So Race Change is on its way after months of anticipation and doubts about its validity have begun to arise in fear it will generate more P2Wness. So I have made this poll to see what the community looks for in their racial choices and if Race Change will be a boon to the Roleplay community or an apocalypse to the PvP community. Feel free to discuss races in any way you wish while you're at it :p

Ofcourse I picked an orc because it looks cool and I have always liked orsimer. But orc passives are also pretty good in my opnion.
I dont understand person who likes argonian but picks altmer because of passives. Or wait now i get it! It is so important to be better than others in videogame!!

    2) At first I didn't care about passives, but I do now. Looking forward to race changes.

They still look human. 'Tis why I'm making all my magicka users Bretons these days.

Kind of. I pay attention to passives but I choose a race based on how they look mostly. In ESO, I have several Bosmer because, for the first time ever, I can have a pretty Bosmer. I have a male Dunmer because I can't yet have a pretty Dunmer. I had access to all races in all alliances but have tried as much as possible to choose a race for the alliance. I finally made a Breton for DC though it was hard to make one I didn't think looked odd. The eyes are weird. My Bosmer are still magic users even though that isn't their forté because I play games to do magic.

Lalin del Sombra - Bosmer Sorcerer (alchemy/enchanting)

Sanna yos'Phalen - Altmer Sorcerer (provisioning)
    Cosima di Mattina -Altmer Sorcerer

But ofc, if I didn't try to make all of my chars viable, they all would've been Bretons

Sometimes it's for a character idea - a Khajiit Sorcerer that sells suspect potions...Sometimes it's for min/max like my Stamina Redguard DK, sometimes it's just because they look cool like all of my Orcs and my Argonian Nightblade.

It all just depends. Sometimes character concept and min/maxing mix...sometimes they don't. I wanted a Shadowscale Argonian Assassin...sucks their racials are pure ass for a pvp gank build but it's not like it will be useless without the right race. 99% of it is gear, skills, armor sets, etc...

Its both 1 and 4 for me. But, it really comes down to, what Race fills the Role I have in mind. Sometimes, it's what I can make look good. Sometimes it's what can I choose that will make me weaker for more of a challenge. Sometimes, it comes down to, what Race have I not played in this game?

I'm an RPer and a lore geek, so I love picking races that will make for interesting stories... e.g., an Argonian ex-slave-turned-ex-pirate-turned-healer who's trying to make a fresh start in the Covenant, or a delicate Altmer scholar come to the harsh lands of the Pact to study her passion: volcanoes! To me, a character's race informs a big part who they are as a person.

Which is why I have no intention of ever using this feature. But a hearty "Have fun" to those of you who do. :)
I am Queen of Typos. If you don't see "Edited by BlackSparrow" above this line, please assume my account has been taken over by scamps and react accordingly.

    My Girls:
    "Elsweyr, yay or nay?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "If circumstances try to drive me there, maybe. Right now, it just sounds like a lot of sand in my boots."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "The simple thought of it dries my scales. I ventured into Elsweyr long ago, but I may be getting too old to make the journey again."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "This one looks forward to seeing her home sands again. Perhaps she will make her home village many fish sticks!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "I could do much with a good dragon hide."
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "I see little need to muck about some ancient tomb. Too much work to do elsewhere. No, that was not an intentional pun."
Lorelai Magpie, breton thief: "Stealing from the Ban Daar is always a fun challenge. Sometimes, they steal their stuff back!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "While I try to stay at Swum-Many-Waters' side, the whispers of an undead threat worry me."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "Perhaps. The lady Mephala spins many webs, and I can see there being benefit in sending me into the path of an undead invasion."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hear there will be dragons. I would be a disappointment to my Nord heritage if I did not try to slay them."
Madam Argentia, dunmer aristocrat: "I have little desire to waltz across the desert for weeks at a time. It's terrible for the complexion."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'm kinda busy up in Wrothgar, sorry!"
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "The Khajiit usually throw some nice contracts my way. I'm sure Jimila will have something that will take me there."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one is happy to check back on her homeland after grand adventures drew her away! Let the kittens call her -dra instead of -daro now!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "My lady Meridia does detest the undead. I may need to sneak out on my duties on Artaeum to address it."

It depends on the character. I usually have an idea I use as a starting point and then I match everything else to that.

Sometimes that idea is the race, as with my main where I wanted a khajiit and chose a class, appearance and build to suit how I wanted to play a khajiit. Sometimes it follows on from the original idea, like when I wanted to make a character who was primarily a crafter - I made him an Imperial because it would be much more expensive to buy that motif than the other racial ones.

I don't really worry about the racial abilities. I will take them into consideration when I'm trying to decide a build, for example I focused my Breton more on magicka because that fit the racials. But it's highly unlikely it would ever be the deciding factor for me.

Edit: I can't see myself ever using the race change option. I spend a lot of time designing the character in my mind before I make them in the game. By the time I actually make them they're a fully formed person in my mind and the race is an integral part of that. I suppose maybe if it wasn't expensive (which it will be) I might use the race change, appearance change and name change all together if for some reason I wanted to delete a max level character and make a new one around the same time. But most likely that will be prohibitively expensive and I'd rather just level up a new one.

It's honestly hard to tell if I pick Khajiit for the passives or if I pick my builds because they're compatible with Khajiit passives. I was a khajiit in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. I always play a melee. My main is a stam NB and my alt (only serious one anyway) is a stam Sorc.

I pick races based on their lore, but it sucks that my playstyle has to suffer because of this. We really should have the option to pick another race's passives for a small fee.

In TES the choice is easy: always khajiit.
Here I play NB and in Skyrim I played a mix of conjuration magic and weapons.

In other games it depends on how the game works (such as how the faction and class system works)

I just pick whatever after my first (always go Khajiit first) and see how the character I want fits into the average racial narrative. Sometimes it's closer to the stereotypes, sometimes it's very far away, and it's such a joy to tease out the details. Not that there's no part of me that desires an Altmer Proxy-bomb Soul Tether Vicious Death Magicka Nightblade, it just isn't super high on the priory list compared to Who I want to play.

To me, a character's race informs a big part who they are as a person.

I would say my approach is similar (as you can get a small taste of from reading my sig). If I think of an idea for a character, then I create him/her, and sometimes also a brother, or somebody from that person's past/life and so on. Or a relative/whatever to a character run by a friend (usually my spouse).
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis
