Dunmer Sorceror, do I HAVE to go fire?

Newbie Sorc here; as a Dunmer, it looks like I get +9% dmg to fire. But I like the look and feel of a lightning staff.

Can I go lightning and give up the 9% dmg? In the later game, does lightning do the same dmg?

thanks for any replies

As of Shadow of the Hist it includes ice and lightning, but not as much as fire.

Altmer increase all three elemental damage types. Dunmer increase fire specifically.

There's nothing about it that says you absolutely must run a fire staff on a Dunmer, but there's no way to recover that 9% for another element.

You don't HAVE to play any kind of way. You play however you want to. Just think of it as an optional Buff that you can take advantage of if you so choose, like a free bonus. But at the same time you're not shooting yourself in the foot if you don't take it.

I was hoping to hear something like fire is resisted more, and lightning less, so it balances out.

A larger benefit of the lightning staff is that channeled (medium) attacks can't be reflected

I have a dunmer sorceror, and use only lightning and ice staves. It works fine - sure I do give up a b it of effectiveness, but as long as you are not hung up about that... go with what is FUN, not with what is "best"!

    It's the opposite, sadly.

If you want to min max, fire is the way to go regardless of your race and class.

Magicka races do not have variety and pretty much limited. For best damage max out, For example:

    Altemrs are preferable for Sorcers

Dunmer are preferable for Dragon Knight, race and class both increases fire damage. This race fire damage bonus is pretty descent and not ignorable for effective DPS gain.

No good race for healers like sorcerer and dragon knights, altmers and breton are pretty much same healers (bith heal same, altmers have good 9% magicka recovery + elemental damage incresd), also dunmer do almost same. So you you can choose any one from three for Templars.

But preferred are dunmer as you get stamina buff (which is very good for PVP) and Templar have fire damage skills which damage increaes by dunmer fire damage increaes pasives.

Dunmer are only 1% less magicka than Altmers and Breton which is not any consider able difference

Breton lacks any serious passives except they have 10% maximum magicka, similar as Altmers.
