Let's see what's wrong with Sorcerers after the Dark Brotherhood Patch (and before too).

Hello everyone, I'm Izaki been playing ESO for a while now and I'm had my magicka sorc as a main since day one and I also leveled a stamina sorc as well as the other classes. First impression on the sorc? Pretty cool but its lacking some aspects that would make it more interesting. I couldn't help but notice the fact that every sorcerer out there runs the very similar skill loadouts. So Zeni why don't you listen to the community and their concerns about the class. There is no way you will be able to make the right modifications without the players' feedback. That goes for the other classes as well. All have to have their own unique challenges. For the sorcs its not really a challenge, its more of a chore that takes the pleasure away from the game. I am by no means a pro player, but I do know how to take care of myself in ESO PvP and PvE. The patch for Dark Brotherhood came out today for Xbox and I spent the day on ESO testing out stuff to back up this post, I already knew I would make one as soon as I saw the DB Sorc Q&A discussion by Wrobel (I swear I thought it was a prank at first). So this is not a whine thread at all, I'm not going to tantrum about shield modifications nor am I going to cry about the changes to surge. Lets simply take the time to examine the issues we are having with this class and then back it up with math and logical arguments @Wrobel .
Lets dive right in there and expose all the things this class is lacking.
- lack of utility skills (buffs/debuffs) in particular the ones that can be used in group play
- toggles
- lack of stamina morphs
- an "almost absence" of reliable survival skills such as heals
Other than that, on the positive side, sorcerers have some unique mechanics (think crystal fragments proc, third bar/toggle ulitimate, delayed damage from daedric curse, etc.) among other things.

Now lets back up our arguments and expand our thinking a little bit (feel free to add and contribute)

UTILITY/BUFFS/DEBUFFS
Right now we have :
- spell critical bonus to nearby allies when activating a Dark Magic ability
- Major Brutality and Sorcery with Surge
- Minor and Major Resolve and Ward with Bound Armor and Lightning Form
- max stat bonuses with Bound Armor morphs and pets (through a passive in the Daedric Summoning tree)
- Minor and Major Speed buffs with Boundless Storm and Hurricane respectively
- Negate Magic that can shut down opponents damaging them or healing allies with the morphs
- You also get a 10% magicka recovery buff when you apply Empowered Ward
Don't get me wrong these are great. Notice the complete absence of debuffs even simple ones like Minor or Major Breach/Fracture which do seem to go hand in hand with the stormcaller and magic master themes. All these self buffs seem like a lot at first glance, but when you look at other classes say templar or nightblade you have more interesting and simply more useful buffs/debuffs (Empower, Evasion, Defile, Maim, Protection, Mending, Vitality among others). I'm not saying that sorcs must have every single buff out there but I would suggest at least having a wider variety of buffs and most importantly debuffs that would make the class simply better. There are a lot of overlooked skills that are simply not good enough (think pets) that are barely usable because of the lack of control you have over them and I'll cover some of those later.
I personally assume that the sorcerer class needs more variety and more options when it comes to choosing skills. Part of that could be done through an addition of some utility buffs (again more importantly debuffs) that sorcerers need. Obviously we need to be of some use to group also.

TOGGLES
Sorcs have 3 toggles. Put all of those on the bar, you only have 2 skill slots left for actual play and enjoyment. No class should have that many toggles. If I am correct, after looking through several threads, I may conclude that a vast majority has not been fond of them since the game's launch.
- I believe pets should have a timer instead of hanging there forever. Their special abilities are pretty badass, I have to admit that. So why can't we have them as actual skills ? I mean sorcs are kind of meant to master the arts of the Daedra and what-not. There is so many different possiblilites that would arise from that. If ZOS really intends to keep them pets, at least give them a timer and try to make them a bit less suicidal or do the opposite and make them suicide bombers.
- Now Bound Armor. This thing is a joke. The Minor Resolve and Ward are barely noticeable buffs, although the stat bonuses are sweet. So lets bring in the math to our dear friend Wrobel : a CP160 Breton Magicka Sorcerer with 33674 maximum magicka and 2542 unbuffed spell damage applying Power Surge and casting an un-proc'ed Crystal Fragments at a CP160 Redguard Stamina Sorcerer equipped with full legendary medium armor without any defensive buffs will do 4877 damage on a non-critical strike in the non-CP campaign. With the Bound Armor buff our Redguard Stamina Sorcerer will take 4751 damage from the Breton Magicka Sorcerer with the same buffs as before. Keep in mind that the damage values are affected by Battle Spirit in Cyrodiil. The math is based on the base damage formula given by the Sorcerer Arithmagic post at http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/pts-2-1-2-sorcerer-arithmagic/. Please correct in I am wrong, but the calculated damage was not far from reality from a couple of tests I ran on Xbox One today with my sorcerer (who is in a gear change period which explans the underwhelming stats, he'll get better) and a friend of mine. So basically the base ability is useless, as mitigating around 100 damage is like mitigating a (huge) mosquito bite. It does get interesting when you morph it but a different buff would serve better as well as a active ability upon second activation of the skill. Now I'm not asking for everything without sacrificing anything but a big part of the community would agree with me that 2 skill slots is a huge sacrifice with that much less benefit. I'll demonstrate it right now in fact : our CP160 Breton Magicka Sorcerer has now activated Bound Aegis to benefit from an 8% increase in maximum macgika, which brings it up to 35996. The rest of his buffs stay the same. The Redguard Stamina Sorcerer was yet again caught off guard without Bound Armor. The damage from a non-proc'ed, non-critical strike Crystal Fragments in the non-CP campaign was equal to 5065. So basically an increase off 200 damage which is not overwhelming. Therefore, it is probably not worth to slot this skill in PvP (remember this was all without CP). I do agree that it stacks nicely with other skills (other toggles) and drastically increases the damage in PvE but unfortunately it is a waste of a skill slot in other circumstances. The max magicka also buffs the shield size but I could not evaluate the increase in the value of the damage shield reliably.

STAMINA BASED MORPHS
Hurricane is amazing. Thank you for bringing in such a great and UNIQUE ability. See the emphasis on the word unique? Why not just give us a stamina DPS skill or an ultimate already? If i remember correctly there was only one morph for Crystal Shards. It seemed strange because all the other abilities in the game had two morphs, but not this one. I wanted to report the bug, but apparently it was intentional. *sarcasm off* I read about the fact that you want all classes to play differently and all in Wrobels Q&A Sorcerer thread but its ridiculous. For sure DKs have only DoTs as stamina morphs, but isn't that what DKs specialize in? We cannot go into Cyrodiil or Trials with only Hurricane and expect to kill everything. Giving us one ability that we can't rely on for strong instant damage is a not a constructive approach. I'll admit I was whining there, but you feel my pain @FENGRUSH . Edit : I did change my views on the stam sorc. They are actually pretty decent this patch. I would however like to have a stamina ultimate, maybe the one atronach morph or one of the overload morphs ? To have a few options when it comes to choosing the second ultimate for your back bar (first one is Dawnbreaker Of Smiting => amazing good).

SURVIVAL ABILITIES
As sorcerers we have access to Shields, Surge and Dark Deal.
- First lets talk about shields. 6 or 10 second shields are fine. They never last that long in trials, 4-man boss fights or PvP. I don't have a problem with the current shield duration. Nonetheless, I do have a problem with the fact that Dampen Magicka (Annulment Morph) can potentially be stronger than Hardened Ward. I've been using Empowered Ward since Thieves Guild because 10% more magicka regeneration is just better in my opinion and now I can also use Dampen Magicka with greater effect than Hardened Ward, because even though it costs more, I have more sustainability and I can afford to cast it as soon as it goes down or expires. Hardened Ward used to be a potentially good morph. ZOS would most likely respond with the fact that you have to wear a majority of light armor pieces to make Dampen Magicka stronger than the sorc skill, but who would use shields aside from a magicka build and why would you not wear light armor as a magicka build? I believe that Hardened Ward should become something entirely different to keep it unique for it to earn a place on a sorc's skill bar.
- Surge was great and is still alright now just different. Its not as bad as people make it seem, after some very limited testing I found that it opens up more opportunities for different builds. It would have been nice to give us the choice over which type of heal we prefer, but this change does not bother me. I still use surge on both of my sorcs. Obviously its not reliable as you have to have a perform a critical strike to heal, but I like it this way as it is yet another unique mechanic.
- Dark Exchange is interesting, but mostly in PvE for ressource management. In PvP a interruptable heal thats a second late is not just risky, its stupid. I understand that by making it an instant cast ability it will be a pale copy of Rushed Ceremony, so obviously there has to be something defining about Dark Exchange. What's even worse is comparing this survival skill to Radiant Oppression and Dark Flare which are damaging abilities (that kill anything that moves). I understand that you "want it to feel awesome to pull off this move in the heat of combat", but reality is harsh... If you need a heal, means you're in trouble, which in turn implies the fact that if you take 1 second cast the spell, you'll probably be healing a dead body. I've done very limited testing today (hard to find a mountain that doesn't quite kill you when you jump off) and with around 21.5k health in Cyrodiil you need to cast this ability 4 times to get to full health. Thats 4 seconds. Thats you dead right there. I still don't know if Dark Exchange is affected by CPs and if it scales off the stat you use to cast it but it seems to me like it does not (it sure is affected by Battle Spirit). So the bottom line is : this skill has some great potential to open up more possibilities for th sorcerer class. Edit : after some more testing especially on the stamina morph, I have to say that this skill is actually pretty good. Its dangerous to use but it works great. Maybe reducing the channel duration to like 0.5 seconds would make this skill a must have on the bar for me personnaly !

In conclusion, I hope that everyone can agree with me on the fact that sorcerers before and after Dark Brotherhood have not underdone the much needed change and that same problems still persist, particulary the diversity problem. There we go, I've exposed what I think is is preventing the class from being interesting. I have tried to not make any suggestions on possible skill changes or anything because I am not part of the ZOS team nor do I represent the whole ESO community. I've simply done my best to expose the problems, but it is not humanly possible to have one man come up with solutions that please everyone and without making the class overpowered in comparison to others. This is where your guys suggestions are welcome. Maybe we could ZOS to offer us some possible modifications and then we, the ESO community, would decide/vote on which ones we are most happy with. This goes for all the classes, not just the sorcerer. I strongly believe it would bring the devs and the players closer together, which in turn would make this game an even better experience than it already is. It is important to not forget the fact that ZOS can't simply do everything that everyone wishes for as it would probably become some yet undiscovered form of horror. Gotta find a compromise => communication !

Izaki out.

Edit : added in some of my views after some further play and testing.

    I agree with you OP
my biggest problem so far with this patch is having to rely on destro staves for a spammable is horrible I would trade the Daedric Summoning line just to get Trapping Webs back (and maybe get Streak penalty reduced) I fixed my build up all nice but this alone might make me reroll.

To be honest, I'm fine with pets being toggles. Because this makes a pet build hard to play and basically unaccessable for unskilled Sorcerers. Because they loost too many skilllots. I like it this way, pets should remain something that only few people really do.

But right now, they aren't worthy toggles. A toggle takes at least 2 slots, or even 3 in Sorcs case. And a pet does not make up for loosing 2 or even 3 slots.... so they should receive major fixes insead.

Bound armor / bound armaments / bound aegis should be reworked into a bound weapons ability, similar to grim focus for nightblades.

Grim Focus (and morphs): Empower yourself to gain minor berserk (+8% damage). While active, using 4 light or heavy attacks changes this ability to fire a spectral bow at your target.

So change bound armor to something like that.

    Bound Armor
Imbue your armor with daedric energy, granting minor resolve and minor ward. While active, executing 4 light or heavy weapon attacks changes this ability to Bound Weapon. Activating bound weapon conjures a sword from oblivion to strike at your target, dealing magic damage.

    Morph 1: Bound Battleaxe
    -Changes cost to stamina
-While slotted, increases maximum stamina by 5%
After 4 light/heavy attacks, activate again to conjure a daedric battleaxe, attacking all enemies in a circle around you with one sweeping strike dealing physical damage and causing them to bleed for damage over time.

    Morph 2: Bound Bow
-While slotted, increases maximum magicka by 5%
After 4 light/heavy attacks, activate again to conjure a daedric bow, firing a magical arrow at the target to deal heavy magicka damage and knock the target back.

There, now we have an interesting alternative, and one already proven to be useful by nightblades with grim resolve.

This is ultimately the same skill as a Nightblade and really offering only DPS functionality.

    Bound Aegis

After activation, while taking damage each attack generates a daderic electrical charge, after "X" number of charges the energy can be expelled in a lightening PBAOE causing lightening damage and stunning enemies in the explosion for 2.5 seconds.

The skill expires in a relatively short window and consumes magica to use.

No re-activation of Bound Aegis required.

This makes an interesting tank skill, PVP skill, and the utility of a group stun.

    Bound Armaments

Same concept except the charge is physical damage.

Place an internal cool down on how often it procs.

    If you were inclined to get exceptionally crazy and think outside the box dangerous;

With Bound Ageis/Bound Armaments slotted and active and Bounless Storm/Hurricane active after "X" charges the player receives a 2 second window to self synergies the two skills causing........

    Take your pick

    A better/longer boundless storm/hurricane.

Major berserk for player and three others for eight seconds.

    Damage mitigation in the storm/hurricane

    Major savagery

    Minor force

    Major force

    Storm life drain

Better chance to proc disentigate / implosion

You could actually do just about anything within reson and tuned to balance.

PVP sorcs are still ok and a good player will still do well, it's the PVE aspect of the game where we are struggling pigeon holed into one build and to be competitive you can't stray from it.

You say frag proc is good but I have done boss fights where it hasn't procced once , on my mage blade merciless resolve which give me a damage boost is guaranteed to proc after 4 heavy / light attacks and dose the same some times more damage.

Surge is now a flat value heal a steady trickle shall we say again my mage blade heals me and another and also dose damage,I have found out the hard way sorcs bring no utility to a group and are usually only wanted for one ability which is still bugged.

I loved to play my sorc but anything it can do can be done better by any other class, and now they all get a shield as good as a sorcs.

Shame is they lack identity are tied to toggles and a certain build to do good .

I think they should shy away from the proc its interesting but ive done fights where it never procs and others have to. they could turn it into a instant cast with every third cast could make its ignore X% of spell/physical resistant's (becomes filler)
morph 1 makes it stam and becomes shattering shards and does a cone of physical damage (does less damage to the none targeted target)

Pets either need to get real good or they need to go in my opinion. They don't die in one hit now, they die in 3 hits if you shield them up, they are easily avoidable and i just don't think they have their place on a bar apart from solo leveling for self heals. I would be fine with using them but only if you had full control over them which is probably impossible. But the explosive familiar ability is pretty cool if I recall, same with the twilight heal. The atro is an alright ultimate, but its easy to avoid unless you use rune prison on the guy and he's out of stam in PvP (won't happen with all the stam builds running around) or in PvE where Overload is putting out better DPS. I understand some of you guys like them but they aren't performing well enough. I think one pet is more than enough. Maybe make morph options with one ranged and one close combat... I don't know.

I don't think that PvP sorcs are okay. I mean I kill people with my sorc but man... You just can't surprise anyone anymore. The problem is every sorc has the exact same skill bar load out. I have tried thinking outside the box and tried making niche abilities work (dark exchange lol), hell I've even tried using pets in PvP. There just no way to be different I guess when you're playing a sorc and I found that disappointing.

Well in boss fight you just place down your Liquid Lightning, and then spam Overload right?.. You can't proc frags unless you spam Force Pulse (and your shields now that they are on your front bar  )
I personally like the fact that there are these little luck mechanics in the sorc class, like Surge that only heals you on crits Frags that proc... Its unique to the class and its something I find kinda precious you know

No no thats like the opposite of what I was thinking... I think we need something unique, not a pale copy of the NB skill. I would love to see the Minor Resolve and Ward dropped for a more useful buff and some kind of active ability that doesn't DPS. Replacing one of the pets with Bound Weapons though could be cool though ! (SKYRIM brother)

I don't think us sorcs we need a spammable, but I do think we need different damage options..! I find the Mages Fury morphs to be quite underwhelming though... maybe change something to one of them to make it more exciting..?

Oh yeah by the way ! Rune Cage : this thing is really cool. except the morphs are pretty crap. I think the disorient should never be broked by DoTs or Channels, and have one morph actually apply a growing DoT effect and the other be cast on self and when an enemy gets trapped the ability would steal life from him until he CC breaks or something?

What do you guys think of the Buffs and Debuffs we should get? <= THIS

You just answered your own question about what is wrong with sorcs, to do any good they are all tied to the same build.

Liquid lightening is only good in a static fight and we are still overload bots when it dosn't bug out and you get stuck in heavy attack, not much use, otherwise they produce mediocre damage

Sorcs don't buff add damage or heal there team mates unless they have a pet out which will die in the blink of an eye.

It's a one trick pony class that dosn't excel at anything any more, every update they seem to take away more of the class identity and thats a shame.

PvE is a static playstyle, you can kite mobs wherever you want them to go ! Lightning Flood is good in PvE IMO.

I just tested Surge out a bit more on my stam sorc and its actually pretty good ! shame sorcs don't have any class DoTs they can apply to actually be able to heal themselves along with Hurricane... It seems to me like its a skill thats way more suited for DKs than sorcs..!

If you are talking about what I said, I said the exact opposite ! PvP sorcs can survive and kill though, its not that bad, like I said in the OP, shields never last for 20 seconds anyway ! The only problem with the PvP sorc is the fact that everyone uses the same build because there are just not enough viable options. 2/3 of sorc abilities get overlooked, especially the half of the Daedric Summoning Tree because half those abilities are toggles. Stupid pets... And stupid bound armor.
Bottom line is sorcs need more choices when it comes to skill choices, so we need more utility skills and maybe 1 more actual damaging ability. Dark Exchange needs to give up or reduce the cast time too.

    I agree with you OP
my biggest problem so far with this patch is having to rely on destro staves for a spammable is horrible I would trade the Daedric Summoning line just to get Trapping Webs back (and maybe get Streak penalty reduced) I fixed my build up all nice but this alone might make me reroll.

uh have you looked at many magicka builds? magicka nightblade are using that same destro staff spammable .

Yeah but the spammable isn't the problem is it ? I mean people spam snipe and dizzying swing which come from weapon skill lines too. Yeah its a crap example cause force pulse is REALLY bad but i'd prefer them to tweak classes before tweaking skill lines. And no nerfing, just bringing up

And also NBs have a crap ton of abilities, they don't even have to spam ! They rely on burst just like sorcs do, exept they don't need to get frags to proc while bursting

I'm sick of the pointless changes. Shield nerf was uncalled for and there should be more complaints on this decision. Sorcerers are just not fun anymore. Why play a magicka sorcerer when magicka dks are basically the same and way better.

Whats the point of having 20 second shields if they never last that long anyway though ?

Everyone is complaining about sorcs because they don't know how to play one without Julianos/MKena. I was doing Vet Dailies, three-manning vWGT, and Trials, and I was the one who died the least. If you know how to play one, and fix skills around, then they are still deadly. Especially now in PvP you have access to over 30k in shields. Just focus on Recovery and your constant shield stacking will be fine.

No one runs Julianos/Kena in PvP ! Its suicide given the spell cost increase in DB ! Sorcs don't have problems when they aren't taking damage man, its when they are down to 10% that they have to use Healing Ward or get healed other wise its a matter of time before they die, now that surge is different and that we don't have a single DoT ability nor does Destro skill line.
I never claimed sorcs weren't deadly bro, I said we could use a few changes to give sorcs a bit more VARIETY.
Biggest concern is still the absence of utility to yourself and your group. And the useless toggles (see OP) along with the pets being REALLY underwhelming and almost useless. And THE stam morph is kinda lacking too...
