Questions from a newbie templar

I've never played as a templar asides from once very briefly, despite having played all of the other classes, but now as I want to give this class a shot, I have a few questions.

-What's the best weapons to use as a healer?
-Stam vs magicka, which is better? (I'm leaning towards mag for healer)
-Tanking vs healing, is one better, or are they both just as good, if so why?

Thanks!

Definitely, a stamina, healer with heavy armor. You will be the anti-Meta.

    Troll detected.

For a healer restoration staff is the obvious choice, with either a destruction staff or two swords on your off bar depending on what skills you want to use.

Stamina builds do not make good group healers, magicka all the way.

As for tanking vs healing, that's entirely a personal preference. I prefer healing by a little bit, but I have friends that prefer to tank. Try both and see what you enjoy the most.

Haha, a stam healer would definitely be an impossible feat, although with all the special snowflake builds out there, it wouldn't surprise me if I stumbled across one....

I'm probably going to go for a healer, as I often side heal with a lot of my characters anyway, and I like the idea of a pure magicka build. Thanks for the feedback!

As a healer you should be a full magicka build. Pick a race that has a magicka bonus and put all your attribute points there.
Wear at least 5 pieces of light armor for the cost reduction and magicka regeneration bonuses, of course you can go 7/7 light, 5/1/1 or 5/0/2 to get the undaunted passives as well as more health & resistance.
Use a restoration staff on your main bar and a destruction one on the back bar; restoration spells are cheaper than Templar class skills, and you should use primarily those, while the destruction staff line has a few useful skills as well - elemental drain is a must if you are running with magicka DDs.
Also level your mages guild skill tree and grab entropy because Templars lack a skill that gives major sorcery; the skill that comes before that, inner light, it's simply too good to ignore for any magicka build.
Start running dungeons and level your undaunted. Orbs is very important if you run with magicka DDs, and the passives are good as well
Do PvP and grab most of those skills, purge, warhorn and barrier are by far the most useful as a healer.
Craft gear that gives you good regeneration and cost reduction (ex. Armor of the Seducer), then concentrate on getting dropped sets. Some of the best are Spell Power Cure (White Gold Tower), Worm's Rayment (Vaults of Madness) and Infallible Mage (Craglorn trials). Endgame you will want to combo one of those with a crafted set or even with one of the other dropped sets. For example SPC+IM is considered BiS for trials.

    A nicely done guide here.
