Logging out does NOT close the game - even after the new addition to the launcher I still end up in task manager to end the programme.

I have the same issue. Anytime I quit directly from the game, my screen goes black and I have to reboot. Even task manager doesn't shut the game down for me.

I find signing out of windows closes ESO and is quicker than a full reboot even with an SSD when this happens to me :)

Hmm this can't be right. I think the game runs very smoothly, but the log off and quit does not.

Hmmm maybe just ALT-F4 to force close the game at the system level rather than using the ESO "quit"? Might work.

i'm having same issues on mac, sometimes closing full screen before logging out helps. It does not occur all the time

Not an identical issue for me, however in my specific situation, the 64b client frequently crashes upon logout or exit. I often have to force close it as well. It might be a related issue to the one you're having, as they sound fairly similar.

Little off topic - to edit the opening post of a thread to cog wheel icon to click on to get edit is actually to the right of the post title rather than in the actual post box like a normal post :)

Wait... you mean you've been able to exit the 64-bit client WITHOUT it crashing?

Can't speak for him, but I have no issues with it.

That said I did have this problem frequently maybe 1-1 1/2 years ago. Nothing like it since then.

I wonder if it isn't a video driver issue. It's almost like the card doesn't get the memo that the game was shut down and it should go back to the desktop.

I never crash when exiting the 64-bit client. The only crash I get now seems to be related to LUA memory usage, and setting LUA memory to 2GB seems to "fix" that, for now.

I've noticed that it takes quite a long time for me to exit when using the 64 bit client. Other than that the game runs quite smoothly.

Same occurs on iMAC running the client in full screen windowed mode. The only way to close it cleanly is to "logoff" then "back" then "quit"

Before doing this it was occurring maybe 75% of the time.

In previous weeks, the 64 Bit Client just exited. Since the patch last week, it does seem to take a bit for the black screen to go away and give me the desktop. No crashes, just a couple extra seconds to get to the desktop.

I have seen extra instances of ESO in my system tray off an on since the game came out, I never minded them as all seem well.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

My 64bit client gets really wrecked if i press quit without logout. It will go to a black screen and the only way to close it is via cmd.exe, as the black thing covers even the task manager and blocks mouse input.

Same issue here. Exit game -> game executable remains running with a black fullscreen covering the desktop and any windows on it (like task manager). Only the taskbar is visible. Not happening 100% of the time, but often enough to be annoying.

Just be sure to allow the countdown when you 'quit' othewise it will leave your character logged in for awhile which if you have XP Scrolls or food buffs active, it will continue to use up time on those until the server completely disconnects you; now I only 'log-out' and then back out of the game just to be safe. Logging out only takes a few extra seconds versus 'quit' but logging out never causes any crashes... at least not for me.

Usually closes properly about 50% of the time for me, I've started logging out then quitting from the character select screen seems to have more success not freezing up.
This is a feature we do still intend to do, but there are many other things taking priority so we don't yet have an exact update when this will be implemented.
