... I hate the feeling of disorientation that comes with joining an new mmo. People yelling in chat "come help me fight *#$&" and "*&#! is up come and get it now" and I am like errrrr it will take me all day to research who bla bla bla is and then decide if I care to fight bla bla bla and by then it will be something else everyone wants to go do. It's just overwhelming. Try to ask questions and I get picked apart by some basement kid's ego flack, "What do you mean you don't know who bla bla bla is, I googled it in five seconds!" [sources] Suggesting I should spend all my days researching like I am in college instead of trying to relax and play a game. RELAXING.

Then dont worry about the chat for now. Play the game on your own, learn things, places, names on your own time then once you do you can then start answering the call outs in chat.

Just disable Chat, until you're level 50. Take your time, no need to rush.

You know chat is not a thing you HAVE to follow... there are usually 100 conversations that run simultaneously. Also just because someone claims he has the holy grail of knowledge usually doesn't mean they do.

So it is prudent to figure out how it works on your own at the first time. Just enjoy the landscape. Find out where the towns and quests are on the map and level a bit. Before you go after World Bosses Group Dungeons and Trials. (Or PVP) :D

Also if people ask around for help its usually a general call. Not aimed at you.

OP in case you are not aware - you are not obligated/forced to respond to chat or help anyone. Just go ahead and play as you like.

You don't have to drive yourself up to a boiling rage point over a non-problem, it is not very healthy.

I started playing this game when it first dropped on PS4. So this was before there was text chat. I played it for awhile but almost quit because I was so overwhelmed by everything. But I stuck it out, paid attention to what was going on around me, and I spent quite a bit of time surfing the forums. This being my first MMO, I even had to look up a glossary of MMO slang lol. I think joining a noob-friendly guild would help you too. It just takes time to adjust and figure things out, and just remember it's not a race :) best of luck to ya!

Yeah, the angry condescending "basement kids" as you put it are hilarious. It makes me wonder if these people hit the ground running and managed to clear most vet dungeons within a day or 2 of playing the game for the first time. To be fair to them though, I think we all forget our own learning curve and if you meet gobshites more often than not, the chances are you'll become the very thing you despised in the beginning too.

And then get kicked out of every dungeon&pvp group because nothing makes you more ignorant than ignoring chat, discussions and advice in an MMO. Better get social or get the new skyrim!

    OP:
You can windows+tab to a second desktop, where you can have your Google window open. Or if you play on console you can just use your phone.
But you don't need to. 50% of the playerbase have no clue about game mechanics. But I am confident you're not that kind of person. Because you know how to use a message board.

Well, there are honestly only about three ways to look at this...

You can just turn off chat completely and ignore any chance of also coming across other players who, like you, may be feeling about the same and who could become game friends to play across content with -- in which case, you will effectively kill off any possibility of coming across the oodles of nice people that actually exist in this game....

Or... you can leave the chat on and simply have it running as background noise, a way to see the trend of things in a given zone, at a certain level, etc. thereby making it part of your learning about the game. Sometimes you can tell a lot about content just by watching what people say about it in chat. File for later....

Or you can just relax as you say and stop worrying one way or the other about what is said or isn't. Being disoriented is part of the process, as you know, and there is nothing wrong with it. Being new has it's own rewards if you embrace them...no need to worry about grind yet, no need to focus on min maxing builds, plenty of time to experiment, explore, enjoy the content, smell the roses. Most at end game have longs since forgotten about all this...consider yourself lucky to not be among them yet ;)

If there is something in chat I don't understand, I ignore it. Especially when I am new. If I'm interested then I will say I'll join to kill that boss and just wing it. Though I understand how overwhelming it can be at first. When I created a Covenant character, it confused me to no end when people kept saying "DC UA". Of course we are under attack! We are all Daggerfall Covenant; when are we not under attack? I finally realized it was Dragonclaw Keep.

Then there still is all this LF VoL GIG A3839Q cP CvN MaD BRO CP1073… I see in chat and I have no idea what people are talking about, and I've been playing since launch!

When they say those things in the zone chat, they want someone out of all the zone to come do that thing with them, it doesn't have to be you in particular. If you don't know what they're talking about, well... it's probably not important to you. If you asked where/what it was and they were hostile to you in return, well that's just *** things. Best to ignore that person, they're probably not important to you either :p
If you quote someone, and intend for them to see what you have said, be sure to Mention them with @[insert name].
