking a break or scaling down on your play time. You'll get some crowns from subbing, and eventually you can use those crowns to buy the DLC you particularly like and enjoy.

I got Gold for PS4 (EU) and I kinda regret it. Besides from crafting and collecting rewards (disguises etc), I only really use IC.

There are issues with the dungeon group finder, most of them player-induced though. You'll get kicked a lot from groups if you are level 35, and will generally be better off in a mature, friendly guild if you are lucky enough to find one of those. They are far more rare on PS4 than on PC - several times I've seen guild members demand gold payment from low level guildies to do dungeons with them. I won't rule out that this is mostly a European scrub-like mentality, and that things might be somewhat better on the NA server where everyone is able to communicate with one another in an intelligible way.

There's plenty of players, but usually there will only be one PVP server close to population lock (Thornblade) while the others are empty. Maybe that will change with the upcoming balance fixes.

Depends on what you like. Some aspects of the game are having their issues, but others are working just fine. Since introduction of One Tamriel, PvE is more lively than you might expect. PvP has some problems that Zos might solve or ruin it even more. But no matter what, if you find any aspect of the game enjoyable, why not subscribe or buy dlcs while bundled. Roam the land some more before deciding what to do. Best of luck.

Quick question while on the Gold pack subject:
If I buy it from a local game story, I can download it and play it with my current account, right?

I'm a little paranoid with all things the community said regarding the crown store prices and the fact I couldn't play the game for a year after its release (well, I didn't want to pay monthly for it. Glad I didn't)
