Templar leveling - help with skills please

I just hit 30 on my Magika Templar/Destro and I am having trouble choosing skills for normal, PvE questing. Any advice?

To this point I have survived with a very simple rotation:
  • Reflective Light: sets 3 mobs on fire and gives me Major Prophecy
  • Wall of Elements: to lay down an AoE DOT
  • Spam Puncturing Strikes: I then spam Strikes for 1-3 bad guys
  • Self heal with Rushed Ceremony: for when I get hit

Now I am starting to struggle with groups of 3 and bosses. I have lots of new AoE options and single target spells that I do not know if any are better than my basic set up. Should I switch to Spear Shards? Focus on using Entropy from the Mages Guild for the buff? Have a weapon just for bosses and one just for normal play?

I've overwhelmed by the AoEs, the buffs, and the number of options - and I seem to be failing.

Which skills would you suggest I try out?

Thank you.

PS: I tried Deltia's Omega build but this is my first character so I do not have access to Seducer armor or good gear. I find the Omega build is getting me killed with crummy gear :)

My elf is a magplar and aspiring healer. And I'm a pretty novice level player so plenty of the fancy / sophisticated stuff eludes me. As one fairly new to (but in love with) the magplar healer, let me share what is working well for me at L48. She fights incredibly well and, as such, I have the flexibility to now focus more on the healing side of things.

She's all magicka with just enough gear hp augmentation to survive. She can run with pretty low hp due to how potent her self-heals are.

    Here is her bar setup:

Bar 1 (Fire staff with Crescent Sweep Ult)
Purification, Radiant Glory, Blazing Spear, Reflective Light, Puncturing Sweep

Bar 2 (Resto staff with Crescent Sweep Ult)
Mutagens, Extended Ritual, Breath of Life, Healing Springs, Repentance

    Basic 'rotation' or sequence:
    Mutagens, Extended Ritual to prep.
Blazing Spear, Reflective Light and Purification – they all three hit about the same time.
Light attacks while maneuvering until the Reflective Light and Purification 6 seconds is up. Then refire Reflective light if time before Puncturing Sweep. She generally circles her foes while sweeping, reapplying blazing spear when she can. The sweep does most of her self healing, augmented with BoL if she really gets in trouble. She’s gotten good at blocking, bashing, dodging and maneuvering to avoid getting disabled because being stunned or disabled stops the killing/healing magic of sweeping. If vs a big foe, once they get low on hp, she uses Radiant Glory as she backs up. If vs many foes, she'll pull life from their corpses when she can with Repentance.

As destruction staff gets high enough, I’ll evaluate its ultimate. If I like it, I’ll keep it and the destr staff. If I don’t like it, I’ll probably go dual resto staves. I found Destructive Clench, Wall of Elements and Force Pulse all good skills but the problem was I found others to be better and there are only 10 slots.

We need to develop and evaluate 3 ablities (Spirit Siphon, Elemental Drain and Channeled Focus). The problem is that her bars are full of good skills so it will be a matter of evaluating if any of those three are worth bumping one of her current abilities. Or perhaps should be swapped in for certain missions.

Please bear in mind that I consider my elf to be a fledgling magplar healer. But if you say that Deltia’s info is a bit too much to handle right now (like it is for me) then my basic set up (which is serving me very well for normal pve) is humbly offered with the hope that it may be of some help.

    Thank you!

Do I need to master the skill of switching between weapons during combat? I actually thought they were kind of like specs - I use either bar 1 or bar 2. I have not gotten good at swapping weapons mid fight.

I feel your pain. I had to work my (old and not so limber fingers) pretty hard to get good at it but it comes with practice. I think of bar 1 as much more offensive in nature and bar 2 as more supportive, but readily use both during combat.

I intentionally practiced a lot to get smooth at using BoL under pressure at a moments notice. I also intentionally force the use of Repent (also on bar 2) to get smooth switching bars.

Regardless, I did develop the ability to switch bars pretty seamlessly in a fight and find the skill well worth the effort of developing it.

My mouse has a couple extra buttons on it and by putting weapon swap there, it really helped.
