You're not SUPPOSED to kill him though, just weaken him until he summons the Gargoyle and then the Gargoyle is the 1 that kills him.
Now if that happens and the quest and/or pledge doesn't update with him dying then yeah that's a problem...

I just did this on PC NA, killed him and the gargoyle and got credit. I did this about 30 minutes ago.
