hmm then they might as well put links in the chat that automatically group you.
Pretty much like an item linked in the chat.
Then you can link "Normal:darkshade cavern" "silver:darkshade cavern" or "gold:darkshade cavern"
    double click to join in...

They have this sort of system for grouping in Tera.

It's pretty neat: basically a LFG window on its own where people post LFG messages. One click and it send a PM to crown with an accept/decline option (1 click too). Also the window is not on the way when you don't want it to and you can look at it everytime you want to.

and then if people type "LFD spidleclutch" it does not appear in chat, but is automatically redirected to any spot in the LFG window where a spot is open for that respected dungeon +role xD
If no spots are open a link is created instead for that dungeon in the LFG window

Also the LFG window will automatically check if a player is eligible for a silver/gold version

    who the hell types "LFD"

Yes, the language is deteriorating rapidly. It is a crying shame, really. These young whippersnappers use confusing symbols like tbsp, PhD, USA or etc - what is school education coming to?! Why, the other day I opened a dictionary(!) and right there in the definition I saw "adj." How am I supposed to know what it means? Truly, abbreviations are the scourge on our beautiful language.
dating as far back as NES or Atari or even further.
It is spelled "Nintendo Entertainment System" by those who want to be understood.

They could make the lives of those people that abundantly use abbreviations easier, and make those things disappear from chat for those that are annoyed by it.Its a win-win situation

WTB + item : all the places where its available will show on the map
Wts: you'll be able to put it in the guild store of choice directly
Lfg + dungeon name;a link will be created in chat with normal ,silver gold medals next to the name.

I'm not saying this to be mean, but most of the time I don't even understand what players are requesting, especially when it comes down asking people for dungeons in the zone.

I'm fairly certain it's just laziness and illiteracy; heck, even many of the abbreviations make no sense. Take "DLC", for example. "Downloadable" is one word, so if you really, really must abbreviate it, it should be DC.

So you just called everyone using it a lazy idiot... that makes you what? Old and still going for like playground insults?

As for the reason most use them, that is simple. Most games know what it means or learn what it means veeeery fast. Its like a secret code to differentiate the casual gamers from the more experienced ones.

If you don`t understand it usually it also means its not for you... tho it mostly concerns the harder things where experience and a good player are needed.

It's a form of short hand designed to rapidly inform due to having to survive while disconnecting from your avatar to type. From there it just developed into the gaming language.

    OP ( Original poster )

This is an internet forum & given that there are certain known abbreviations that are used such as but not limited to:

    IMO - In my opinion
    FYI - For your information
AFAIK - As far as I know
    BTW - by the way
    LOL - laugh out loud
    IDK - I don't know
OMG - oh my gosh / god / goodness ( depending on the player )
    PM - private message
    TBH - to be honest
    THX - thanks
    TY - thank you
    VET - Veteran
    YW - You're welcome
    BB - bye bye

As you know this is an MMO and given that people will use the following to further emphasise their goal.

The human brain along with the eyes can make up an entire word if all but the first and last letter are in the correct place.

In a game where there are hundreds (possibly thousands if you have 5 full guilds) of people who can write in chat ( Guilds 1-5. group, whisper, emote, yell, tell /whisper, zone ect.)

Would it be wise to type out:

Good evening everyone I am a Templar healer and I am seeking a group to play with for the daily Gold Pledge, I have 501+CP and I am very competent in my ability to heal. Please contact me via whisper.

    ^ that
    OR
    v this

    Healer LFG Gold 501CP

With the first example half your audience isn't even going to look at it because A - it's too long and they don't care & B the chat has already moved out of their screen because other people are talking.

However if you were practical and used the bottom example I am sure everyone saw it because it was short and they could only miss it if they weren't looking at chat.

Thus MMO's use "a certain lingo" that is universally understood...

    Utility:
    WTB - want to buy
    WTS - want to sell
    WTT - want to trade
LF - looking for ( then add whatever it is )
    LFG - looking for group
    LFM - looking for more
    GLF - group looking for
GLFM - group looking for more

    General purpose / miscellaneous:
    HF - have fun
    GG - good game
    GJ - good job
    WP - well played
    RPG - role playing game
    MMO - massive multiplayer online
MMORPG - massive multiplayer online role playing game
    VR - Veteran Rank
    CP - Champion Point/s
    Noob - noob player
    newb - new player

    To name the obvious ones.

I was opposed to it at first myself but now I have grown use to using these terms myself to speed up the in game texting.

I will still write out 95% of the messages I type in a forum though.

But why do people use so many abbreviations in this game and in other games? Has the skill of spelling became too complicated for so many out there? I'm not saying this to be mean, but most of the time I don't even understand what players are requesting, especially when it comes down asking people for dungeons in the zone.

For me, I try to write out things in a way that makes sense to people other than just saying "LFG", "WTB", "WTS", etc. I can totally understand how you feel as I was the same way coming into this game with no prior experience whatsoever when it came to understanding "MMO lingo", quite honestly. I like to learn languages and do coding, though, so picking up on their meanings wasn't much of a problem for me...but some people in-game get absurd with their acronyms. And...I don't consider myself old at all as I'm in my twenties! :D

That being said, there are times where terms like "LFG" does make sense for me to use. Same thing with "DPS" or "DoT/HoT". To me, it becomes overkill when people start shortening the names of dungeons, though. I'm sorry, but I have no clue what someone is referring to in chat when they say "LFM DPS SC Norm". How am I supposed to know that "SC" means Spindleclutch and not Sorcerer? Instead of that prior example, it would have been more understandable if someone had said: "Looking for group member to do Spindleclutch."

Yes, it is a bit more vague. But by doing this, you increase your pool vastly.

First of all, you're not speaking in code. Secondly, you specify the dungeon you're trying to find a group member for, so people won't get confused thinking you're talking about needing a Sorcerer. Best of all, you don't even need to specify "DPS", meaning you'll get more people reply to you and ask to join, whereas you could then reply to them and ask them politely if they can do a "Damage" role (instead of just saying "DPS").

So I can understand where some people in this thread are coming from that it is a sub-community that just learns to speak this way, but the OP does have a point. Not everyone who plays this game does know (or should need to learn) how to speak "MMO". It's a whole other type of code, and you're really just limiting the number of people that could team up with you if they don't understand what you're saying, really.
